There is no universally accepted boundary around the label, so this list uses a practical rule: each pick must make the player’s choices about how to navigate obstacles—through stealth, combat, abilities, tools, or environmental systems—a meaningful part of play.
The ranking is an editorial judgment, not a standardized genre score. It weighs systemic interaction and improvisation, freedom of approach, stealth-action balance, role-playing progression, level design, atmosphere, and accessibility today. The tradition’s lineage is often traced through Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Thief, and Deus Ex, with later entries such as Dishonored and Prey carrying those ideas forward. The label remains debated: developers discussing Prey describe it as a family of games grounded in simulation and improvisation, while a Steam curator and scholarly discussion offer overlapping—but not definitive—examples. 15. Arx Fatalis
Arx Fatalis brings the immersive-sim tradition into a subterranean fantasy world, where exploration, character development, and interacting with the environment are central to the experience. Its place on this list reflects its importance as part of the lineage, alongside its more demanding, older-school approach: it rewards curiosity but asks players to meet it on its own terms.
14. System Shock
The original System Shock helped establish the first-person science-fiction template that later immersive sims would build upon. Its hostile station, exploration, and resource pressure make the environment part of the problem to solve, rather than simply a backdrop for combat. It ranks lower here because its age can make it less immediately approachable than later entries.
#1 Best Overall
13. Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss
Ultima Underworld is a foundational example of the tradition: a first-person fantasy world shaped around exploration and systems rather than a fixed sequence of combat encounters. Its influence matters, but its historical significance and its ease of recommendation today are different things. Players willing to adjust to an older interface and pacing will find an important ancestor of the form.
12. System Shock 2
System Shock 2 blends first-person survival horror with character progression and a richly oppressive science-fiction setting. Resource scarcity makes choices consequential, while its RPG systems let players shape how they cope with danger. Its atmosphere and systems remain powerful; its older presentation and learning curve keep it below more welcoming modern choices.
11. Thief: The Dark Project
Thief: The Dark Project makes stealth, sound, and shadows the core of its play. Instead of treating a level as a corridor to clear, it encourages players to observe spaces and move through them carefully. It is a less combat-flexible choice than several games higher on the list, but its focused stealth design is a major branch of the immersive-sim family.

10. Thief II: The Metal Age
Thief II develops the series’ stealth-first design through elaborate spaces that reward patience and attention. It is an especially good fit for players who want to plan routes and avoid detection rather than improvise through frequent firefights. Its narrow focus is a strength, though it offers less variety in approach than the broader games above it.

9. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Deus Ex: Human Revolution turns its conspiracy-driven world into a sequence of situations with multiple possible responses. The official Eidos-Montréal Deus Ex page describes freedom as central and identifies talking, fighting, and using skills as ways through obstacles. That promise of choice is the series’ defining appeal; this entry’s more directed structure makes it a little less expansive than the games ranked above.
8. Deathloop
Deathloop adapts immersive-sim ideas to a repeating-day structure, making experimentation and knowledge of the world part of progression. Its distinctive premise gives repeated encounters a purpose: players learn how the place and its inhabitants fit together, then act with that understanding. It is more tightly authored than an open-ended sandbox, but its invitation to test possibilities makes it a natural, if sometimes disputed, member of the family.

7. Thief: The Dark Project? No—Dishonored
Dishonored combines supernatural abilities, stealth, and combat in levels that invite players to choose how much risk and violence to accept. Its powers are not just spectacle: they create different ways to move, evade, and confront obstacles. It remains an excellent gateway into the genre, with a clear world and a more approachable structure than many of its ancestors.
6. Prey (2017)
Prey is one of the clearest modern expressions of improvisational immersive-sim design. The space station is both setting and toolkit: the player’s abilities, equipment, and surroundings can be combined to solve problems in different ways. The developers’ discussion of the game describes immersive sims as a family rooted in simulation and player improvisation, and traces a lineage that includes Thief, Deus Ex, Ultima Underworld, System Shock, and Arx Fatalis. The original Deus Ex remains a landmark because it makes player freedom tangible: a challenge may be approached through conversation, combat, or the skills a player has developed. Eidos-Montréal’s official page sums up the design intent: “Player freedom is at the heart of the gameplay and story of Deus Ex, where you play as JC Denton, a nano-augmented agent of the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition.” Eidos-Montréal

Its systems and branching possibilities have aged better than its interface and presentation. For players interested in the roots of modern choice-driven first-person design, however, it remains essential.
4. Dishonored 2
Dishonored 2 sharpens the series’ blend of stealth, powers, and combat with inventive levels built for alternate routes and repeat visits. Its strengths align closely with the criteria here: the player can decide how to move through a space, and the design makes experimentation worthwhile. PC Gamer’s 2025 ranking praises its player choice, level design, and replayability; that is one publication’s critical judgment, not an objective genre measurement. PC Gamer

The 2023 System Shock remake offers a modern route into the original game’s hostile-station premise and systems-driven exploration. It keeps the appeal of piecing together a dangerous environment while making the experience more accessible to contemporary players. It ranks highly as a way to encounter a classic design, though its survival-horror emphasis is less broadly flexible than the top two picks.

2. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided offers a dense, compact playground for stealth, combat, hacking, and character-build choices. It earns its place near the top for making preparation and ability selection matter in the way players handle obstacles. Its scope is more contained than the most expansive entries, but that concentration makes its spaces rewarding to revisit with a different approach.
1. Dishonored 2
Dishonored 2 takes the top spot for the balance it strikes between systemic play, legible choices, and memorable level design. Stealth, combat, supernatural abilities, and environmental opportunities can each shape a run without making any single style mandatory. PC Gamer Print Editor Robert Jones called it “the best immersive sim ever made” in the publication’s 2025 ranking—an emphatic opinion, and one that this list broadly shares. PC Gamer
Which immersive sim should you play first?
- If you liked Prey: Try System Shock 2 for another tense science-fiction setting built around exploration and character progression, or Deus Ex for a more choice-driven mix of role-playing and first-person action.
- If you want stealth: Start with Dishonored 2 for flexible powers and combat, or Thief II for a focused stealth experience.
- If you want a genre landmark: Choose Deus Ex to see how conversation, combat, and skills can offer different routes through the same problem.
- If you want a modern, tightly designed entry: Try Dishonored 2 for replayable levels and a range of approaches.
