Microsoft also says alpha hardware will reach developers beginning in 2027. That is a developer milestone—not confirmation that a retail Xbox will launch in 2027.
The broader strategy is already visible. Microsoft is bringing Xbox and Windows closer together, working with AMD on next-generation hardware, and partnering with ASUS on Windows handhelds branded around Xbox. The result could be a more flexible Xbox ecosystem spanning consoles, PCs, handhelds, cloud gaming and OEM hardware.

However, the important details remain unannounced: Project Helix’s consumer launch date, price, specifications, operating-system behavior, storefront policy, disc support and complete backward-compatibility plan.
What Microsoft has officially announced
The clearest way to understand the next Xbox is to separate confirmed announcements from reporting and reasonable speculation.

June 2025: AMD partnership and a broader hardware strategy
On June 19, 2025, Microsoft announced a multi-year partnership with AMD covering custom silicon for next-generation Xbox hardware. The announcement described a broader portfolio spanning console, handheld, PC, cloud and accessories, rather than a future tied to one box.
Microsoft also said the Xbox experience would not be limited to a single device or store. That supports a multi-device strategy, but it does not by itself confirm that a future living-room Xbox will run an unrestricted Windows desktop or install every PC storefront.

On June 8, 2025, Microsoft and ASUS revealed the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. These are Windows 11 handheld PCs made by ASUS in collaboration with Xbox and AMD. They provide an Xbox-focused full-screen interface while retaining access to PC gaming features and multiple storefronts.
They are not conventional Xbox consoles. Their importance is strategic: they show that Microsoft is willing to extend the Xbox experience through partner-built hardware while continuing to develop its own first-party console.

March 2026: Project Helix
On March 11, 2026, Microsoft formally identified its next-generation first-party console project as Project Helix. Microsoft said the system is designed to play Xbox console games and PC games, and that alpha versions of the hardware would begin shipping to developers in 2027.

The official Project Helix announcement is the key source for the current state of the next Xbox. Microsoft’s Windows messaging also describes a closer relationship between Xbox and Windows across devices and screens.
That is the confirmed announcement. It does not include a retail launch date, final product name, price or consumer specification sheet.
Does 2027 mean a consumer Xbox launch?
No—not according to Microsoft’s public wording. The confirmed 2027 event is the delivery of developer alpha hardware. Developers use such hardware to build, test and optimize games before a product reaches consumers.
Developer hardware is materially different from:
- A public product reveal
- Retail preorders
- A consumer launch
- Final pricing
- Final specifications
- Confirmed availability in a particular country
Some reporting has associated the next-generation Xbox with a 2027 timeframe. For example, Bloomberg reported on the developer-hardware plan. But reports should not be rewritten as a guaranteed retail release date.

The accurate wording is: developer alpha hardware is planned for 2027, while Microsoft’s consumer launch window remains unannounced.
What “PC-style hybrid” actually means
“PC-style hybrid” is a useful description of the direction, provided it is not treated as a published specification. Microsoft has confirmed an Xbox designed around both console and PC games, but it has not said that Project Helix will simply be a standard Windows desktop in a console-shaped case.
What is confirmed or strongly supported
- Project Helix is designed to play Xbox console games and PC games.
- Microsoft is aligning the Xbox and Windows gaming experiences more closely.
- The Xbox ecosystem is expanding across consoles, PCs, handhelds, cloud gaming and accessories.
- Xbox Play Anywhere supports more than 1,500 games according to Microsoft’s March 2026 developer messaging. Supported games can carry purchases, saves and achievements between Xbox and Windows PC.
- Current Xbox-oriented Windows handhelds aggregate Xbox, Game Pass and other PC storefront libraries in a console-style interface.
What Microsoft has not confirmed
Microsoft has not publicly confirmed that Project Helix will:

- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Run the full Windows desktop
- Install arbitrary Windows applications
- Run every Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG or Battle.net game natively
- Replace the Xbox operating system with standard Windows
- Offer unrestricted access to every PC storefront
- Include a keyboard-and-mouse desktop mode
- Support every existing Xbox game
- Launch at any particular price, including a four-figure price
Some of those features are plausible interpretations of Microsoft’s Windows and handheld work. None should be presented as a confirmed Project Helix feature.
The compatibility question is more complicated than “Xbox plus PC”
When Microsoft says the system will play Xbox and PC games, that can involve several different technical and commercial paths:
| Access path | What it means | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Native Xbox compatibility | The console runs an Xbox version of a game. | The exact Project Helix backward-compatibility plan is unknown. |
| Xbox Play Anywhere | A supported purchase includes Xbox and Windows PC versions, with cross-device saves and achievements. | Support is title-specific; it does not cover every Xbox purchase. |
| Native PC gaming | A Windows-compatible PC game runs locally. | Performance, controller support, launchers and optimization vary by game. |
| Cloud gaming | A supported game streams from Microsoft’s servers. | Requires compatible service, region, device, game and network conditions. |
| Remote Play | A game streams from the player’s own Xbox console. | Requires an existing console and a suitable network connection. |
| Other PC storefronts | A Windows device can access stores such as Battle.net and other leading PC platforms. | Access on current Windows handhelds does not prove unrestricted storefront access on Project Helix. |
This distinction matters because a game appearing in an Xbox library does not automatically mean it can be installed locally on a Windows handheld. A console-only title may require cloud streaming or Remote Play, while Play Anywhere applies only to supported games.
How OEM Xbox devices fit the plan
Microsoft’s strategy has two connected layers.
First-party Xbox hardware
Project Helix is Microsoft’s own next-generation Xbox console project. Microsoft has linked its development to custom AMD silicon and continues to describe a first-party console rather than an abandonment of console hardware.
Partner-built Xbox devices
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are made by ASUS with Xbox and AMD. They run Windows 11 Home and boot into an Xbox-focused full-screen experience. Underneath that interface, they remain Windows gaming PCs rather than locked-down Xbox consoles.
The practical model is therefore closer to:
- Xbox as an account, software and services ecosystem
- Microsoft first-party hardware at the console end
- OEM hardware for additional form factors and price points
- Windows as the underlying PC platform on partner devices
- Cloud gaming and Remote Play for compatibility gaps
What the ROG Xbox Ally devices can do today
The current ASUS handhelds provide the clearest working example of Microsoft’s direction, although they should not be treated as a preview of every Project Helix specification.

Microsoft has not published a single list of internal reasons, but its announcements make the strategic logic clear.
A larger Xbox audience
If Xbox games, accounts and services work across consoles, PCs, handhelds and cloud devices, Xbox is less dependent on sales of one type of hardware. The company can reach players who prefer a living-room console, a gaming PC or a portable device.
More continuity between devices
Play Anywhere, cloud saves, Game Pass, cloud gaming and Remote Play let supported games follow the player. That does not make every title available everywhere, but it reduces the importance of a single device.

Closer console and PC development
A console designed to play PC games could reduce some of the separation between Xbox and Windows development. The exact technical requirements and certification process are not public, so the effect on developers remains uncertain.
More hardware variety
OEM partnerships allow Microsoft to support more form factors without manufacturing every handheld, laptop or mini-PC itself. That can create choice, but it may also produce differences in screens, batteries, cooling, storage and performance.
A stronger Windows gaming experience
Microsoft says it is bringing lessons from Xbox to Windows. The Xbox handheld interface is an early example of an attempt to make Windows gaming feel more focused and controller-friendly on smaller screens.
The likely trade-offs
- Flexibility versus simplicity: PC storefronts offer more choice but can bring extra launchers, accounts, updates and configuration work.
- Performance versus price: A premium AMD-based hybrid could be expensive, although Project Helix’s price has not been announced.
- Choice versus consistency: OEM hardware could expand the ecosystem while creating different performance tiers and user experiences.
- PC compatibility versus optimization: A game may run technically but lack proper controller support, readable menus or handheld tuning.
- Cross-generation support versus complexity: Supporting older Xbox software and PC games may require multiple execution layers or certification systems. Microsoft has not explained how it will work.
What remains unknown
These are the most important unanswered questions:
- When the retail console will launch
- Whether Project Helix is the final consumer name
- Price and performance tier
- CPU, GPU, memory and storage specifications
- Disc-drive availability
- Support for existing Xbox accessories
- Exact backward compatibility
- Whether physical Xbox games will work
- Whether the system uses a console-specific OS, Windows-based software or a hybrid architecture
- Whether users can install Steam or other stores directly
- Whether all PC games will be supported
- Which OEM products will follow the current handhelds
- Whether Microsoft will certify performance or compatibility tiers for OEM devices
- Whether “2027” applies only to developer hardware or also to commercial products
Reports have described the future Xbox as a high-end or PC-like system, but those reports do not replace Microsoft’s missing specifications. The current ROG Xbox Ally X price is a market signal, not evidence that Project Helix will cost $1,000 or more.
Should you buy an Xbox now or wait?
Waiting makes sense if you:
- Want the highest possible performance and can wait indefinitely for a confirmed consumer date.
- Want one future device that may bridge Xbox and PC gaming.
- Are comfortable with uncertain compatibility and potentially premium pricing.
- Do not urgently need a new console.
Buying current hardware makes sense if you:
- Want to play Xbox games now.
- Prefer a mature console interface and established current-generation support.
- Need physical media or a conventional living-room console.
- Do not need PC storefront access.
- Do not want to wait for an unpriced, unreleased product.
Do not sell a current Xbox solely because of Project Helix. Its retail schedule, backward compatibility and final feature set are not settled.
Likewise, the ROG Xbox Ally is not a direct replacement for an Xbox Series console or proof of what the next living-room Xbox will cost. It is a Windows handheld that demonstrates how Xbox services can sit above partner-built PC hardware.
The bottom line
Project Helix is real, and Microsoft’s next Xbox is officially being designed to bridge Xbox console games and PC games. The confirmed 2027 milestone is developer alpha hardware—not a guaranteed consumer launch.

The best current interpretation is that Microsoft is trying to make Xbox a device-spanning gaming platform while keeping a first-party console at its center. ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally handhelds show how OEM hardware can participate in that ecosystem today, but they do not answer the remaining questions about Project Helix’s price, operating system, storefront access or compatibility.
