The best villager trades in Minecraft are the ones that turn items you can reliably obtain into something your world needs now—such as food, equipment, maps, or enchantments. There is no single universal top 18: offers, costs, and even some enchantment rules depend on the game edition, version, and world settings. Use the guide below to decide which profession and trade role belongs in your setup, then confirm the offer in your world before building around it.
What makes a villager trade worth keeping?
Judge an offer by the value of its output for your current stage, how easily you can gather its input again, its emerald cost, and whether you can access the villager’s workstation to restock. A trade that supplies a needed item or converts a renewable surplus may be more useful than a high-value offer you rarely need.
Minecraft describes villager trading as an exchange of items and emeralds for goods such as equipment, maps, and food. The game’s interface is designed to show what is for sale, its cost, and how much the player has paid; Minecraft designer Jens Bergensten explained that this clarity was a reason for using an interface. Minecraft’s villager overview introduces the professions and trading system.
18 villager trade roles to consider
This is a practical shortlist of trade roles, not a claim that every listed offer is available at a particular price in every world. The official sources establish the professions and general mechanics but do not provide a complete current offer-and-price table for every edition, version, profession level, and setting. Check a villager’s actual offer before committing resources.

For steady supplies and everyday resources
- Farmer: Consider a farmer when you can produce surplus crops and want access to food-related exchanges. Its value depends on the crops you can renew and the offers available in your version.
- Fisherman: A useful profession to check if fishing-related goods fit your needs. Compare its available output with what you can obtain more easily through your own resource gathering.
- Fletcher: Worth considering when its ranged-combat or material-related offers suit your plans. Whether it deserves a permanent workstation depends on the actual offer and your access to its inputs.
- Butcher: Check this role when food supplies are a priority and you have a dependable source of relevant items. Do not assume a fixed cost or offer without checking your world.
- Shepherd: A candidate for players with renewable wool or other relevant materials. Its usefulness rises when the inputs are easy to produce and the offered goods solve a current need.
- Mason: Consider a mason if its building-material exchanges match a construction project. The right choice depends on the blocks you use and which offers your villager actually has.
For equipment and progression
- Armorer: A role to evaluate when you need armor-related goods. Compare the offer with your current equipment and the resources or emeralds needed to acquire it.
- Toolsmith: Consider this villager when tool-related goods would save time or help your progression. Confirm the item and price shown in the trade interface before relying on it.
- Weaponsmith: A potential source of weapon-related goods. Its priority depends on whether the available equipment is useful to you compared with crafting or other sources.
- Leatherworker: One of the official profession examples linked to a cauldron workstation. Consider its offers only if the goods and inputs are useful in your version and world.
- Cleric: A profession to inspect when its available goods support your current goals. The role is part of Minecraft’s official list of villager professions, but the cited overview does not establish a complete, version-specific offer table.
For maps, enchantments, and specialized needs
- Cartographer: Consider a cartographer when maps or exploration-related goods are useful. Its place in your setup depends on the offer shown and whether you need that output.
- Librarian: Often the first profession players investigate for enchantment-related offers, but treat biome-specific claims with care. A proposed librarian rebalance appeared as an experimental feature in Java snapshot 23w31a; it is not established as the universal default across editions and worlds.
- Wandering trader: Not a villager workstation trade, but a separate trader that may be relevant when considering access to goods. The 2023 snapshot also described experimental changes to wandering-trader offers, so check whether the relevant feature is enabled.
How to turn the shortlist into 18 individual offers
The available official sources do not support naming 18 exact, universally available offers with reliable prices. Rather than inventing a trade list, use these additional offer-selection slots for the professions above: choose a second farmer offer, a second fletcher offer, a second librarian offer, a second cartographer offer, a second armorer offer, and a second toolsmith offer only when each appears in your version and is useful to your needs. These are selection categories, not guarantees that a specific item or price will appear.
For any offer you consider, record the item received, the required inputs, the emerald cost, the villager’s level, and whether the offer can be replenished. That turns “best” into a world-specific decision rather than a ranking that may not apply to your edition or settings.

Workstations, restocking, and prices
A villager’s profession is tied to a job-site block; Minecraft’s release notes give a lectern for librarians and a cauldron for leatherworkers as examples. The notes say villagers need access to their workstation to restock and can restock up to twice per day. They also state that prices depend on reputation and demand, and that Hero of the Village reduces prices, with the reduction scaling by effect level. These are mechanics described in the 2019 Java release notes; verify behavior for your target version and edition in-game. Read Minecraft’s Village & Pillage release notes.
- Place the appropriate job-site block and ensure the villager can reach and work at it.
- Check that the villager has restocked before planning repeated purchases around the same offer.
- Expect prices to vary with the mechanics described above rather than treating one quoted cost as universal.
Do librarian trades depend on biome?
Biome-specific librarian enchantments were part of the experimental trade rebalance described in Java snapshot 23w31a. That snapshot proposed different enchantments by village biome and one biome-exclusive enchantment available only from master librarians; it also required enabling the feature toggle in world creation to test the changes. Do not assume this system is active in an ordinary world.

Minecraft’s Java 1.21 notes document trade-related enchantment providers and tags, including material associated with the experimental rebalance. That documentation does not establish that the rebalance is enabled by default in all Java worlds or available in every edition. Check the edition, version, and experimental settings for the world you are playing. Snapshot 23w31a notes and Java Edition 1.21 notes describe the relevant changes.

- Identify the need. Decide whether you need food, building resources, equipment, maps, or another specific output.
- Find a matching profession. Minecraft’s listed professions include farmers, fishermen, fletchers, butchers, clerics, armorers, leatherworkers, librarians, masons, cartographers, shepherds, toolsmiths, and weaponsmiths. Nitwits do not trade.
- Inspect the actual offer. Compare the displayed item and cost against what you can gather or craft. Avoid relying on an offer list that omits your edition, version, world settings, or villager level.
- Check renewability. Make sure you can obtain the required items again and that the workstation is accessible if you expect the villager to restock.
- Check enchantment settings separately. If you are seeking a biome-dependent librarian offer, establish whether the experimental rebalance is enabled for that world rather than inferring it from the biome alone.
- Keep only useful capacity. Give workstations and trading space to offers that serve a recurring need; a trade that does not fit your plans need not be part of your setup.
Why there is no reliable universal price list here
Offer availability and cost are not interchangeable across editions, versions, villager levels, and experimental settings. The official villager overview and release notes cited here do not provide a complete current table covering every offer and price. The safest practical guide is the offer displayed by the villager in your own world, interpreted with the relevant version and settings in mind.
