The best co-op game on Steam depends on the group: Split Fiction is the standout two-player adventure, Deep Rock Galactic is the strongest repeatable four-player game, and Baldur’s Gate 3 is the deepest full-party RPG. This list covers Steam games whose listings advertise online, LAN, shared-screen, split-screen, or equivalent cooperative play. Availability and features were checked against the supplied Steam research on August 7, 2026.
Choose based on player count, session length, whether you want a story or an ongoing sandbox, and whether everyone is playing on the same screen or over the internet.

1. Split Fiction
Best for: a dedicated two-player story adventure.
Hazelight’s follow-up to It Takes Two is built specifically for two players. Its campaign constantly changes its challenges and play styles, making communication essential rather than optional. Steam lists online co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, and Remote Play Together.

The guest needs the Friend’s Pass installation, a persistent internet connection, and the relevant platform account. Online play also requires an EA Account linked to Steam. Friend’s Pass does not let two guests play without at least one owner of the full game.

2. It Takes Two
Best for: couples, close friends, and couch co-op.
It Takes Two remains one of Steam’s clearest recommendations for two people who want a structured adventure rather than an open-ended sandbox. Each section gives both players complementary abilities, so neither person is merely tagging along.
It supports online co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, and Remote Play Together. Hazelight’s Friend’s Pass lets one owner invite a second player for free, although online play currently requires an EA Account. This is strictly a two-player game: it has no four-player mode.
3. Portal 2
Best for: carefully designed two-player puzzles.
The cooperative campaign is a separate experience from Portal 2’s single-player story. Two players control different test subjects, solve chambers that require synchronized portal placement, and learn to communicate spatial ideas precisely.

Steam lists online co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, and Remote Play Together. After the main campaign, the level editor and Steam Workshop provide additional player-created puzzle content. Do not buy it expecting to simply replay the single-player campaign with a friend: co-op has its own characters, story, and test chambers.
4. Baldur’s Gate 3
Best for: a long-form RPG campaign with a full party.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest choice here if your group wants dozens of hours of party decisions, tactical combat, exploration, and role-playing. Up to four players can share a campaign, create characters, and make decisions that can send the party in unexpected directions.
Steam lists online co-op, LAN co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, split-screen support, and Remote Play Together. Larian also describes multiplayer as supporting up to four players, whether the group starts a new multiplayer journey or joins an existing single-player game.
Important: cross-play is not automatically the same as cross-save or universal support across every platform combination. Confirm the platforms involved before planning a shared campaign.
5. Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition
Best for: systemic tactical RPG co-op.
For groups that want more freedom to experiment, Divinity: Original Sin 2 remains an excellent alternative to Baldur’s Gate 3. Players can combine elemental effects, exploit the environment, pursue separate objectives, and approach quests in very different ways.
The Definitive Edition supports up to four players online or in split screen, with drop-in/drop-out co-op. Steam also lists Remote Play Together. Its freedom is a strength, but agree in advance how independently players may act: cooperative characters can make their own decisions and even pursue different goals.
6. Deep Rock Galactic
Best for: repeatable four-player PvE missions.
Deep Rock Galactic turns cooperative teamwork into the main attraction. Groups of up to four dwarves descend into procedurally generated, destructible caves, mine resources, complete objectives, and fight alien hordes.

Each of the four classes contributes different tools and strengths, so a varied team is generally more useful than four identical loadouts. The Steam listing advertises online co-op, not shared-screen co-op. Its mission structure makes it particularly good for groups that want regular sessions without committing to one enormous campaign.
7. Risk of Rain 2
Best for: fast, replayable co-op runs.
Risk of Rain 2 supports online co-op with up to three friends, for a maximum of four players. Every run remixes stages, enemies, items, and character builds, creating a constant tension between exploring for better loot and moving before the difficulty escalates too far.
Randomized items can create accidental competition within the team. Decide whether players claim items freely, rotate priority, or specialize builds—particularly when someone is learning the game.
8. Stardew Valley
Best for: low-pressure farming and a persistent shared world.

Players can share a farm, divide daily chores, explore, fish, build relationships, and gradually turn an inherited plot into a long-running shared home.
The farm belongs to the host save. Joining players should not assume they automatically receive an independent copy of that world, so choose a reliable host and keep backups of the save if the farm becomes a long-term project.
9. Valheim
Best for: open-world survival, exploration, and base building.
Valheim supports up to 10 players online. The group gathers resources, constructs settlements, sails between regions, explores a procedurally generated Norse-inspired world, and prepares for boss fights.
As of the supplied August 7, 2026 research, Steam still labeled Valheim Early Access and listed September 9, 2026 as its planned Early Access departure date. A planned date is not proof that version 1.0 has launched, so check the current Steam page if release status matters to your group.
10. Satisfactory
Best for: cooperative factory construction.
Satisfactory is ideal for players who enjoy turning a messy resource operation into a carefully engineered production network. Together, you gather materials, automate manufacturing, explore an alien planet, solve logistics problems, and expand from basic machines to complex factories.
Steam lists online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. It released on September 10, 2024; the older June 8, 2020 Early Access date remains visible on the store page as historical information, so it should not be treated as evidence that the current release is still merely an Early Access build.

The shared raft gives the group a visible project: every new station, floor, storage area, and sail changes how the team operates.
It supports online co-op. The host’s world is the central save, so joining players should not expect their progress to transfer independently to a separate personal world.
12. Don’t Starve Together
Best for: difficult survival and role specialization.
Don’t Starve Together is the standalone multiplayer version of Don’t Starve, not simply an optional multiplayer mode added to the original. Its harsh survival systems reward players who divide responsibilities, prepare for seasonal threats, and recover quickly from mistakes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

It is a good fit for groups that enjoy learning through failure, but less suitable if players want a forgiving drop-in experience.
13. Lethal Company
Best for: inexpensive, chaotic co-op horror.
Lethal Company sends up to four players to abandoned moons to collect scrap, meet profit quotas, purchase equipment, and survive hostile creatures. Its best moments come from imperfect information: one player explores, another watches a monitor, and everyone tries to return before the company’s deadline.
The Steam version remains in Early Access. The unmodified game supports up to four players, not 32. Larger groups generally require mods or unofficial configurations and should not be presented as standard Steam functionality.
14. Sons Of The Forest
Best for: multiplayer survival horror with building.

Sons Of The Forest combines cooperative exploration, shared equipment, base construction, underground expeditions, and survival combat against cannibals and mutated creatures. It works best when the group treats the island as a shared expedition rather than rushing through objectives.
Steam lists online co-op. This is a survival sandbox rather than a tightly paced linear campaign, so players can split up, progress at different speeds, or trigger story events out of sequence. Agree on where the group will build and how far players should advance alone.

15. 7 Days to Die
Best for: base defense and zombie survival.
7 Days to Die combines scavenging, crafting, construction, character progression, and periodic zombie hordes. The most satisfying group routine is usually a cycle of exploring for supplies, improving defenses, assigning base roles, and preparing for the next attack.
The current Steam listing supports online and LAN co-op, online and LAN PvP, and cross-platform multiplayer. Steam lists July 25, 2024 as its release date; older articles describing the current entry as an unreleased or permanently pre-release game are outdated.
16. Overcooked! 2
Best for: couch co-op and short, chaotic sessions.
Up to four players can cook together online or in shared/split screen. Kitchens change the rules with moving platforms, hazards, narrow routes, and increasingly demanding orders, turning simple task assignment into a fast coordination challenge.
Steam also lists Remote Play Together, which can deliver a local-style multiplayer session over the internet. Despite its bright presentation, this is not a relaxing cooking simulator: timing, communication, and staying calm matter more than individual skill.
17. Grounded
Best for: accessible survival crafting with a story campaign.
Grounded shrinks players into a dangerous backyard filled with insects, resource routes, combat encounters, and building opportunities. Cooperative groups can gather materials, construct a base, explore together, and progress through the story while learning how the environment works.
Steam advertises online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. Cross-platform play uses the game’s associated Microsoft/Xbox account systems, so Steam ownership alone does not remove the account requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.18. Terraria
Best for: 2D exploration, building, and combat.
Terraria offers an enormous loop of mining, crafting, construction, exploration, boss fights, equipment upgrades, and character progression in a procedurally generated 2D world. It can serve both as a relaxed building game and as a demanding combat adventure.
There is no conventional story campaign with a fixed sequence. New groups may need guidance because progression depends on exploration, equipment, NPC requirements, and discovering which boss or region to tackle next.
19. Sea of Thieves
Best for: a shared pirate sandbox.
Sea of Thieves gives a crew shared responsibility for sailing, navigation, treasure voyages, naval combat, and world events. A standard crew can operate one ship together, with each player taking a practical role during encounters.
It is not purely cooperative PvE. Other crews inhabit the wider world and may attack, steal from, or interfere with your group depending on the activity and server situation. Choose it for emergent stories and social sailing, not guaranteed peace.

20. Monster Hunter Rise
Best for: mission-based boss hunting and build variety.
Monster Hunter Rise supports online hunts for up to four players. The core loop is clear and rewarding: prepare equipment, hunt a monster, use its materials to craft stronger gear, and take on a more difficult target.
Story progression is not completely shared. Much of the game separates village and multiplayer progression, and some story content must be advanced individually. It is better suited to groups that want to hunt together than to players expecting one perfectly synchronized campaign.

21. Phasmophobia
Best for: short-form cooperative investigation horror.
In Phasmophobia, players investigate haunted locations, collect evidence, identify ghost types, and try to extract safely. Communication and observation are more important than shooting skill, making it a strong choice for a small group that wants tense sessions with room for mistakes and arguments over evidence.
Steam lists online co-op, and the game remains in Early Access. Its maps, equipment, systems, and content can change through updates, so treat its current feature set as subject to change.
How to choose the right Steam co-op game
- Two players and a story: choose Split Fiction or It Takes Two.
- Two players and puzzles: choose Portal 2.
- Three or four players and an RPG: choose Baldur’s Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin 2.
- Repeatable missions: choose Deep Rock Galactic or Risk of Rain 2.
- Shared-screen multiplayer: choose It Takes Two, Split Fiction, Portal 2, Stardew Valley, or Overcooked! 2.
- Long-term survival: choose Valheim, Raft, Grounded, 7 Days to Die, or Don’t Starve Together.
- Short horror sessions: choose Lethal Company or Phasmophobia.
- A sandbox rather than a campaign: choose Terraria, Sea of Thieves, or Satisfactory.
Steam co-op details that are easy to misunderstand
Remote Play Together is not native online multiplayer
Steam’s Remote Play Together streams a local multiplayer experience so friends can play over the internet. It is a Steam feature label, not a synonym for a game’s native online mode. A game can support both, but the setup, host requirements, latency, and controls may differ.

For It Takes Two and Split Fiction, one player must own the full game. The other player installs the free Friend’s Pass version and joins the owner. It is not a way for two people without an owner to play the full game.
Host saves matter in survival games
Stardew Valley and Raft center their multiplayer around the host’s world or save. Before starting a long-running group game, decide who will host and make a backup plan for when that person is unavailable.
Co-op does not always mean PvE-only
Sea of Thieves allows crews to cooperate but places them in a world where other players can interfere. Rust is an even clearer example of why the label can mislead: although Steam lists online co-op, it is fundamentally a persistent PvP survival sandbox rather than a conventional cooperative campaign.
