Three visible gaming stories stood out in 2025: Mario Kart World launched with Nintendo Switch 2, Team Ninja marked its 30th anniversary with a new Ninja Gaiden game and a remaster, and companies showed different ways AI might generate gameplay or control game characters. They are useful signals, not a verified ranking of the industry’s biggest trends.
What are the biggest gaming trends in 2025?
There is no evidence here that kart racers, ninja games, and fighting AI were objectively the three largest trends across the industry. They are three high-profile examples from the year, and they represent different kinds of change: a major release tied to a new console, a franchise revival, and experiments in game development and character behavior.
For wider context, Unity’s 2025 report says there are more than 3 billion active players globally and reports over $184 billion in video-game gross revenue in 2024. Those are figures presented by Unity, not an independent ranking of the trends discussed here. Its survey results should be read as responses from studios, not as a census of every developer.
Why was Mario Kart World a notable 2025 release?
Mario Kart World launched June 5, 2025, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo describes a connected world in which races pass through different regions, alongside Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle, and Free Roam modes. The platform requirement is important: it is not an original Nintendo Switch game. Nintendo’s U.S. product listing specifies one to four players on a single system and online play for up to 24 players; it also lists a physical edition.

The release is a strong example of a familiar genre serving as a showcase for a new console generation. It does not, by itself, show that kart racers as a whole experienced a sales or player-count revival. Nintendo’s U.S. launch announcement paired the game with the June 5 console launch and listed a $79.99 suggested retail price at that time; that is historical launch pricing, not a current price. Nintendo’s launch announcement also identifies Joy-Con 2 steering wheels as optional accessories, not a requirement for play.
What did 2025 mean for Ninja Gaiden?
For ninja-themed games, the clearest signal was a franchise return rather than proof of a genre-wide boom. In a January 23, 2025 article, Xbox Wire reported that Team Ninja was celebrating its 30th anniversary and announced Ninja Gaiden 4, co-developed with PlatinumGames. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black also released that day.

- MULTIPLE RACING MODES: Awesome online and split-screen local multi-player for non-stop action the entire family will love.
The series is known for challenging action built around fast movement, swordplay, and ninjutsu. Team Ninja head and Ninja Gaiden 4 producer Fumihiko Yasuda said, “Fans have long been asking us for a new NINJA GAIDEN game.” The new entry’s protagonist was presented as a way to welcome new players while continuing the series. Those details establish an anniversary-year revival and remaster; they do not establish broader audience growth or a surge in ninja games.
How is AI being used in video games?
“AI in games” can mean at least three different things: a model that generates gameplay, an autonomous character that acts alongside or against the player, or tools developers use behind the scenes. These examples are at different stages of development, so a research demonstration should not be confused with a feature already available in a released game.

Generating gameplay: Microsoft Research’s Muse
Microsoft Research introduced Muse on February 19, 2025. Developed with Ninja Theory using the multiplayer game Bleeding Edge, Muse is a World and Human Action Model that can generate game visuals, controller actions, or both. Katja Hofmann, Partner Research Manager at Microsoft Research, described it this way: “The WHAM, which we’ve named ‘Muse,’ is a generative AI model of a video game that can generate game visuals, controller actions, or both.”
Microsoft Research released model weights and sample data with an executable demonstrator for research experimentation. This makes Muse a research resource for exploring gameplay generation and ideation, not evidence that players can use it as a consumer game or that it has shipped as a feature in Bleeding Edge. Microsoft Research’s Muse announcement explains the model and its intended experimentation.

Autonomous companions and adaptive enemies
NVIDIA describes ACE-powered characters that may serve as teammates: they can gather and share items, make suggestions, and engage enemies. The company also describes adaptive boss behavior for MIR5. In these cases, NVIDIA’s account combines partner announcements and vendor descriptions; it should not be read as confirmation that every capability is already broadly playable.
Wemade Next CEO Jung Soo Park said, “Together with NVIDIA, we have begun a new era of gaming with NVIDIA ACE autonomous game characters. MIR5’s AI bosses are a milestone moment in gaming, enabling unique boss encounters with every play session. We’re excited to see how this technology transforms games.” That is a partner’s characterization of the project, not independent evidence that every encounter will differ or that the feature is available across games. NVIDIA’s ACE article describes the announced examples and capabilities.

AI tools in development workflows
AI also appears in production workflows, separate from what players encounter inside a game. Unity’s 2025 report says 96% of the studios it surveyed were integrating AI tools into workflows, while fewer than half used AI in any one workflow. The report’s survey material cites Cint surveys of 300 respondents in 2023 and 300 in 2024. These figures describe those survey respondents, not all game studios, and do not mean AI has replaced every part of production. Unity also reports that 64% of surveyed developers worked on networked multiplayer or couch co-op, and that 88% said overall play times were rising; the latter is a respondent perception, not a universal measurement of player hours. Unity’s 2025 report provides the broader industry and survey context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you read these three signals?
| Example | What happened in 2025 | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart World | Released June 5 for Nintendo Switch 2 | A prominent kart-racing release tied to a new console generation; not proof of a genre-wide boom. |
| Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black | New entry announced and remaster released on January 23, during Team Ninja’s 30th anniversary year | A notable franchise revival; not a measure of the overall popularity of ninja games. |
| Muse and NVIDIA ACE examples | Research-model release and vendor-described partner character projects | Evidence of experimentation with generated gameplay and autonomous characters; not proof that all these features are broadly available in games. |
The evidence is not interchangeable: Nintendo’s release details establish a game and its platform; Xbox Wire reports a franchise announcement and release; Microsoft Research describes a research model; NVIDIA describes vendor and partner projects; Unity reports survey responses. Together, they make a useful tour of 2025’s visible signals without establishing a definitive industry ranking.
