This curated list covers both remasters and selected remakes, chosen for the scale and quality of their updates, how much of the original experience they preserve, the content included, and access on current platforms. It is not a definitive ranking: the best remaster for you depends on whether you want a story-driven trilogy, a strategy classic, or an adventure you can revisit on modern hardware.
Platform availability can vary by edition and region, so check the linked publisher or platform page before buying. In particular, the cited Nintendo collection page is for Canada, and Blizzard’s platform details come from a 2021 launch guide.
What counts as a remaster?
A remaster updates an existing game—often its visuals, audio, interface, or compatibility—while keeping its basic design recognizable. A remake rebuilds more of the game, potentially changing presentation and systems. Collections can bundle several original games and expansions, whether or not every component has received the same kind of update.
This distinction matters for two notable modern revisits: PlayStation describes The Last of Us Part I as a ground-up remake, not a remaster or PS5 port, and Square Enix presents FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE as a remake edition. They fit a broader list of modernized classics, but should not be labeled strict remasters.

Best remastered classic games to consider
1. Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a strong choice if you want a long, story-led science-fiction RPG experience in one package. EA says it includes the single-player base content of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, plus more than 40 DLC items, remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD. That makes it the broadest trilogy-scale recommendation here, rather than a single-game visual refresh. See EA’s Mass Effect Legendary Edition details.
2. Diablo II: Resurrected
For an action RPG that keeps its classic structure while modernizing presentation, Diablo II: Resurrected offers rebuilt 3D graphics, remastered audio, new cinematics, quality-of-life changes, and cross-progression, according to Blizzard. Blizzard’s 2021 launch guide lists Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. Because that platform information is dated, confirm current edition and regional availability before purchase. Check Blizzard’s launch guide.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)

3. Command & Conquer Remastered Collection
This is the PC strategy pick for players who want the original Command & Conquer and Red Alert in one collection. EA says the package also includes all three expansion packs, rebuilt multiplayer, a modernized UI, a map editor, a bonus gallery, and more than seven hours of remastered music. EA’s purchase page lists PC storefronts, so this should be treated as a PC recommendation rather than a console release. View EA’s collection page.
4. Tomb Raider I–III Remastered
The collection brings together Lara Croft’s first three adventures, along with their expansions and secret levels, according to Nintendo’s Canada page. It suits players who want the original explorations and puzzle-focused adventures in a modern-platform collection rather than a reimagined story. The cited page is regional; check the local store listing for platform and edition details where you live. See Nintendo Canada’s listing.
Rank #3
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
5. Metroid Prime Remastered
Metroid Prime Remastered updates the first-person adventure originally released on GameCube. Nintendo calls it an HD remaster and names Nintendo Switch as its platform. It is a clear pick for players after a single, focused classic rather than a multi-game bundle; the cited announcement does not establish a PC edition. Read Nintendo’s announcement.
6. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition appears among the recommendations in TechRadar’s guide to remastered PC games. That guide is secondary coverage and cautions that not every game it discusses is technically a remaster. This makes the title worth considering as a modern PC entry point to a classic strategy game, but verify its current platform and edition details on the relevant official product listing before relying on a particular feature or release label. See TechRadar’s PC remasters guide.

- What's Included: Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition; DualSense; USB cable, HDMI cable.
7. Halo: The Master Chief Collection
TechRadar’s remastered PC games guide also discusses Halo: The Master Chief Collection. It is a collection rather than a single-game remaster, and the guide notes that some of its examples do not fit the strict technical definition of a remaster. Consider it if you want a way into several classic Halo campaigns, but check the official listing for the current platform, included content, and edition specifics. See TechRadar’s PC remasters guide.

- For a complete narrative arc: Mass Effect Legendary Edition groups three single-player base games and more than 40 DLC items.
- For a classic strategy package: Command & Conquer Remastered Collection combines two base games with three expansions and a suite of extras.
- For familiar gameplay with modernized presentation: Diablo II: Resurrected lists rebuilt visuals and audio alongside quality-of-life updates.
- For a single console adventure: Nintendo identifies Metroid Prime Remastered as a Switch HD remaster.
- For a set of early adventures: Tomb Raider I–III Remastered bundles three original games and their expansions, according to Nintendo Canada.
- If strict terminology matters: distinguish remasters from remakes and compilations; a collection may contain several games without making each one a remaster.
Check platform and edition before buying
“Modern platforms” does not mean every game is available on every current console or on PC. The cited pages explicitly identify Nintendo Switch for Metroid Prime Remastered and PC storefronts for Command & Conquer Remastered Collection; Blizzard’s cross-platform list is from its 2021 launch guide. For regional releases, editions, and current storefront availability, use the linked publisher or platform listing for your country.
