What does the Grammy video game score category recognize?
The official category name is Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. The Academy defines it as recognizing excellence in “score soundtrack albums comprised predominantly of original scores created specifically for a video game or other interactive media.” It is therefore a score category, not a general award for any collection of songs associated with a game.

In its nominee FAQ, the Academy states that “Only the composers are the nominees” for this category. That distinguishes it from soundtrack compilation awards, which can have different nominee-credit rules.

The 2025 category recognized recordings released from September 16, 2023, through August 30, 2024, according to the Academy’s category page. These dates describe the eligibility window for this Grammy edition, not a recurring annual schedule.

For the 2025 season, the Academy also announced an eligibility qualification addressing released game content, including downloadable content (DLC) and seasonal expansions: for an otherwise eligible soundtrack entered on that basis, greater than 50% of its music had to derive from new episodes or new programming released during the Grammy eligibility year. The rule is specific to the 2025 season update; the available category results do not say that any particular nominee qualified through DLC or an expansion. The Academy describes the Grammy Awards as peer-determined: voting members determine winners, while first-round voting determines nominees. Its general Awards Process page says the Awards Department reviews entries for eligibility before genre-based screening committees check category placement.
