How to choose a Switch game for a child
Read the rating category and descriptors together
An ESRB category is a starting point, not a complete description of a game. Nintendo says ratings have two parts: “a Rating Category that suggests age appropriateness, and Content Descriptors that indicate elements of particular interest or concern.” Read the descriptors on the specific edition you’re considering, especially notes about online interaction or in-game purchases. Ratings and labels can vary by region. See Nintendo Support’s ESRB overview and the ESRB ratings guide.
For example, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is rated E by ESRB, but its listing includes Comic Mischief, Mild Fantasy Violence, Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. An Everyone rating does not mean every family feature is irrelevant to a parent.

Match the game’s demands to the child
Genres call for different abilities. Nintendo’s parent guide describes racing as involving hand-eye coordination, simulation as involving reading and problem-solving, and party games as requiring players to understand rules and coordinate. A child who can handle a puzzle at their own pace may find a fast platform game frustrating; a confident reader may get more from a life simulation than a pre-reader. Nintendo’s game-category guide can help you compare these demands.
Age guidance below is a useful orientation, not an official minimum age. Nintendo Life’s recommendations consider coordination and skill as well as ratings, and advise parents to decide what fits their own child. Check the rating for your country and the edition you plan to buy.

Confirm the system and edition
Some recommendations are original Nintendo Switch games; others have a Switch 2 version or an updated Switch 2 Edition. Verify the product listing for your console before purchase, including what that edition contains. Nintendo’s 2026 investor material lists Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as released January 15, 2026; availability and compatibility details should be checked against the current listing for your region.

For younger or newer players
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the obvious choice for a child drawn to racing and short competitive rounds. Nintendo Life’s 3–4 guidance reflects its assessment of coordination and skill, not an ESRB age limit. If steering and speed are still difficult, try a game with slower exploration or puzzles instead.
Rank #4
- Journey through space in two Super Mario adventures, now improved for the Nintendo Switch system!
- Travel the stars with enhanced resolution, improved UI, and additional content
- Learn more about the Lumas from additional Storybook chapters, groove to a bit of additional music
- Get additional Health and fall recovery in Assist Mode
- Join Rosalina and the Lumas to restore the Comet Observatory and rescue Princess Peach in Super Mario Galaxy.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land offers exploration and action, but its reported ESRB rating is Everyone 10+ with Cartoon Violence. For a child who enjoys figuring out spaces and objects more than fast reactions, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a puzzle-focused alternative.
For children ready for longer adventures
Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! give Pokémon fans a guided adventure, while Super Mario Odyssey rewards wandering and experimenting. Princess Peach: Showtime! changes up its action across different theatrical settings. Their age guidance in the table comes from Nintendo Life, so use it as a skill cue and inspect the edition’s rating descriptors.
Best Value
- Become the Hero of Time and save Hyrule from darkness
- Venture into dungeons, solve puzzles, and travel across time in two different eras to restore balance to the land
- A classic tale, reborn for the Nintendo Switch 2 system, featuring voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, visuals built from the ground up for Nintendo Switch 2, and more
- Play Link’s in-game ocarina by humming or singing into the Nintendo Switch 2 system microphone
For more demanding platforming, consider Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition. A child who enjoys precision and quick timing may welcome that challenge; one who gets frustrated by missed jumps may prefer a puzzle or simulation game.
For creative play and independent exploration
Minecraft is a strong candidate for children who want to build and invent rather than follow one fixed path. Its open-ended play can require reading and problem-solving, so consider how independently the child can navigate menus and goals.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is slower and centered on island life, collecting and decorating. Nintendo Life notes that resident interactions and item names benefit from basic reading. It also has a shared-console consideration: one island and one Resident Representative per console, which can matter if siblings each expect a separate island. See Nintendo Life’s game notes.
For family and group play
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the LEGO titles and Super Mario Party Jamboree may suit households looking for shared play, while Splatoon 3 is more oriented toward action and online or local multiplayer. Before buying for multiplayer, confirm how many players are supported, what controllers are needed, and whether online play or a subscription is involved. Nintendo notes that extra games, systems or accessories may be required for some multiplayer experiences.

What to check before buying
- Exact edition: Match the listing to Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. A Switch 2 Edition or upgrade may differ from the original game; don’t assume the title or compatibility is identical.
- Rating details: Check the category and content descriptors for the exact regional product. Pay particular attention to Users Interact and In-Game Purchases where those labels appear.
- Skill and reading: Consider the child’s comfort with coordination, rule-following, reading and problem-solving—not just their age.
- Multiplayer setup: Confirm local/online options, player count and any required controllers, additional system or membership on the current product page.
- Shared-console expectations: For Animal Crossing, understand the one-island-per-console structure before multiple children start playing.
