How much does it cost to run a mini PC 24/7 in Australia? It depends on the computer’s measured average power draw and the usage rate on your electricity plan. Estimate the local cost from those two inputs, then compare it with a current VPS quote for your chosen region, instance, data transfer and storage. There is no established universal winner: a wattage figure for a specific mini PC and a comparable current VPS bill are needed to say which costs less.
Calculate a mini PC’s 24/7 electricity cost
Measure the complete computer at the wall while it is doing the work you intend to run—especially encoding the resolution, frame rate and codec you plan to stream. An idle reading may not reflect sustained encoding power. For an ordinary year of continuous operation, use:
Annual electricity cost (AUD) = average wall draw (W) × 8,760 ÷ 1,000 × usage rate (AUD/kWh)
For a leap year, replace 8,760 with 8,784 hours. This estimates the electricity usage charge; it does not include fixed supply charges that you would pay regardless of the stream.

Illustrative costs at two AER reference rates
The following are arithmetic scenarios, not measurements of any mini PC. The rates are Australian Energy Regulator (AER) 2026–27 Default Market Offer examples; your own rate may differ.

Use your plan’s actual usage charge rather than treating these examples as an Australian average. The AER’s 2026–27 DMO took effect on 1 July 2026 and covers standing offers in NSW, South Australia and South East Queensland. It is a safety-net reference, not necessarily the cheapest market plan or a national tariff. Time-of-use plans need a weighted estimate
For Ausgrid NSW, the AER lists a 33.14 c/kWh residential flat usage rate, and time-of-use examples of 24.04 c/kWh from 9:00 pm to 3:00 pm and 60.20 c/kWh from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Its page also lists a 24.15 c/kWh overnight example for a different region. These are regulated standing-offer caps or examples, not guaranteed prices on your plan. Since a 24/7 stream runs through multiple tariff windows, multiply the power used in each window by that window’s charge and add the results. Is a mini PC cheaper than a VPS for 24/7 YouTube streaming?
Not enough information is established to declare either option cheaper across Australia. A fair comparison needs measured mini-PC power under the intended encoding workload and a dated VPS quote for the intended region and configuration, including data transfer, storage and other charges where applicable.

Do not count your whole home internet bill as a streaming cost unless the stream changes your plan or bandwidth charges. Conversely, do not assume VPS egress is always included or always charged: check the selected provider’s current terms. The comparison changes with the equipment, tariff, instance and service conditions you actually choose.
Confirm the mini PC can handle the stream
Low electricity use alone does not make a computer suitable for continuous streaming. Capacity depends on the encoding format and target resolution and frame rate. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended at 1080p30, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended at 1080p60. These are ingest settings, not proof that a particular mini PC or VPS can encode reliably. Check [YouTube’s encoder settings](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702?hl=en) and test the actual configuration.

Test the full workload before committing
- Use the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, audio and representative motion; encoding load can vary with content and settings.
- Preview the encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room and monitor stream health during a sustained test. - Measure wall draw during that same representative workload so the electricity estimate reflects the stream rather than idle consumption.
Account for YouTube’s requirements and upload reliability
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Review the current [encoder setup guidance](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2907883?hl=en-GB) before configuring the broadcast.
YouTube recommends allowing 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Test sustained upload under real conditions rather than relying on a plan’s advertised maximum; YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
