For gaming alone, 16GB of RAM is still enough for many games; moving to 32GB does not guarantee higher average frame rates. The upgrade is most worthwhile if you play while streaming or running other memory-heavy apps, or if a specific game and setup show memory pressure. Check your workload and PC’s upgrade limits before buying.
What changes when you go from 16GB to 32GB?
RAM capacity is not a universal graphics or FPS setting. Intel recommends at least 16GB for modern games and says more can help when you multitask. In its 2026 game tests, TechSpot found several titles performed similarly at 16GB and 32GB, while some showed title- or system-specific effects. The results do not support a fixed FPS gain from doubling RAM.
TechSpot simulated different capacities using the same 64GB DDR5 kit and Windows 11 system, helping keep memory timings consistent between runs. When is 32GB worth it for gaming?
You run other apps while playing
The clearest general reason to choose 32GB is having more available for simultaneous tasks: for example, a game alongside a browser, voice chat, recording, or a livestream. Intel specifically names livestreaming, Discord group chat, and keeping YouTube or Twitch open as reasons to consider 32GB. Extra capacity provides headroom; it does not guarantee a faster frame rate in every game.

A particular game or setup runs short of memory
Some tested workloads showed that 16GB can be limiting. In TechSpot’s Marvel Rivals test, memory use was around 18GB in the 32GB and 64GB configurations. In its Mafia: The Old Country test, the review found that around 20GB of system memory was required for a smooth experience. Those are results from that review’s configurations and workloads, not universal requirements for every player.
You want steadier frame times, not just a higher average
When memory is under pressure, average FPS alone may not show the whole experience: frame-time consistency and 1% lows matter too. TechSpot reported that 32GB improved 1% lows by more than 60% in its specific Marvel Rivals test using a graphics card with 8GB of VRAM. That result depends on the tested game and setup; it should not be treated as a typical gain from upgrading.

System RAM and graphics-card VRAM are different
System RAM is your computer’s main memory; VRAM is memory on the graphics card. Steam’s in-game overlay reports the two separately. In one TechSpot test scenario, an 8GB graphics-card configuration put more asset pressure on system memory. This illustrates how the two resources can interact in some setups, not a rule that applies to every GPU or game.
To check usage while playing, enable Steam’s performance overlay and look at physical system memory and video memory separately. Steam advises that if system-memory use is near the machine’s maximum, closing other applications or adding RAM may help. Usage alone does not prove that a RAM upgrade will improve a particular game, so compare what you observe with relevant game-specific testing. See Steam’s performance overlay instructions.

How to decide what your PC needs
- Test your usual workload. Play a representative game session with the browser, voice chat, streaming, recording, or other apps you normally keep open.
- Check system memory and VRAM separately. Use Steam’s performance overlay to see whether system RAM approaches its limit. Do not mistake graphics-card memory use for system RAM use.
- Look beyond average FPS. If the game feels inconsistent, consider frame-time behavior and 1% lows as well as average frame rate. Match any comparison to your game, GPU, settings, and configuration.
- Check compatibility before shopping. Confirm your system’s memory type, form factor, supported maximum capacity, available slots, and whether it can be upgraded. Intel notes that desktops commonly use DIMMs and laptops commonly use SO-DIMMs; some laptop memory is soldered and not intended for replacement.
- Weigh the cost against your actual use. Choose a compatible 32GB kit when your concurrent workload or observed memory pressure justifies the extra capacity. If you mostly play games alone and your system has no memory bottleneck, 16GB may be sufficient; current kit prices vary and are not established here.

Not necessarily. Steam explains that Windows can cache frequently used files when sufficient RAM is available, which may make levels load or relaunch faster. That supports a possible benefit from file caching, but it does not establish that moving from 16GB to 32GB always reduces loading times. See Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance.
