If FAR: Changing Tides crashes when you launch it, start with the fix for your platform: on Windows, check the game files, drivers, Windows updates and overlays; on PlayStation or Xbox, try Frontier’s platform-specific cache procedure. None of these steps is guaranteed to solve every crash. The guidance below follows Frontier Support’s troubleshooting articles dated February 19, 2026, and keeps PC, PlayStation and Xbox steps separate.

First, identify your platform

The steps differ between Windows PC and consoles. Frontier lists the game for Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X/S. Its reviewed troubleshooting guidance covers those platforms; it does not establish a Nintendo Switch procedure.

  • Windows PC: Follow the checks below for game files, drivers, Windows, overlays and other software.
  • PlayStation 4 or 5: Try a full shutdown and power disconnect before reinstalling.
  • Xbox One or Series X/S: Follow the Xbox-specific shutdown steps. Hardware differs, so do not improvise a power-brick procedure if your console does not have one.

Fixes for FAR: Changing Tides crashing on Windows PC

Frontier’s PC guide presents these as troubleshooting suggestions, not a ranked or guaranteed set of fixes. The order below starts with relatively low-disruption checks and leaves hardware inspection and support escalation until later.

1. Check the PC requirements

Compare your computer with the requirements on the live storefront and Frontier support page. The two official listings differ, so do not treat either one as a guarantee that the game will launch.

Steam also says its client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. That client notice does not reconcile the game-specific Windows 7 minimum shown on Steam’s requirements page. Check the current listings before troubleshooting further.

2. Verify the game files in Steam

If you installed the game through Steam, use Steam’s file-integrity verification for the game. This checks the installed files and can replace files Steam finds damaged or missing. Frontier puts this among its initial PC checks.

3. Check graphics drivers

Make sure the graphics driver is current. Frontier notes that a newly released driver can sometimes cause problems; if the crash began after an update, consider a clean driver installation or, where appropriate, returning to a previously working version.

4. Install Windows updates

Check Windows Update and install available updates, then restart the PC before trying the game again.

5. Temporarily turn off overlays and background capture

Disable overlays and recording features temporarily, then launch the game to see whether the startup crash changes. Frontier names Steam, Xbox Game Bar, Discord and GeForce overlays, as well as background capture, among the items to check. Close other recording or overlay applications too, including OBS, FRAPS, XSplit, Overwolf, Mumble, MSI Afterburner and Shadowplay.

6. Review antivirus settings

Check whether your antivirus has flagged the game. If it has incorrectly blocked it, whitelist the game using the antivirus’s own controls. Do not disable protection indefinitely; restore your normal settings after the check if it does not help.

7. Try fullscreen and lower graphics settings

If you can reach the game’s display options, switch to fullscreen and lower graphics settings. These checks may not be available if the crash happens before the game displays its menus.

8. Temporarily change display resolution

Frontier suggests temporarily changing Windows display resolution and then restoring it. Treat this as a diagnostic check, not a permanent change: return to your preferred resolution after testing.

9. Close other demanding or conflicting applications

Before another launch attempt, close unnecessary background programs, especially screen recorders, overlays and monitoring tools. This overlaps with the overlay check but is useful if you have several such programs running at once.

10. Check for overheating

If the PC is running unusually hot or other applications are also failing, check for overheating. Frontier advises consulting a qualified technician if needed rather than guessing at a hardware repair.

11. Check the graphics-card slot only if you know the hardware

For a high-end graphics card, Frontier suggests checking that it is installed in an appropriate PCI-E slot. This is an advanced hardware inspection, not a reason to move or buy components without knowing the motherboard layout. Ask a qualified technician if you are unsure.

12. Send Frontier useful crash details

If the checks do not resolve the crash, contact Frontier Support. Include a DxDiag report and, where useful, screenshots or footage. If the game prompts you to submit an in-game crash report, do so. Describe what happened just before the crash, whether it repeats the same way, what you were doing, and whether other games or programs have crashed too.

Fixes for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5

13. Fully shut down and power-cycle the console

  1. Shut down the PlayStation completely; do not use Rest Mode.
  2. Wait until the console’s indicator light is off.
  3. Unplug the power cord and wait 30 seconds, as Frontier’s console guide instructs.
  4. Reconnect the cord and restart the console.

If the game still crashes, Frontier recommends reinstalling it from your PlayStation Library. If the problem persists, submit a support ticket to Frontier.

Fixes for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S

14. Fully shut down and disconnect power

  1. Turn the console fully off.
  2. Disconnect its power supply.
  3. Press the console’s power button several times to discharge remaining power.
  4. Reconnect the power supply. Frontier’s instructions say to wait for the power-brick light to change from white to orange, then restart.

Frontier’s article heading covers Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, but its wording refers to a power brick and Xbox One in places. If your hardware does not have the described power brick, consult current Xbox instructions or Frontier Support rather than trying to match that step. If the crash continues after the power procedure, Frontier recommends reinstalling the game and submitting a support ticket if needed.

Steam offline mode and the first launch

Frontier says the game’s first load through Steam requires an internet connection; Steam Offline Mode can be used after that initial load. This is a platform requirement, not a fix for a crash. Frontier says the game can also be obtained through the Windows Store.

When none of the steps fixes the crash

There is no official diagnosis in these guides that identifies one cause or a universal fix for startup crashes. Report persistent problems to Frontier Support with the platform, storefront, error details and the troubleshooting steps you tried. On PC, add the DxDiag report and any relevant screenshots or footage; on console, submit a support ticket.
