Fallout: New Vegas takes the top spot in this 15-game ranking for its role-playing focus and faction conflict in a nuclear wasteland. The list spans more than infected-world survival: it includes machine-ruled landscapes, alien invasions, environmental catastrophe, tactical RPGs and city-building strategy. The ordering follows a June 2023 editorial list, not a current consensus or independently verified sales ranking.

How this ranking works

This ranking uses the order published by Gaming Gorilla on June 16, 2023 as its starting point. That article says it compiled its list from other web lists and based its ranking on sales and popularity, but its method is not detailed enough to validate the order independently. Treat the ranking as an editorial guide, not a definitive measure of quality.

The games are compared here by what they ask you to do, the catastrophe that shapes their worlds, and whether they emphasize a directed story or a broader systems-driven loop. A separate PS5/PS4 comparison updated September 1, 2026 ranks The Last of Us Part I, Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding at the top; it describes a different scope and a method based on Steam and PlayStation Store reviews plus RAWG catalog data. Those lists should not be combined as if they measured the same thing. The newer comparison also illustrates how differently players may define a “best” game, from story-driven adventure to open-world exploration and strategy.

The 15 best post-apocalyptic games

1. Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas puts the player in the role of the Courier, caught in a struggle over New Vegas in the nuclear-ravaged Mojave. It is the strongest fit here for players who want a role-playing game shaped by competing interests rather than a single survival objective. The 2023 list reports original releases for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with an October 19, 2010 release date; current editions and compatibility were not established in the sources cited for this ranking.

Restoration Games Thunder Road Vendetta
  • HOW TO PLAY: Race, ram, and fire your way across a deadly wasteland highway. Roll dice to move your cars, blast rivals with weapons, slam them into hazards, or call in the chopper. Win by leaving wreckage behind and surviving to the finish line.
  • SIGNATURE INFINITE ROAD: The modular double-sided road boards create the signature infinite highway in this combat game. As players speed forward, new tiles connect to keep the race going, ensuring fresh layouts and replayable challenges every time.
  • HIGH-SPEED CHAOS: Every race is packed with dicey decisions and fast turns. Choose which car to push, dodge hazards, or take daring risks that could slam opponents off the road. Unpredictable action and cinematic crashes make every match unique.
  • AUTHENTIC CLASSIC: First released in 1986, Thunder Road returns as the official restoration of the legendary combat-racing board game. Updated with modern rules, art, and miniatures, this is the classic game you remember, reimagined for today.
  • ALL-IN-ONE SET: Thunder Road Vendetta includes everything for 2 to 4 players ages 10 and up with sculpted minis for cars, choppers, and wrecks, custom dice, dashboards, and hazard tokens. Play as a standalone strategy game or the base for expansions.

2. The Last of Us

This third-person action-adventure follows Joel as he escorts Ellie across an America devastated by an infection. Its central appeal is a character-led journey through a dangerous world, rather than a city-management or open-ended survival simulation.

3. Horizon Zero Dawn

Aloy explores a machine-dominated world in this open-world action RPG, uncovering the mystery of her own past along the way. Choose it for exploration and a science-fiction catastrophe built around machines rather than nuclear war or a pandemic.

4. Gears of War 3

This third-person shooter takes place after humanity’s stronghold has fallen and another threat compounds the crisis. It is the list’s more combat-forward choice for players looking for a shooter set amid humanity’s collapse.

5. The Walking Dead

Telltale’s graphic adventure, based on the comic series, centers on decisions and their narrative consequences during a walker outbreak. It suits players who want to shape a story through choices more than master a shooter or resource-management loop.

Rank #2
Frostpunk The Board Game - Manage Society in an Ice-Age Apocalypse! Cooperative Survival Strategy Game for Adults, Ages 16+, 1-4 Players, 120-150 Minute Playtime, Made by Rebel Studio
  • POST-APOCALYPTIC SURVIVAL GAME: In Frostpunk, players will take on the role of leaders of a small colony of survivors in a post-apocalyptic world that was hit by a severe ice age. Their duty is to effectively manage both its infrastructure and citizens.
  • STRATEGY BOARD GAME: Make the Laws, send out expeditions to uncover the fate of humanity in the frozen wastes, face the consequences of your actions in front of those you swore to protect.
  • MULTIPLE PATHS TO VICTORY: The players will decide the fate of their people. Will you treat them like another resource? Are you going to be an inspiring builder, a fearless explorer, or a bright scientist? Is your rule going to be a sting of tyranny or an era of law and equality?
  • HIGHLY VARIABLE: The core gameplay is brutal, challenging, and complex, but easy to learn. The citizens won’t just be speechless pieces on the board. Society members will issue demands and react accordingly to the current mood, so every decision and action bears consequences.
  • NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: This board game is designed for 1 to 4 players and is suitable for ages 16 and older. Average playtime is approximately 120-150 minutes.

6. Metro: Last Light

In this first-person shooter, stealth and survival horror accompany life in the Moscow Metro after nuclear war. Its confined underground setting offers a different kind of wasteland journey from the open-world games elsewhere on the list.

7. Wasteland 2

This squad-based RPG is set in an alternate history shaped by nuclear war. Its focus on a team and role-playing systems makes it a natural pick for players who prefer a tactical group adventure to a single-character action game.

8. Mad Max

Mad Max turns a wasteland into an open-world action loop built around vehicle combat and upgrading Max’s car, the Magnum Opus. Pick it for driving, fighting and car progression rather than a tightly focused narrative adventure.

9. Days Gone

Set in post-pandemic Oregon, this survival action adventure follows Deacon. The 2023 list identifies PlayStation 4 as its release platform; it does not establish current platform availability or compatibility beyond that statement.

  • Engaging War Strategy Dynamics: This war board game experience immerses players in a post-apocalyptic conflict where strategic challenges and tactical tradeoffs drive every turn, delivering compelling two-player strategy and thought-provoking competitive play suited for adults.

10. Frostpunk

Frostpunk shifts the genre from roaming a ruined world to managing a settlement in a catastrophic volcanic winter. The city-building survival game revolves around keeping a community going around a generator, making it the clearest strategy choice in this ranking.

11. Death Stranding

In a devastated United States, Sam Porter Bridges delivers cargo and connects isolated communities. Its delivery-centered journey gives the apocalypse a different emphasis: rebuilding links between people rather than focusing chiefly on combat or settlement management.

12. Resistance 3

This PlayStation 3 shooter places its post-apocalyptic atmosphere in a world invaded by aliens. It broadens the list beyond human-caused war and infection, though the source used for the ranking offers little detail about its systems or story.

13. The Long Dark

A geomagnetic disaster leaves a pilot to survive in the wilderness. Unlike the list’s shooters and RPGs, this is the pick for a survival experience centered on the natural environment and the struggle to endure it.

15. State of Decay

State of Decay combines survival action with resource pressure, group morale, stealth, shooting, RPG and strategy elements. Its appeal is the management of a community under pressure, rather than a purely authored journey through the apocalypse.
