No single Apple ranking defines the “best” iPad games. This retrospective combines U.S. App Store ratings and rating volume, Apple’s 2025 charts, Apple editorial selections and awards, sustained audience evidence, and the quality of each iPad experience. Ratings, prices and availability change, so treat the figures below as snapshots from the cited U.S. listings rather than permanent values.
For this list, “top-rated” means a balance of 40% star rating, 25% rating volume, 20% chart or editorial recognition, and 15% iPad suitability. A 4.9-star score from a few hundred reviews is therefore not automatically stronger evidence than 4.7 stars from tens of thousands.
How to use this list
The U.S. storefront is used because prices, ratings, age ratings, availability and in-app purchases differ by country. Apple’s 2025 charts show popularity at a point in time, not a complete annual player-count ranking. Apple named DREDGE its 2025 iPad Game of the Year and WHAT THE CLASH? its Apple Arcade winner; those awards are editorial recognition, not proof that either game had the largest audience.
“Free” below may mean free-to-play, a trial, or a free download with paid content. Apple Arcade editions marked with “+” require an active subscription, and catalogs can change.

The 16 recommendations
1. DREDGE — best overall premium adventure
Fishing, exploration, resource management and cosmic horror make DREDGE unusually well suited to a large touch display. It supports iPad, iPhone and Mac and is an Editors’ Choice title. The standard U.S. app lets you play the opening area free, then showed a $24.99 base-game unlock, with optional DLC. See the standard edition and compare it with DREDGE+, the Apple Arcade edition. The standard listing also notes lower default display settings for lower-end devices.
2. Balatro — best card game
Balatro turns poker-hand patterns into a single-player roguelike deck-builder. Its 5.0 rating from more than 100,000 U.S. ratings was the strongest broad approval signal in this group when checked. It supports iPad and controllers, and the standard app was $6.99. View the listing. It uses poker terminology but has no real-money wagering.
3. Stardew Valley — best farming and life simulator
Farming, relationships, crafting, fishing, exploration and light combat offer hundreds of hours for a $4.99 purchase when checked, with no in-app purchases listed. The U.S. listing showed about 4.8 stars from roughly 63,000 ratings and describes touch controls, a virtual joystick, mobile options and auto-save. Mobile multiplayer is not supported. Check the iPad listing.
4. Dead Cells — best action game
This “Roguevania” combines fast platform combat, procedural areas, permanent death and unlockable progression. The listing showed about 4.8 stars from roughly 12,000 ratings and a $4.99 price plus in-app purchases when checked. A Bluetooth controller is sensible for players who dislike virtual buttons. 5. Slay the Spire — best strategy deck-builder
Its tap-driven turns, readable cards and short decision cycles are excellent on iPad. Apple included it among iPad Editors’ Choice games. Expect a deliberately punishing loop rather than a conventional story RPG; verify the current price, rating and update history on the iPad games page.
6. Minecraft — best sandbox and family game
Creative building, survival, exploration and multiplayer make Minecraft one of the safest all-ages recommendations, and Apple placed it among top paid and family games. Multiplayer requires attention to Microsoft accounts, servers, subscriptions and cross-platform compatibility; not every mode or server is free. Start from Apple’s iPad games page.
7. Hello Kitty Island Adventure — best cozy social adventure
Exploration, decorating, collecting and friendship quests provide a gentle alternative to combat-heavy games. It appeared in Apple’s 2025 Apple Arcade chart and its iPad editorial selections. The Arcade edition is subscription-based, and availability or terms for any separate listing can differ. See Apple’s Arcade chart.
8. Vampire Survivors — best minimalist roguelike
You move, choose upgrades and shape a build while attacks happen automatically. That makes it easy to learn and ideal for short sessions, although later screens can become crowded. Apple listed it as an iPad Editors’ Choice game; check whether you are downloading the standard or Arcade edition on the iPad games page.

9. Disney Dreamlight Valley — best Disney life sim
Farming, decorating, quests and Disney/Pixar characters form the core loop. The Apple Arcade listing says its edition includes the base game and three expansions without in-app purchases. That is not the same commercial model as the standard free-to-start app, so compare editions before subscribing or buying. Open the App Store listing.
10. Monument Valley 3 — best visual puzzle game
Perspective-based environmental puzzles, short chapters and touch-first interaction make it approachable for non-gamers and excellent on a tablet. Apple highlighted it editorially. Decide whether the available edition is a standalone purchase or subscription access, and do not expect endless replay. Browse Apple’s iPad selections.
11. Bloons TD 6 — best tower defense
Extensive upgrade trees, hero units, maps and co-op give Bloons TD 6 far more depth than its bright presentation suggests. Apple included Bloons TD 6+ in its 2025 Arcade chart. Compare the standard game with the “+” edition because purchases and included content can differ. See the Arcade chart.
12. Good Pizza, Great Pizza — best casual management
Timed orders, shop upgrades and a light story create satisfying, accessible sessions. It appeared in Apple’s iPad charts and editorial listings. Check the current product page for ads, energy systems and purchases rather than treating it as simply free. View the iPad charts.

13. Sneaky Sasquatch — best Apple Arcade comedy adventure

14. Roblox — best game platform
Roblox is an ecosystem of user-created experiences, not one conventional game. Its checked U.S. iPad chart position and appearance in Apple’s 2025 top-free chart show strong activity signals, but chart position is not a rating. Use parental controls for chat, user-generated content and spending, and remember that quality varies by experience. See current charts and the 2025 top-free chart.
15. Fortnite — best competitive multiplayer
Battle royale and other modes provide a large competitive community, regular content and good reasons to use a controller. Apple placed it near the top of the checked iPad chart and in its 2025 free-games chart. Verify regional availability, account requirements, voice chat, storage and parental settings before installing. Open the iPad chart.
16. Geometry Dash or Among Us
Choose Geometry Dash for rhythm-platforming, instant retries and a high skill ceiling; distinguish the paid full game from Geometry Dash Lite. Choose Among Us for social deduction with friends or public matchmaking, where moderation and chat settings matter. Both appeared in Apple’s 2025 chart coverage, but their appeal is fundamentally different. Check the current chart and the 2025 top-free chart.

Best picks by need
- Best overall: DREDGE.
- Best one-time value: Stardew Valley for breadth or Balatro for compact sessions.
- Best short sessions: Balatro or Vampire Survivors.
- Best long-form game: Stardew Valley, Minecraft or Disney Dreamlight Valley.
- Best strategy: Slay the Spire or Bloons TD 6.
- Best action: Dead Cells, preferably with a controller.
- Best cozy game: Hello Kitty Island Adventure or Sneaky Sasquatch.

- Best visual puzzle: Monument Valley 3.
- Best Apple Arcade choices: DREDGE+, Sneaky Sasquatch, Hello Kitty Island Adventure or Stardew Valley+.
Touch, controllers and iPad hardware
Touch-first choices include Balatro, Slay the Spire, Monument Valley 3 and Good Pizza, Great Pizza. Stardew Valley, Minecraft and Dreamlight Valley are touch-friendly but more complex. Dead Cells and Fortnite benefit most clearly from a controller; Roblox varies by individual experience. Bluetooth compatibility alone does not guarantee that a particular app supports controllers.
Before installing a demanding 3D game, check its minimum iPadOS version, supported chip generations, download size and whether additional assets arrive later. Also check portrait or landscape orientation, offline requirements, keyboard or mouse support and whether your older iPad receives reduced graphics settings. A large screen is not automatically a better interface if controls are tiny or poorly scaled.
Free-to-play, premium or Apple Arcade?
Free-to-play
Games such as Roblox, Fortnite and Good Pizza, Great Pizza minimize the upfront cost and often have active communities, but may include ads, purchases, timers, account requirements or moderation concerns.
One-time purchase
Balatro, Stardew Valley and many premium games provide a clearer cost and usually fewer interruptions. Some, including Dead Cells and DREDGE, still sell DLC.

Arcade can be good value if you want several ad-free premium games and do not mind recurring access. It is poor value for someone who wants one inexpensive title, and access ends if the subscription ends. Edition names and included content must be checked individually.
The Bottom Line
For most iPad owners, start with DREDGE for the strongest all-round recommendation, Stardew Valley or Balatro for inexpensive premium play, and Roblox or Fortnite for free social gaming. Match the edition, controls and payment model to the way you actually play.
