GamesBeat and GameSpot reported the same order for NPD’s annual U.S. chart:
- Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
- Battlefield 1
- Tom Clancy’s The Division
- NBA 2K17
- Madden NFL 17
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Overwatch
- Call of Duty: Black Ops III
- FIFA 17
- Final Fantasy XV
The order is corroborated by GamesBeat’s report and GameSpot’s report. Activision separately stated on January 20, 2017, that Infinite Warfare was the No. 1 top-selling console video game in the U.S. for 2016 by revenue and units, based on physical and digital sales and excluding hardware bundles. That is the publisher’s account of NPD’s finding, not a disclosed title-level sales breakdown.
What “best-selling” means in this chart
GameSpot described the annual ranking as ordered by dollar sales. It should not be confused with a different NPD-attributed chart in the Entertainment Software Association’s 2017 Essential Facts report, which labels its top 20 games “by units sold.” Rankings by dollars and units are different measures; one cannot be substituted for the other.

The NPD results quoted by GameSpot covered new physical video-game products and a subset of full-game digital downloads from participating publishers. The report said it was not intended to cover total market or total consumer spending. GamesBeat also noted that PC digital tracking included Steam but not other stores such as Origin. The list is therefore a reported U.S. sales chart with defined coverage, not a complete ledger of every game sale.
Why other 2016 charts can show different positions
Charts answer different questions when geography, sales measure, platform, or channel changes. Sony’s official 2016 PlayStation Store download ranking placed Battlefield 1 second and Infinite Warfare fourth among PS4 downloads. That platform-store list is not a contradiction of the NPD all-platform U.S. ranking: it measures downloads in one store on one console, rather than the broader sales coverage described above.

GamesBeat also cautioned that the NPD chart did not track PC sales through Blizzard’s Battle.net platform, and suggested Overwatch’s No. 7 position may understate its sales across all channels. That is the reporter’s assessment of the chart’s coverage, not an official adjustment to the ranking.

The top two positions establish that Infinite Warfare led the reported chart and Battlefield 1 followed it. The reviewed reports do not provide either game’s sales total or the dollar or unit gap between them, so their ordinal positions cannot be used to estimate how close the race was.

The ESA’s 2017 Essential Facts offers broader context: it attributes 2016 U.S. best-selling game super-genre shares by units sold of 27.5% for shooters, 22.5% for action, 12.9% for role-playing, and 11.7% for sports. Those are genre shares, not the share or unit count of either leading game. The same report puts total consumer spending on the video game industry at $30.4 billion in 2016; that broad industry figure is not software revenue for this chart.
