Gengar ranked first among the original 151 Pokémon in The Pokémon Company’s 2020 Pokémon of the Year Kanto results, with 60,214 votes. Bulbasaur placed second with 56,015, followed by Pikachu and Eevee. Here are the top 25, in the order and with the vote totals published for that regional category.
How this ranking works
This is a ranking of Pokémon first discovered in Kanto, based on The Pokémon Company’s 2020 Pokémon of the Year results. The poll grouped eligible Pokémon by region, so these places compare Kanto Pokémon with one another; they are not a head-to-head ranking of every Pokémon species. The list reflects votes in that poll, not sales, game usage, or a definitive view of fans today. The Pokémon Company’s official results provide the Kanto ranks and vote totals below.

Why other favorite-Pokémon lists look different
A newer poll asked about Generation I directly
Nintendo Life asked readers, “Which is your favourite Kanto Pokémon (Gen 1)?” Respondents could choose one Pokémon from the original 151. Its 2026 poll page reports 5,645 responses and rounded percentages: Charizard leads at 7%, followed by Gengar at 6% and Bulbasaur at 5%. Because the percentages are rounded, they do not establish exact vote totals or a precise order among results displayed with the same percentage. This reader poll differs in date, audience, and reporting from the 2020 regional vote. See Nintendo Life’s poll and results.
The 2020 overall winners were not the Kanto ranking
The Pokémon Company also published an overall result across participating regional categories. Greninja led that overall ranking with 140,559 votes, followed by Lucario with 102,259, Mimikyu with 99,077, Charizard with 93,968, and Umbreon with 67,062. Those totals belong to the overall ranking, not the Kanto category, and should not be inserted into the table above. Bulbapedia’s poll overview summarizes the regional categories and voting method.

Survey design changes what “popular” means
A separate all-time favorite survey discussed in a 2020 Journal of Geek Studies paper placed Charizard, Gengar, Arcanine, and Bulbasaur in its first four spots. The authors consider how factors such as generation, exposure, nostalgia, and familiarity with starter Pokémon may shape responses. That survey is useful context, not a correction to The Pokémon Company’s published Kanto totals. When comparing rankings, check the poll date, eligible Pokémon, audience, voting rules, and whether the results give exact votes or rounded percentages.
