The best Nintendo Switch game for a young child depends on how they like to play: choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for short races, Yoshi’s Crafted World for a gentler platform-game starting point, Kirby and the Forgotten Land for an adventure with an easier mode, or Animal Crossing: New Horizons for slower, open-ended play. There is no single age that fits every child. Compare the game’s controls, reading demands, challenge, and multiplayer setup with the child in front of you.

Best picks by play style

Game Best fit Play together What to consider
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Children who enjoy short, lively races and competition Nintendo’s Spanish-market children’s page says local multiplayer supports up to eight racers. Confirm the local setup and edition for your market. Nintendo classifies racing games as a genre that can call on hand-eye coordination. The ESRB rating listed in Nintendo’s genre guide is Everyone with Comic Mischief.
Yoshi’s Crafted World A possible first platform game for a child who wants a colorful, gentler adventure Two-player co-op is available, according to Nintendo Life; Nintendo also lists it among cooperative games for two. Nintendo Life describes it as an introductory platformer. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that every child will find it easy or an official age recommendation. Nintendo Life lists ESRB Everyone.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land A child interested in a 3D adventure who may benefit from an easier setting Nintendo lists it among two-player cooperative games. Nintendo Life says optional Spring-Breeze Mode lowers the difficulty and describes the game as forgiving. The same guide lists ESRB Everyone 10+ with Cartoon Violence.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons Children who enjoy decorating, collecting, and setting their own pace Check the specific multiplayer mode and setup before buying for shared play. Nintendo lists it as a simulation example and says simulation games can involve reading and problem-solving. Nintendo’s genre guide lists ESRB Everyone with Comic Mischief.

How to choose a good first Switch game

Match the challenge to the child

Think about the controls and the kind of challenge the child already enjoys, rather than choosing by age alone. A racing game asks for steering and timing; a platform game asks for movement and jumping; a simulation may ask the player to read prompts and make choices. Nintendo’s genre guide describes these as common demands, not pass-or-fail requirements for children.

  • For quick rounds and a clear goal, consider Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
  • For a platform adventure, consider Yoshi’s Crafted World; Nintendo Life’s “introductory” description is a reviewer judgment, not a promise of ease.
  • For a 3D adventure with a lower-difficulty option, consider Kirby and the Forgotten Land, while taking its ESRB Everyone 10+ rating and Cartoon Violence descriptor into account.
  • For self-directed play, consider Animal Crossing: New Horizons if the child can manage its reading and enjoys open-ended activities.

Decide whether reading is part of the fun

Children vary in how comfortably they read and follow written prompts. Nintendo notes that simulation games can involve reading and problem-solving, which is relevant when considering Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If a child is still learning to read, consider whether an adult will be available to help with menus, instructions, and choices.

Use ratings as a screening tool

A rating helps parents check a game’s content, but it does not prescribe a universal age for every child. Nintendo advises parents to consult the rating system used in their country. The ESRB ratings above apply to the North American rating system; do not convert them into PEGI or another regional rating without checking the local listing. Nintendo’s parent information explains the role of local software ratings.

Which games work for playing with a parent?

Local co-op can turn a game into a shared activity, but player counts alone do not tell you whether the setup will suit your household. Check whether the game supports local or online play, how many players can join, and what controllers or systems are required. Nintendo notes that multiplayer may require additional games, systems, or accessories.

Set up parental controls before handing over the console

Nintendo’s controls let parents set software age restrictions and communication restrictions. Nintendo also describes app features such as play-time limits and gameplay history; ESRB notes that eShop content visibility and purchase restrictions are available. Some settings depend on console and app versions, so follow the current setup instructions rather than relying on an older walkthrough.
