To solve Wordle in fewer guesses, make each turn do one of two jobs: test a likely answer or eliminate as many plausible answers as possible. Start with a familiar five-letter word that covers several common letters without repeats. Then keep green letters fixed, move yellow letters to new positions, and use unmarked letters to narrow the field. There is no universally best starter: the right choice depends on whether you value information, a chance at an immediate solve, or the constraints of Hard Mode.
What each guess should accomplish
Wordle gives you six guesses to find a five-letter answer. Green feedback means the letter is correct and in the right position; yellow means it appears in the answer but belongs elsewhere; an unmarked letter is absent. Those rules are described in the Wordle rulebook, which says the physical game plays like the digital version.
A guess has two kinds of value. It can be a plausible answer, or it can reveal information that rules out many answers. Sometimes one word does both. When the board leaves many candidates, however, a probe that tests fresh letters can be more useful than betting on one uncertain answer—if you are playing standard mode.
Choose a starter that fits your goal
A strong opening word tests several common letters in useful positions and avoids wasting a slot on duplicates. Familiarity matters too: a word you can recall and interpret quickly is more practical than an obscure choice whose theoretical advantage you cannot use.

TechRadar’s page, accessed October 3, 2026, reports WordleBot’s top standard-mode tier as SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, CRATE, and CARTE, each rated 99/100. For Hard Mode, it lists CLASP, SCALD, and PLACE as tied high choices. These are reported rankings, not an official or permanent NYT rule. The same article documents that starter recommendations have changed over time, and no current primary NYT source establishes a definitive live ranking. See TechRadar’s starter-word report.
Pick according to what “better” means to you:
- Favor a chance to solve immediately: Choose a common, valid word that could plausibly be the answer. This keeps a one-guess solve in play.
- Favor information: Choose a word that tests useful letters and positions, even if it is less likely to be the answer itself. This can help distinguish a crowded set of candidates.
- Favor ease of use: Use a familiar word with distinct letters, then stick with it long enough to learn how its feedback guides your next move.
There is no single “best Wordle starting word” independent of the answer list, scoring objective, game mode, and date. A mathematically strong elimination word and a likely answer are not necessarily the same word.

Use letter frequency as a clue, not a rule
Common letters are useful to test, but frequency alone cannot identify the answer. TechRadar reports E, A, R, O, and T as its five most frequent letters across the answer data it analyzed. Its reported counts are E (1,230), A (975), R (897), O (753), and T (729); these describe that dataset, not an invariant or guaranteed distribution for future answers. The source also reports common starting letters including S, C, B, P, and T, and common final letters including E, Y, T, R, and L. These positional tendencies can help you assess candidates, but the actual pattern and valid word list still matter. The figures appear in TechRadar’s analysis.

- Green: Keep the letter in that exact position.
- Yellow: Keep the letter in the answer, but move it to a different position.
- Unmarked: Usually eliminate the letter, while checking for repeated-letter complications before ruling out a candidate.
Then choose a word that fits all known constraints and, where possible, tests remaining common letters. If several answers still fit, consider whether learning more is worth more than trying your current favorite. Standard mode allows a deliberate information-gathering guess that does not use every known green or yellow clue; that can be valuable when the candidate set remains broad.
Repeated letters require care. A word can contain a letter more than once, and feedback for one occurrence does not always tell you what you first expect about another. When the colors seem contradictory, inspect the guess for duplicates and compare each occurrence with the answer pattern rather than treating an unmarked tile as proof that the letter is wholly absent.

Decide whether Hard Mode suits your approach
Hard Mode changes which probes you can make: revealed green and yellow information must be used in later guesses. That makes it harder to spend a turn testing a fresh set of letters while ignoring clues already earned. Standard mode leaves that information-first option open. The distinction changes the legal moves, not whether one mode is inherently better; choose the constraint that makes the game more enjoyable or challenging for you.
The available rules source describes the six-guess game and its color feedback for the physical adaptation. Because it is not a primary guide to the digital mode’s current interface, treat the Hard Mode description here as the strategic distinction rather than a claim about a particular current menu path.

What historical numbers can—and cannot—tell you
In a 2022 report, The New York Times said that among users who had played more than 10 games during June 15–August 22, 28% used the same starting word at least 90% of the time. It also reported that ADIEU was used by an average of 5% of users each day during that period. Those figures describe past player habits and the word’s popularity, not how effective it is. One player quoted in the report liked ADIEU because “It contains all the vowels except O and possibly Y,” and noted that “D is fairly common.” That explains a preference; it does not establish ADIEU as optimal. Read the Times’ 2022 report.
A 2022 strategy paper, Using Wordle for Learning to Design and Compare Strategies, simulated play against a historical set of 2,315 answers. Its Hard Mode baseline averaged 4.078 guesses and failed to solve within six trials 1.77% of the time. The best of its tested parameterized strategies averaged 3.674 guesses and failed 0.65% of the time on that simulation. These are results for the paper’s dataset and simulator—not a promise about human play, today’s answer list, or your personal average. The study is available at arXiv:2205.11225.
