A 120Hz display can refresh its image up to 120 times per second. A game running at 120FPS is rendering approximately 120 new frames per second. You need both a capable display and hardware that can produce those frames to get the full benefit.
Put simply: Hz is how often the screen can update; FPS is how often the game creates an image.

What does 120Hz mean?
Refresh rate is the maximum number of times a display can update its image each second. At 120Hz, one refresh interval lasts approximately 8.33 milliseconds, calculated as 1 ÷ 120.
A higher refresh rate can make camera movement, scrolling and cursor motion appear smoother, while potentially reducing the time the display waits for its next refresh. The real result also depends on the source frame rate, panel response time, synchronization settings and end-to-end latency. Microsoft explains the relationship between refresh rate, hardware and resolution in its Windows display-refresh guidance.

What does 120FPS mean?
Frame rate is determined by the game or application producing the image. A game running at 120FPS renders approximately 120 frames per second, with an average frame-generation interval of about 8.33ms.
Game FPS depends on the GPU, CPU, game engine, resolution, ray tracing and other graphics settings, drivers, thermal conditions, background processes and any in-game frame cap. Some games also need a dedicated 120FPS or performance mode. A 120Hz monitor cannot make an underpowered system render at 120FPS.
120Hz versus 120FPS in real examples
| Game output | Display refresh | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 60FPS | 120Hz | Each frame can be shown for two refreshes. The display is not creating 120 unique frames. |
| 90FPS | 120Hz fixed | The timing does not divide evenly. Without suitable synchronization, tearing or uneven delivery can occur. |
| 120FPS | 120Hz | Best-case matching: one new frame can arrive for each refresh. |
| 120FPS | 60Hz | The 60Hz display cannot show 120 separate full refreshes per second. |
| 30FPS | 120Hz | Each frame can be repeated for four refreshes. Motion still looks like 30FPS. |
120Hz with 60FPS
At a fixed 120Hz, a 60FPS source can follow a simple two-refresh pattern: frame A, frame A, frame B, frame B. This may look cleaner or feel more responsive than using a 60Hz display for some tasks, but repeating a frame does not add intermediate motion detail. The game is still producing only 60 unique frames per second.
120Hz with 90FPS
At 90FPS, a new frame arrives every 11.11ms while a 120Hz display refreshes every 8.33ms. Because those intervals do not align evenly, a fixed-refresh setup can show tearing or uneven frame delivery. V-Sync can coordinate presentation but may add latency or cause uneven pacing when the game cannot maintain the display’s refresh rate.
120FPS with a 60Hz display
The game may still render frames more frequently, which can affect latency in some configurations, but a 60Hz panel cannot present 120 complete refreshes per second. Frames may be discarded, torn or delivered unevenly depending on synchronization. Rendering at 120FPS is therefore not the same as visibly receiving 120 distinct screen updates.

Why 120Hz does not guarantee 120FPS
A monitor’s refresh rate is a display ceiling, not a performance guarantee. The same 120Hz screen may receive 45FPS when the GPU is overloaded, 60FPS because of a game cap, 90FPS at a demanding resolution, or 120FPS after reducing visual settings. It may also receive more than 120FPS while remaining limited to 120 visible refreshes.
Windows refresh-rate choices depend on the selected resolution, display, connection and hardware. Some modes are unavailable at particular resolutions, so verify the actual mode rather than relying on the monitor’s headline specification.
Frame pacing matters as much as the FPS number
An FPS counter is not a complete description of motion quality. Evenly spaced 120FPS frames arrive about every 8.33ms and can look smooth. A nominal 120FPS result with large frame-time spikes can stutter. A stable 90FPS experience may feel better than one that repeatedly jumps between 80 and 120FPS.
When motion looks poor despite a high FPS counter, check frame-time graphs, CPU or shader-compilation stalls, game-engine stutter, display response-time overshoot, motion-blur settings, VRR status and synchronization behavior.
How VRR connects refresh rate and FPS
Variable refresh rate technologies—including AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible, VESA Adaptive-Sync and HDMI VRR—allow a compatible display to change its refresh timing to better follow incoming frames. If a game fluctuates between supported frame rates, the panel does not have to refresh on a rigid schedule.

VRR can reduce or eliminate tearing within its supported range, but it does not make the GPU faster or increase FPS. Before relying on it, check:
Recommended Free Tools
- the monitor’s actual VRR range, such as 48–120Hz;
- whether VRR works over HDMI, DisplayPort or both;
- whether the GPU, console and game support the relevant implementation;
- whether the advertised maximum applies at your chosen resolution;
- whether HDR, 10-bit colour or another output mode changes the available maximum.
AMD describes FreeSync synchronization and supported low-frame-rate behavior in its FreeSync documentation and support FAQ.
Low-framerate compensation
If the source falls below a display’s minimum VRR frequency, some implementations use low-framerate compensation (LFC). For example, AMD describes a 40FPS game on a 60–144Hz display being repeated to run the panel at 80Hz. That keeps timing within the VRR range, but it does not turn 40 unique frames into 80 unique frames. LFC behavior depends on the display and its implementation.
V-Sync, uncapped FPS and frame caps
V-Sync
V-Sync coordinates frame presentation with fixed refresh cycles and can reduce tearing. Its trade-offs may include additional latency or uneven delivery when the game cannot sustain the display’s refresh rate.
Uncapped FPS
Uncapped rendering can make a newer frame available sooner, but on a fixed-refresh display it can also produce tearing. More FPS is not automatically better if the display cannot present it cleanly or frame pacing is inconsistent.

Frame caps
A cap can improve consistency and reduce unnecessary GPU load. With VRR, many players cap slightly below the display’s maximum VRR refresh rate to avoid repeatedly hitting the upper limit, but the best setting depends on the game, driver, synchronization mode and latency target. There is no universal cap that applies to every setup.
Why a 120Hz monitor may only offer 60Hz
The monitor, GPU and game may all support 120Hz, yet the connection path can still limit the active mode. Check the following:
- the HDMI or DisplayPort version and the monitor’s input-specific limits;
- the cable, adapter, dock, KVM switch or USB-C implementation;
- the selected resolution, HDR mode, colour depth and chroma format;
- whether DSC is required and supported;
- whether the monitor’s high-refresh option is enabled in its on-screen menu;
- whether the graphics driver is installed correctly.
Do not assume HDMI 2.1 is universally required. The necessary connection depends on resolution, refresh rate, colour mode, compression and device implementation. NVIDIA explains how Display Stream Compression can affect high-resolution, high-refresh modes.

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can automatically adjust refresh behavior on supported laptops and displays. Microsoft says DRR requires VRR support and a display refresh rate of at least 120Hz. DRR is separate from a game’s FPS setting, and on some systems it can limit a game’s maximum refresh rate. If a game appears stuck at a lower refresh rate, disabling DRR is a reasonable troubleshooting step.

Movies and streaming video
A 120Hz panel can be useful even when the source is not 120FPS because common video rates divide evenly into 120:
- 24FPS content can use a 5:5 cadence;
- 30FPS content can use a 4:4 cadence;
- 60FPS content can use a 2:2 cadence.
This does not convert the video to 120FPS or improve its bitrate, HDR, compression or resolution. It can provide more even frame repetition than a refresh rate that does not divide cleanly into the source rate. Microsoft also documents adaptive refresh behavior for supported 24FPS playback in its Windows display guidance.
Is 120Hz worth it if you cannot reach 120FPS?
Competitive PC games
Prioritize sustained FPS, consistent frame times, low input latency, a useful VRR range and a connection that supports the target resolution and refresh rate. A 240Hz display is a poor value if the system normally produces only 70–100FPS unless you expect a hardware upgrade or specifically value latency headroom.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

120Hz can improve camera motion and responsiveness, but VRR, resolution, HDR, contrast and panel response may matter more than achieving a locked 120FPS.
Laptops
Confirm that the internal panel is actually set to 120Hz. Battery-saving modes, Windows DRR, thermal limits and the laptop GPU can all reduce performance. For an external monitor, verify the USB-C, HDMI, DisplayPort or dock limitation separately.
Consoles
Check the specific console, game mode, resolution, HDMI input, cable and game support. A 120Hz television or monitor does not mean every console game runs at 120FPS; many titles offer separate quality and performance modes.
General use and video
For desktop work and streaming, consider panel quality, HDR, contrast, viewing distance and cadence handling alongside refresh rate. A 120Hz badge alone does not guarantee a better image.
Buying checklist
- Confirm the exact resolution at the desired refresh rate.
- Check the display’s real VRR range and whether LFC is supported.
- Verify which HDMI or DisplayPort input supports the advertised mode.
- Check the cable, dock, adapter or KVM rather than assuming it can pass 120Hz.
- Compare response-time behavior and input latency, not only the refresh-rate number.
- Estimate the FPS your CPU and GPU can sustain in the games you actually play.
- For 1440p or 4K at 120Hz, verify bandwidth, HDR, colour depth and whether DSC is needed.
A high-refresh monitor provides headroom. It does not render frames, upgrade a console game mode or turn 60FPS into 120FPS.
