Use YouTube Studio’s audience-retention report to find candidate moments, then compare them with viewer counts and watch the replay around each timestamp. A top moment, spike, or dip is a clue—not a universal score that automatically identifies the “best” moment in a continuous stream.
What YouTube’s metrics can tell you
YouTube Studio provides video-level audience-retention key moments for streams, alongside average and peak concurrent viewers. These signals answer different questions: retention shows how viewing changes across the video, while concurrent viewers show how many people were watching at a given time. Neither alone explains why a moment performed as it did.
YouTube does not publish a single 24/7-specific formula for ranking the best moment. Treat the charts as a way to shortlist timestamps for editorial review, not as a finished verdict.
Find candidate timestamps in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Choose the ended livestream you want to review, then open its Analytics.
- In the video analytics view, look for Key moments for audience retention or the audience-retention report. Report availability can vary; check the specific stream rather than assuming every continuous broadcast will show an identical chart.
- Record the timestamps marked as top moments, spikes, and dips. Retention data typically takes 1–2 days to process, according to YouTube Help’s guidance on key moments, so an immediate post-stream snapshot may not be the completed report.
- Compare those timestamps with the stream’s average and peak concurrent viewers in video-level Analytics. For more detail, YouTube’s live-stream metrics guide explains real-time and post-stream reporting; real-time Live Control Room figures are estimates and should not be treated as identical to processed Analytics data.
- Open the replay and watch the surrounding segment. Note what was happening, whether the transition helped or interrupted attention, and whether a replay spike appears to reflect a compelling moment or confusion. This review is an editorial method, not a YouTube-prescribed scoring formula.
Interpret top moments, spikes, and dips

These labels identify patterns, not causes. A chart cannot tell you by itself whether a spike came from an exciting gameplay reveal, a confusing explanation, or another event in the stream.

Use retention and concurrent viewers together
For a practical shortlist, compare four kinds of evidence without treating them as interchangeable:
- Attention held: a top moment or a relatively stable retention segment.
- Repeat viewing: a spike or elevated audienceWatchRatio, which can reflect rewinding and rewatching rather than additional unique viewers.
- Audience size: changes in concurrent viewers around the same point.
- Context: what the replay actually shows before, during, and after the timestamp.
A retention spike alongside a rise in concurrent viewers may make a moment worth investigating, but it does not prove that one caused the other. A dip paired with a concurrent-viewer decline is likewise a prompt to inspect the segment, not a diagnosis.

Use the Analytics API for custom analysis
If Studio’s charts are not enough, YouTube’s Analytics API documents audience-retention measures including audienceWatchRatio, relativeRetentionPerformance, startedWatching, and stoppedWatching. The audience-retention report requires a single video ID. Its values are indexed by elapsed video time; the separate concurrent-viewer report describes livestream positions that generally represent minutes. Turn a shortlist into useful programming decisions
- Keep a timestamp, its metric signal, and a brief description of what the replay shows.
- Review enough before and after each timestamp to understand the setup and outcome; do not judge a moment from the chart marker alone.
- Label the likely lesson cautiously: for example, “clear payoff held attention” or “transition may have lost viewers.” Separate what the replay shows from what you infer.
- Look for patterns across several candidate segments before changing a recurring format. One spike or dip is not proof that a format consistently works or fails.
- Use the strongest supported pattern to plan an edit, highlight, or future segment, then assess the next stream’s data on its own terms.
