“Underrated” is a judgment, not a sales statistic. These twelve PS5 picks were chosen because each has a distinctive design, a clear audience fit, and a reason it can be missed when blockbuster releases dominate the conversation. The list is not a definitive ranking, and the available sources do not establish a reliable measure of sales, awareness, player counts, or review performance.
Platform labels and catalog listings can change by territory. PlayStation’s current PS5 catalog and Indies catalog are the best places to confirm whether a title is currently offered in your region. The candidate descriptions below draw primarily on PlayStation’s June 5, 2024 indie roundup.

How to use this list
Start with the player profile rather than the number beside a game. Some entries are quiet narrative experiences; others demand repeated attempts, precise movement, or methodical exploration. A PS5 label may mean a native PS5 release, a PS5 and PS4 release, or a catalog listing that differs by territory. Check the store page before buying, especially if you want a disc edition or a particular language version.

1. Pacific Drive makes the car your most important companion
PlayStation Blog lists Pacific Drive as a PS5 game from Ironwood Studios and publisher Kepler Interactive. Its central idea is a survival journey through a strange wilderness in a station wagon. The vehicle is not a menu screen or a disposable fast-travel tool: it is the object you maintain while deciding whether to risk one more trip into dangerous territory.
#1 Best Overall
- BECOME A FEARSOME PIRATE- Strike fear in your foes as you board and sink enemy vessels as Edward Kenway, captain of the Jackdaw. Whether blending into crowds or leading daring assaults, switch between silent takedowns and fierce brawls as you effortlessly wield swords, pistols, and the Hidden Blade. With a cast of historical pirate legends at your side, defy empires amidst the age-old conflict opposing Assassins and Templars.
- A CLASSIC REBUILT FOR AN ENHANCED EXPERIENCE- Combat has been rebuilt for more dynamic encounters, emphasizing parries and takedowns, while stealth and parkour have been improved for smoother escapes and assassinations. Continuously upgrade the Jackdaw to face powerful enemy ships with enhanced naval mechanics featuring new alternate fire modes. Quality-of-life additions also address previous pain points, ensuring your experience is improved.
- THE CARIBBEAN LIKE NEVER BEFORE- Whether you’re sailing the open seas or journeying across untamed lands, discover a seamless open world built with the latest Anvil engine. Take in sweeping vistas as you brave stormy waters, dive into underwater shipwrecks, or push through dense tropical jungles. Enhanced by features such as Dolby Atmos and ray tracing, every scene feels more immersive, bringing the world’s beauty to life.
- EXPANDING EDWARD’S ADVENTURE- Building on top of the original story, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced introduces exclusive new content. Familiar faces will return, with new storylines dedicated to fan-favorite characters such as Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. Unexpected allies will also cross your path, as three officers join you on your journey as part of the main narrative. More surprises await, such as new sea shanties, pets, a photo mode, and more.
This is a strong choice if you prefer atmosphere, preparation and improvisation to traditional shooting galleries. The premise creates tension without requiring a military power fantasy. You plan an outing, gather what you can, and weigh the safety of returning against the temptation to push farther. Players looking for a compact arcade loop may find the pace too deliberate; players who enjoy systems, weathered machinery and uneasy road travel get a premise few big-budget games attempt.
2. Balatro turns poker hands into a roguelike laboratory
The PlayStation Blog’s roundup identifies Balatro on PS5 and PS4, while PlayStation’s Indies catalog also lists it. Developer LocalThunk and publisher Playstack build the run around poker-inspired hands, a customizable deck and Jokers that radically alter scoring rules.
You do not need to be a poker expert to understand the appeal. The game teaches a small vocabulary of hands, then lets modifiers, upgrades and risk decisions transform familiar combinations into unusual engines. Runs are short enough to invite “one more attempt,” but the strategic depth comes from recognizing when a promising build is actually fragile. Balatro suits players who want turn-based thinking, flexible difficulty through experimentation and a game that works in brief sessions. It is a poor fit if you want a character-driven campaign or real-time action.

PlayStation’s official descriptions present Animal Well as a dark, secret-rich exploration game. Its Indies catalog describes a nonlinear, interconnected world containing more than 250 rooms and no combat. That combination immediately distinguishes it from action-heavy exploration games.
Your progress comes from understanding spaces, tools and environmental clues rather than defeating enemies. The world is designed for players who enjoy noticing a suspicious gap, testing an object, and returning later with new knowledge. Some discoveries are obvious; others are layered for people who want to keep investigating after reaching an apparent ending. Choose Animal Well if mapping, observation and experimentation sound better than constant fighting. Avoid it if you need explicit quest markers or a straightforward story path.
4. Crow Country channels classic survival horror through an amusement park
PlayStation Blog lists Crow Country for PS5 and PS4, and the Indies catalog describes its abandoned-amusement-park survival-horror and puzzle premise. The setting gives familiar horror ingredients a specific shape: attractions, service corridors and cheerful signage become clues to a vanished operation.

- Build your ultimate fantasy team with a new Red Diamond rarity tier and World Baseball Classic player cards featuring elite game-changing players

The appeal is investigation under pressure. You search rooms, interpret environmental details and solve puzzles while the park’s isolation keeps every detour uneasy. It fits players who enjoy classic survival-horror structure, readable spaces and a mystery that unfolds through exploration rather than cinematic spectacle. If you dislike backtracking, limited resources or deliberately old-school tension, this is one to approach cautiously. Its PS4 availability also makes it a useful pick for households that have not moved every player to PS5 yet.
5. Another Crab’s Treasure makes a difficult genre approachable without removing its personality
PlayStation Blog describes Another Crab’s Treasure as a colorful undersea action-adventure in which found trash serves as equipment. Developer and publisher Aggro Crab use that premise to turn discarded objects into both visual comedy and practical survival tools.
The hook is easy to explain, but the audience fit is broader than the joke suggests. Action-adventure players get readable encounters and a clear reason to experiment with different shells or improvised protection, while newcomers may appreciate a brighter setting than the genre’s usual grim fantasy. The game still asks you to learn enemy patterns and manage danger; the cheerful art direction does not make every fight effortless. Pick it when you want demanding combat with a playful tone and a setting that treats ocean pollution as part of its world rather than background decoration.
6. Ultros combines metroidvania combat with gardening and a time loop
The PlayStation Blog lists Ultros on PS5 and PS4, from developer Hadoque and publisher Kepler Interactive. Its description combines combat, exploration, gardening and a time-loop premise—an unusual set of systems for one side-scrolling adventure.
That mixture is the reason to try it. Progress is not only about opening the next route; you also learn how the ecosystem works and how actions in one cycle affect later attempts. Gardening gives exploration a deliberate, almost caretaking rhythm that contrasts with fast combat. Ultros is aimed at players who like learning a world’s rules over several loops and who welcome visual and mechanical experimentation. It may frustrate anyone seeking a linear campaign with one permanent, easily understood upgrade path.

PlayStation Blog lists Penny’s Big Breakaway as a PS5 3D action platformer from Evening Star and publisher Private Division. Its defining tool is a living yo-yo, and its stages are built with speedrunning-focused movement in mind.

- EARN THE NUMBER - Discover a new James Bond origin story, and the events that led a young maverick to become the best MI6 agent.
- A THRILLING ESPIONAGE ADVENTURE - Embark on missions in breathtaking locations, drive iconic vehicles, and dive into a cinematic adventure in pursuit of a rogue agent who’s always one step ahead.
- SPYING, YOUR WAY - Go silent or go loud. Whether fighting with fists or firepower, using gadgets to infiltrate, or bluffing your way past guards, the approach is entirely up to you.
The important distinction is that the yo-yo is not merely a themed weapon. It shapes how you move, attack and maintain momentum, so a familiar platforming space can become a route-planning puzzle. Beginners can enjoy reaching the end of a stage, while repeat players can refine lines, recover from mistakes and chase faster runs. This is a good match for anyone who values responsive movement and replayable levels over a large open world. Players who want a heavily scripted story or slow exploration should choose another entry here.
8. Tales of Kenzera: Zau links grief, movement and mask-based abilities
PlayStation Blog lists Tales of Kenzera: Zau for PS5. The story-led action game centers on Sun and Moon masks, each providing different navigation and combat abilities. That duality gives the adventure a clear structure: progress depends on learning when to switch approaches rather than relying on one universal move set.
Choose Zau if you want a focused campaign where traversal and combat reinforce the story’s emotional stakes. The mask design also gives the game a useful rhythm for players who enjoy unlocking a new ability, revisiting earlier spaces and discovering routes that were previously impossible. It is less suitable for someone seeking a huge sandbox or a purely systems-driven challenge. The emphasis is on authored adventure, readable abilities and a journey that expects you to follow its narrative arc.

The PlayStation Blog lists Harold Halibut on PS5 and PS4 from developer and publisher Slow Bros. It is a narrative game set aboard a stranded space-colony ship, presented with a stop-motion style.
The visual approach is the immediate reason to notice it, but the setting supplies the deeper appeal: a community living in a ship that was meant to be temporary, now forced to treat it as home. This is for players who enjoy dialogue, character observation and unusual production design more than combat mastery. Expect a patient pace and an experience structured around conversations and discovery. If you need frequent mechanical challenge, Harold Halibut will feel too quiet; if you want a game that looks and sounds unlike standard digital animation, it deserves a place on your shortlist.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure appeared in an older PlayStation Universe hidden-gems list, which is editorial evidence rather than proof of current popularity or under-recognition. Its place here is practical: it offers approachable 3D platforming for players who want something welcoming after a run of intense action games.

11. Demon’s Souls shows why a remake can still feel like a discovery
Demon’s Souls was another example in the older PlayStation Universe hidden-gems article. That source should not be read as a current popularity measurement, but the game remains a useful PS5 recommendation for players who want deliberate, high-stakes action.
Its appeal lies in commitment: attacks, healing and movement have consequences, so progress comes from learning enemy behavior and treating each new area as a problem to solve. The remake’s fantasy setting provides the spectacle, while the underlying structure rewards patience and observation. It suits experienced action players and newcomers willing to accept failure as part of the learning loop. It is not the right choice for casual drop-in play or anyone who wants an adjustable, low-pressure difficulty curve.
12. Tunic is for players who want to decode the game itself
Tunic is a compact isometric adventure built around exploration, combat and the gradual reconstruction of an in-world instruction manual. Its fox hero and bright presentation can suggest a simple action game, but the central pleasure is interpreting diagrams, symbols and environmental hints.
This makes Tunic a strong fit for players who enjoy being trusted to notice connections. The manual’s missing pages turn progress into a knowledge puzzle: you are not only finding a new route, you are learning what the game’s language means. Combat remains important, yet curiosity is the real engine. Pick it if you like secrets, maps and elegant riddles; skip it if you prefer explicit objectives and a story that explains every rule immediately. Confirm the current PS5 listing and edition in your region before buying.

Before you buy
- Open the PlayStation store listing for your country and confirm that the title is available on PS5.
- Check whether the listing is PS5-only or includes a PS4 version; the distinction matters if you share a library across consoles.
- Verify the exact edition, language options and whether a physical copy exists. A catalog listing does not prove disc stock or a current retailer price.
- Match the game’s pace and challenge to your habits. A hidden gem is only useful if its structure suits the time and attention you want to give it.
