2K Teases a 2027 College Basketball Experience; EA’s Plans Remain Unclear

2K has teased a college basketball experience for February 2027. Whether it is standalone or tied to NBA 2K27 remains unclear, while EA’s reported proposal has not become a confirmed release.

2K is the only publisher in the available reporting to have publicly described a college basketball project: in September 2025, it said it was working on an experience featuring more than 100 programs. An August 19, 2026 report said 2K teased it for February 2027, but did not establish whether it will be a standalone game or content for NBA 2K27. EA explored a broad college basketball proposal, but no EA release has been announced.

What did the original report say?

In December 2024, theScore summarized Mike Straw’s report that sources said EA Sports and Take-Two, 2K’s parent company, had continued internal conversations about a college basketball game. Straw said he did not know how far along the discussions were. That report described talks, not two games confirmed to be in development.

In June 2025, both publishers made public remarks that pointed to renewed interest. EA posted, “Bring the Madness. Let’s run it back.” 2K told the Associated Press: “2K is the undisputed home of basketball gaming. We have a strong history with college hoops and are exploring exciting new ways to bring athletes and schools to life. Class is in session.” Those hints did not specify a launch date or product format.

What has EA proposed, and what has 2K said it is making?

Publisher What the reporting establishes What remains unresolved
EA Sports Sports Business Journal reported on August 28, 2025, that the Collegiate Licensing Company selected EA’s proposal to put forward to schools. EA’s envisioned standalone game covered every Division I men’s and women’s team. EA vice president of business development Sean O’Brien described the goal as “a full, standalone experience that captures everything that makes the sport so special.” EA’s desire for exclusivity encountered a snag as schools considered separate agreements with 2K. The report does not establish that EA secured all the licenses it sought, that its proposal became a game in development, or that EA has announced a release.
2K In September 2025, 2K publicly confirmed it was working on a college basketball “experience” and said it would feature more than 100 programs. In August 2026, Operation Sports reported a teaser reading “Back on Campus, February 2027.” The 100-plus figure is 2K’s announced scope, not a verified final launch roster. The teaser did not settle whether the experience will be standalone or integrated into NBA 2K27.

These are different kinds of evidence: EA’s reported proposal and licensing negotiations are not the same as a product announcement, while 2K has publicly described a project and later teased a date. Neither set of reporting establishes the final content or commercial format.

When is the college basketball game coming out?

The latest dated report here, from Operation Sports on August 19, 2026, says 2K teased a February 2027 college basketball experience. That is a reported teaser, not a complete release announcement: the cited coverage does not confirm a specific day, platforms, price, or which product will provide access.

Operation Sports connected the teaser to NBA 2K27 coverage, but said it was still unclear whether the college content would be a standalone game or an NBA 2K27 add-on. There is no confirmation in the cited reporting that buying NBA 2K27 includes or unlocks the college experience. Treat those as separate questions until 2K announces the format and access terms.

What can players expect from the roster and features?

EA’s proposal was described as covering every Division I men’s and women’s team. That was the scope of a proposal put forward to schools, not confirmation of a completed license or released roster. 2K said its experience would feature more than 100 programs; the final lineup has not been established in the reporting.

The cited reports do not confirm platforms, price, game modes, individual athletes, or whether the 2K experience will be standalone. Insider Gaming also reported in July 2025 on plans for a standalone 2K college basketball game, while noting details were unconfirmed. That report is not enough to resolve the later question raised by the February 2027 teaser.
