18 PlayStation Classics That Deserve Full Remakes

The roundup titled 12 PlayStation Classics That Deserve a Full Remake actually names 18 games. This corrected list keeps every candidate while separating two different questions: which originals have the strongest case for a ground-up remake, and which already received a remaster, port, or other modern version.

The list comes from Cheat Code Central Staff’s May 14, 2026 opinion article, not an official Sony, publisher, or developer announcement. Its release-history details are therefore presented as source-reported context rather than independently confirmed availability. You can read the original roundup at Cheat Code Central.

Why this is an 18-game list, not a 12-game list

The source headline says “12,” but its body names Wipeout, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, Fear Effect, Final Fantasy VIII, The Legend of Dragoon, Alundra, Brave Fencer Musashi, PaRappa the Rapper, Syphon Filter, Dino Crisis, Omega Boost, Twisted Metal, Final Fantasy Tactics, Ape Escape, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid, and Bloodborne. Omitting six of those games would reproduce the source’s internal error, so this article evaluates all 18.

They are not one uniform remake slate. The candidates span racing, stealth, horror, role-playing, rhythm, shooting, platforming, and car-combat traditions, and they come from both the original PlayStation era and the PS4 generation. A full remake would mean rebuilding presentation, controls, technology, and often systems—not simply increasing resolution.

How to decide whether a classic needs a full remake

A remake earns its place when modern development can solve a real barrier without erasing the original’s identity. Four tests are especially useful:

  • Playability today: Would current displays, control expectations, or platform access make the original unusually difficult to approach?
  • Distinctive mechanics: Does the game have a clear central idea that can be rebuilt rather than replaced by generic modern design?
  • World and story potential: Could new art, sound, writing tools, or performance expand the experience without changing its character?
  • Status: Has a remaster, port, or later sequel already addressed the basic access problem? A modern version may reduce the urgency even when a remake would still be desirable.

Those tests produce a wish list, not a prediction. Nothing in the source confirms that any of these remakes is in production.

Wipeout

Wipeout is the clearest argument for rebuilding a racing game around speed as a visual and physical sensation. A full remake could make high-speed courses readable on modern screens, give every vehicle a consistent handling model, and preserve the severe precision that separates this series from ordinary arcade racing. The source identifies the 2017 Wipeout Omega Collection as the latest release context, so the case here is not basic preservation alone: it is the possibility of a new technical showcase that treats futuristic design, music, and velocity as one system.

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins

Tenchu’s remake case depends on discipline. A modern version should not turn stealth into a conventional action game; it should make detection, movement, enemy awareness, and mission choice legible while retaining the tension of operating unseen. The source places the original in 1998 and names Tenchu: Shadow Assassins as a later 2008 PSP release. That gap leaves room for a carefully designed stealth framework, but accessibility options and clear tutorials would matter as much as sharper graphics.

Fear Effect

Fear Effect deserves a remake when atmosphere is treated as a design requirement rather than a coat of paint. Its dark visual identity and horror positioning could benefit from modern lighting, facial animation, camera work, and sound, provided the remake keeps the unsettling mood instead of sanding it into generic action. The source reports a 2000 PlayStation original and Fear Effect Sedna on PS4 in 2018. Those later appearances make continuity useful, but they do not by themselves answer whether the original is readily playable today.

Final Fantasy VIII

Final Fantasy VIII is a candidate for a systems-first remake. Any rebuild would have to decide which unusual progression and combat ideas are essential, explain them more clearly, and rebalance the experience without flattening its identity into a safer template. The source lists the original as a 1999 PlayStation release and cites Final Fantasy VIII Remastered on PS4 in 2019. A full remake would therefore need to offer more than improved models: it would need a coherent answer to how the game should feel for new players.

The Legend of Dragoon

The Legend of Dragoon has the ingredients for a large-scale role-playing remake: a strong visual identity, a long-form adventure, and room for modern pacing and presentation. The priority should be preserving the timing and tactical character that distinguish its battles while making menus, camera work, and exploration easier to read. The source gives 1999 as the original year and cites a Classics Collection version for PS4 and PS5 in 2023. That reported modern release lowers the access barrier, but a ground-up interpretation could still serve a different purpose.

Alundra

Alundra’s remake opportunity is precision. A new version could retain demanding puzzle design and top-down exploration while improving collision feedback, map clarity, saving, and visual readability. It should resist replacing authored puzzles with waypoint-driven navigation. The source reports a 1997 PlayStation debut and a PSOne Classics release on PS3 in 2010. Because the later version is described as a classic release rather than a rebuilt edition, the original design would remain the main attraction of any remake.

Brave Fencer Musashi

Brave Fencer Musashi could support a remake that expands its world without losing its playful tone. Modern animation, expressive character work, and smoother action would help, but the project would need a sharply defined rhythm between exploration, combat, and story. The source dates the PlayStation game to 1998 and names Musashi: Samurai Legend on PS2 in 2005 as its later release context. That sequel-era connection is not evidence of a current remake; it simply shows why a fresh, focused interpretation would be distinct.

PaRappa the Rapper

PaRappa the Rapper should be remade only if timing remains the star. Better audio mixing, input calibration, accessibility controls, and display synchronization could make its rhythm challenges more dependable on current hardware. New art or songs should support the call-and-response structure rather than bury it. The source cites the 1997 PlayStation original and a PS4 remaster from 2017, so the argument is not that the concept has never been modernized. It is that a full remake could make the musical interaction more robust while protecting its deliberately simple charm.

Syphon Filter

Syphon Filter is suited to a remake built around mission variety and readable tactical choices. Modern controls, enemy behavior, checkpointing, and camera design could remove friction while keeping the focused spy-thriller identity. The source lists a 1999 PlayStation release and Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow on PS2 in 2007 as the latest context it provides. A remake should establish a clear visual language for stealth, shooting, and objectives instead of treating the game as a generic third-person shooter.

Dino Crisis

Dino Crisis has one of the most immediately understandable remake premises in the list: rebuild survival horror around intelligent threats, scarcity, and sustained pressure. The danger is overcorrecting toward spectacle and losing the vulnerability that makes horror work. The source identifies the original as a 1999 PlayStation game and lists Dino Crisis 3 on Xbox in 2003 as the later release context. That information does not confirm a current edition of the original, which is why a faithful modern reconstruction remains an appealing idea.

  • Live the adventure like never before with the features and incredible speed of the PlayStation 5 console.

Omega Boost

Omega Boost could return as a compact, high-impact action experience rather than an oversized open world. A remake should clarify its movement, target selection, camera behavior, and encounter pacing while preserving the focused arcade energy implied by its original format. The source gives 1999 as the PlayStation release and says the original is the latest release it lists. It also refers to the game as “Omega Blast” in places, an apparent naming error; the correct title should be verified before publication materials are finalized.

Twisted Metal

Twisted Metal’s remake case is about turning vehicle combat into a complete modern game without removing its chaotic personality. Destruction, arena readability, weapon feedback, and distinct vehicle identities would need to work together in every match. The source dates the original to 1995 and cites a 2012 PS3 game as the latest release context. That later entry means a remake should define what it is reviving—specific arena combat and character-driven spectacle—rather than assuming any new car-combat game would satisfy the same audience.

Final Fantasy Tactics

Final Fantasy Tactics requires status-aware wording. The source reports Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles for September 30, 2025 on PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S, describing it as a remaster of the original plus the complete PS1 version. Those details were not independently verified here, so they should be treated as the roundup’s report. More importantly, this candidate cannot honestly be presented as an untouched classic still waiting for any modern version. The remaining remake argument would concern how far a future rebuild should go beyond that reported release while preserving its grid-based tactical identity.

Ape Escape

Ape Escape could use a remake to make movement and input feel natural across modern controllers while keeping its gadget-driven platforming structure. The best version would explain each tool through level design, reward experimentation, and avoid turning every challenge into a checklist. The source lists the original in 1999 and PlayStation Move: Ape Escape on PS3 in 2010. That motion-focused release is relevant context, but it does not establish that the original has received a current, standard-control remake.

Vagrant Story

Vagrant Story is a demanding remake candidate because its systems are part of its identity. A new edition would need to clarify equipment, combat timing, inventory decisions, and environmental navigation without reducing the game’s density to a simplified action RPG. The source reports a 2000 PlayStation original and a 2011 version available on PS3 and PSP. Those releases may preserve access in some form, yet the game’s complexity and visual ambition make it a strong test of whether a remake can modernize usability without removing depth.

Xenogears

Xenogears would need an unusually careful production plan. A remake could improve presentation, pacing, transitions, and interface design, but it should not promise a larger world merely for scale. The source gives 1998 as the PlayStation release and cites PSOne Classics on PS3 in 2011. The most defensible case is therefore a substantial reworking that respects the original’s role-playing structure and narrative ambition, with transparent decisions about what is expanded, condensed, or left intact.

Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid remains a remake candidate only if the project understands that staging, camera control, sound cues, and scripted tension are inseparable from its stealth design. Updated controls can help newcomers, but a more modern action model could change the experience as much as new graphics do. The source lists the 1998 PlayStation original and Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, Vol. 1 on PS4 and PS5 in 2023. That reported collection provides a preservation route; a full remake would need a clearly different purpose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bloodborne

Bloodborne is the outlier: it is the only PS4-era game in the list, released in 2015 rather than during the original PlayStation generation. Its inclusion reflects the source’s broader idea of a PlayStation classic, not a strict 1990s-only definition. A full remake would have to justify itself through meaningful technical, control, or accessibility improvements instead of treating age alone as the reason. The source lists no later release for it, but that absence is a statement about what the article records, not proof of a current market or platform status.

Which candidates have the strongest remake logic?

Using the four tests above, the most persuasive projects are not automatically the most famous. Dino Crisis, Tenchu, Wipeout, Alundra, Omega Boost, and Ape Escape all have clear mechanical identities that modern technology could make easier to read without replacing them. Fear Effect, Xenogears, and Vagrant Story present larger artistic or structural challenges, but those challenges are precisely why a thoughtful remake could be valuable.

Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy VIII, The Legend of Dragoon, PaRappa the Rapper, and Metal Gear Solid already have source-reported modern versions or collections in the list’s history. Their remake cases should therefore be judged by what a ground-up rebuild would add, not by a claim that no newer edition exists. Bloodborne is similarly a special case because it is much newer than the other entries.

What a responsible remake announcement would still need to prove

  • Scope: Is the project a faithful rebuild, a redesign, or a remaster with upgraded assets?
  • Systems: Which mechanics are preserved, and which are changed for modern controls or accessibility?
  • Availability: On which platforms and in which regions will it launch?
  • Preservation: Will the original remain playable, and is the remake replacing or supplementing it?
  • Evidence: Is the information an official announcement, or only editorial speculation?

Until a publisher or developer confirms otherwise, all 18 names remain recommendations for what deserves serious consideration—not a promised release schedule.
