The best procedurally generated games make variation matter: a new world, route, room sequence, or set of encounters changes what you explore and how you play. This ranking is an editorial judgment, not an objective scorecard. It weighs the scale and significance of that variation, how well it serves the game, and whether the generated content supports replay without sacrificing readability or fairness.

Procedural generation can build a world or level during play, or vary other gameplay content; it is different from using procedural tools only to create assets during development. Roguelikes and roguelites often use generated levels, but the labels overlap and definitions differ, especially over how much progress carries between runs. The useful question here is what varies and how that variation affects play.

How this ranking weighs procedural generation

These games use generation at different scales. Some offer a huge space to explore; others remix compact levels or runs. The ranking favors games where that variation is a meaningful part of the experience, while considering whether it fits the central activity and produces spaces players can understand. There is no universal ranking or published scoring formula for these criteria.

The 15 best procedurally generated video games

1. No Man’s Sky

Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as an exploration and survival game set in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy. Its defining attraction is the scale: exploration, rather than repeating a short sequence of levels, is the frame for encountering varied planets, species, and resources. It earns the top spot for making generation the premise of a galaxy-spanning adventure.

2. Spelunky 2

PlayStation describes Spelunky 2’s randomly generated layouts as a reason runs differ, set within a dangerous cave network with varied environments. The compact level scale makes that variation immediately relevant to platforming: a changed layout means a changed route through hazards. It is a particularly clear example of procedural generation reinforcing a game’s core activity.

3. Minecraft

Minecraft belongs on a list spanning procedural world generation because its generated terrain supports sandbox exploration and building at a much larger scale than a run-based level. Its appeal comes from making the world a place to discover and shape, rather than a backdrop for a fixed sequence of encounters.

4. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a room-based action roguelike: its procedural variation is best understood through the changing room-and-encounter flow of a run. That scale creates a different kind of replay value from a generated open world, with each attempt organized around moving through successive rooms.

5. Hades

Hades pairs action-roguelike runs with a narrative-focused structure. Its generated room sequences provide variation within repeated attempts, while its characters and story provide an authored throughline. That distinction matters: procedural variety shapes the route through a run, not every part of the experience.

6. Slay the Spire

Slay the Spire makes run-to-run variation serve strategic decision-making. It is a strong fit for this ranking because replay is not just about seeing a different layout; a changing run asks the player to adapt a plan as it unfolds. The value lies in that strategic variation rather than world-scale exploration.

7. Dead Cells

Dead Cells brings procedural variation to action-platforming runs. Its place here reflects how a changing run can encourage another attempt while keeping movement and combat at the center. It offers a contrast to slower, map-focused games: variation is experienced through a fast-paced route and its encounters.

  • Sleek Black Color: Neutral and stylish, blending seamlessly into any space.

8. Enter the Gungeon

Enter the Gungeon is a roguelike built around dungeon-room runs. That format gives procedural generation a direct role in replay: players return to tackle another sequence of rooms and fights. Its compact, combat-oriented structure places it alongside other run-based games rather than galaxy- or world-scale explorers.

9. Risk of Rain 2

Risk of Rain 2 belongs among run-based action games, but its environments should not be described as procedurally generated: PlayStation calls them handcrafted. That makes it a useful boundary case. A game can have a replayable run structure without every prominent part of its world being generated, and the distinction is important when describing what procedural generation actually does.

10. Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress stands out for systemic world generation. The broad reference overview describes generation extending across world history, creatures, and other elements. That breadth puts it closer to world simulation than to a game that mainly remixes a sequence of rooms, and makes the generated setting central to the experience.

11. Terraria

Terraria uses a generated 2D world as the setting for exploration. Its scale and side-on format distinguish it from a run-based roguelike: the draw is discovering and traversing a world rather than replaying a compact sequence of levels. It earns a place for showing how generation can support exploration in a format different from a three-dimensional sandbox.

12. Noita

Noita is a cave-exploration candidate in which systemic play and a changing environment suit procedural generation’s appeal. Its place in this ranking reflects that fit: a generated subterranean space can make exploration and encounters feel different across attempts. Specific claims about its generation mechanics are not established here, so it is best considered as part of the broader run-based and exploration slate rather than ranked on a precise technical comparison.

13. Deep Rock Galactic

Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative cave-exploration candidate. Generation is an especially natural match for this kind of game because the explored spaces are part of the mission experience, not merely scenery. Its inclusion broadens the list beyond solo worlds and runs to cooperative exploration.

14. Rogue Legacy 2

Rogue Legacy 2 represents run-based progression: the ranking’s interest is how changing attempts and carried-forward progress can sit alongside one another. Roguelike and roguelite labels are not rigid categories, so the useful distinction is the balance between variation during a run and continuity across attempts, not a strict genre verdict.

15. Depths of Providence

Depths of Providence is the recent entry in this slate. Its Steam listing gives an August 11, 2026 release date and describes a turn-based JRPG with 100 procedurally generated floors. That premise suggests a large-scale dungeon structure, but a release listing alone does not establish how well the game executes its idea. Its last-place position reflects the difference between a compelling procedural premise and a demonstrated track record among established entries.

Why procedural generation does not mean the same thing in every game

Generation can act on different parts of play. A world-scale game uses it to support discovery across a large space; a run-based game may use it to vary level layouts, routes, or encounters; other games may generate additional gameplay elements. Procedural methods can also be used behind the scenes to make assets, which is not the same as generated content being a player-facing mechanic.

Genre labels do not settle the question. Roguelike and roguelite are commonly associated with generated levels, but people differ over how much progress should persist between runs for a game to qualify. For this list, the practical test is whether generated content meaningfully changes the player’s experience—not whether a title fits one contested label.

Choosing the right kind of procedural game

  • For exploration at the largest scale: start with No Man’s Sky, whose stated premise is a procedurally generated galaxy.
  • For compact runs where layout changes affect movement: Spelunky 2 is the clearest fit in this ranking.
  • For a generated world to explore and shape: Minecraft and Terraria offer a different structure from room-by-room runs.
  • For replay built around repeated attempts: look to the run-focused entries, such as The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Hades, Slay the Spire, Dead Cells, and Enter the Gungeon.
  • For cooperative cave exploration: Deep Rock Galactic is the list’s team-play candidate.
