The best action RPG for you depends on what you want from the genre: a demanding boss fight, a story shaped by choices, an open world to get lost in, or a fast loop of combat and rewards. This critic-curated list brings together 15 games that deliver real-time action alongside lasting character progression, while spanning very different play styles.
What makes a game an action RPG?
Bandai Namco Europe describes action RPGs as games that “fuse the immediacy of action combat with the depth of role-playing progression.” In practice, that usually means you control attacks and movement in real time while developing a character through abilities, stats, equipment, or a customized build. The boundaries are porous: some games lean toward shooting, tactical party commands, or traditional role-playing choices as much as direct action.
The 15 picks below follow Stuff’s July 2025 list by Matt Ng, rather than claiming a definitive all-time ranking. They are grouped by the kind of experience they offer, so you can find a better match than a genre label alone provides.

Jade Empire (2005)

Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)
Night City’s missions support varied approaches, from hacking and stealth to direct combat. Choose it for a story-led science-fiction world where how you build your character can change how you handle encounters.
The Outer Worlds (2019)
This satirical corporate-space adventure places dialogue, decisions, and companions alongside its combat. It is a good fit if you want role-playing and character interactions to take priority over fighting constantly.
Mass Effect 2 (2010)
Its squad-focused science-fiction story and real-time firefights make it a natural choice for players who want companions and narrative to drive the experience. Its inclusion also shows how genre boundaries can be debated: it is more tactical and party-oriented than many action RPGs.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)
Geralt’s open-world journey combines sword-and-sign combat with character progression, lore, and side quests that often have their own memorable stories. Pick it for a large fantasy world where exploration and narrative matter as much as fighting.

Black Myth: Wukong (2024)
Staff fighting, stances, dodging, spells, and major boss encounters define this action-focused journey inspired by the classic Chinese tale. It rewards players looking for expressive combat, but it should not be treated as simply another Soulslike: its mix of tools and encounters gives it a different rhythm.
Elden Ring (2022)
FromSoftware’s open-world fantasy combines demanding combat with exploration and extensive build customization. It is the pick for players who enjoy learning enemy patterns and finding their own route through a world that often leaves discovery to them. Bandai Namco Europe categorizes it as an Action RPG and lists its original release date as 25 February 2022.

NieR: Automata (2017)

For fast combat loops and repeatable runs
Hades (2020)
This isometric action game is built around repeated attempts to escape the Underworld. Mythic boons change the tools available in each run, while narrative progress continues across failures, making repetition part of both the combat and the storytelling.
Diablo III (2012)
Diablo III centers on isometric dungeon crawling, rapid combat, character classes, and loot. It is a strong fit for players who want a clear, repeatable loop of fighting through enemies, improving a build, and playing cooperatively.
How to choose the right action RPG
Rather than asking which title is objectively best, match the game to the experience you want. The same action-RPG label covers very different combat speeds, story priorities, and world structures.
- For a demanding challenge: start with Elden Ring or Black Myth: Wukong.
- For story-rich worlds: consider Cyberpunk 2077 or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
- For quick combat and repeated play: look at Hades or Diablo III.
- For open-ended exploration: Skyrim offers broad freedom, while Assassin’s Creed Odyssey places exploration in a structured action adventure.
- For party tactics: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth mixes direct combat with tactical abilities; Mass Effect 2 leans further toward squad-based play.

Why action RPG lists disagree
There is no single checklist that settles every genre dispute. Some readers expect an action RPG to center on real-time, direct-control combat and build development; others include squad shooters or role-playing games with more tactical combat. Stuff’s list includes Mass Effect 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, which are useful examples of that wider interpretation.
Contemporary recommendation lists are editorial snapshots, not consensus rankings. GamesRadar+, for example, frames its 2026 selections as a list it revisits over time. That is a reminder to compare the features that matter to you—combat feel, story, exploration, difficulty, and replayability—rather than treating any one list as a final verdict.
