The method depends on your edition: press F3 in Minecraft: Java Edition, enable Show Coordinates in Bedrock’s world settings, or use the Bedrock command /gamerule showcoordinates true. Coordinates show your exact X, Y, and Z position.
What Minecraft coordinates mean
Minecraft uses three axes to identify your location:
- X: east and west
- Y: vertical height
- Z: north and south
The coordinate display updates as you move. The method you use depends on whether you are playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
1. Press F3 in Java Edition
In Minecraft: Java Edition, press F3 to open the Debug Screen. Your X, Y, and Z coordinates appear on the left side of the overlay. See the relevant Java shortcut details at CraftMC.
#1 Best Overall
- Load a Java Edition world.
- Press F3.
- Read the X, Y, and Z values in the debug information on the left.
On some laptops, you must press Fn+F3 because the function keys are assigned to hardware controls. If nothing happens, another application or keyboard utility may be capturing the key.
Do not confuse the other F3 shortcuts with the coordinate display: F3+B toggles entity hitboxes, while F3+G shows chunk borders. F3 is a Java Edition feature; pressing it in standard Bedrock gameplay does not open Java’s coordinate overlay.

2. Turn on Show Coordinates in Bedrock Edition
For most Bedrock players, the simplest method is the world setting. It works on Bedrock-supported devices including Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
For an existing world
- Select Play.
- Find the world and select its pencil-shaped Edit button.
- Open Game.
- Turn Show Coordinates on.
- Load the world.
Your coordinates appear near the upper-left as a Position readout containing X, Y, and Z. Depending on the platform and interface layout, you may also find the control after entering the world through Settings → Game → Show Coordinates. The exact menu location can vary between versions and devices. The Bedrock setup is documented in this Bedrock coordinates guide.

Turning on Show Coordinates through the world setting is not the same as enabling cheats and does not, by itself, disable Bedrock achievements. Cheats and commands can have separate achievement consequences.
On a Realm or server, you may need to be the owner or have operator authorization to change the setting. If coordinates are enabled but seem missing, check the upper-left corner for TV overscan, interface scaling, or other HUD elements covering the readout.

3. Use the Bedrock gamerule
Bedrock can also display coordinates through a gamerule. Open the world’s chat and enter:
/gamerule showcoordinates true
- Open your Bedrock world.
- Open chat.
- Type the command exactly as shown.
- Press Enter, Send, or your controller’s confirm button.
To hide the display again, use:
/gamerule showcoordinates false
This command may require cheats, operator permission, or authorization on a server or Realm. If preserving achievements matters, use the Bedrock world-setting method instead. showcoordinates is a Bedrock gamerule and is not a replacement for Java’s F3 Debug Screen.

Copy coordinates in Bedrock
Bedrock also includes a separate coordinate-copy feature. To enable it, open Settings → Creator → Enable Copy Coordinate UI, as described in Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation.
On a keyboard:
- Ctrl+Alt+C copies your current position.
- Ctrl+Alt+X copies the coordinates of the block under your cursor or crosshair.
Bedrock confirms the action with either “Copied current position to clipboard” or “Copied facing position to clipboard.” The copied coordinates are inserted without commas and can be pasted outside Minecraft with Ctrl+V.
With a controller or touch interface, open the chat menu, choose Local or Cursor from the drop-down at the top, and press the copy button. Local means your current location; Cursor means the targeted block’s location.
Which method should you use?
| Edition | Best method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Java | Press F3 | Some laptops require Fn+F3. |
| Bedrock | Enable Show Coordinates | Menu labels and locations can vary by platform. |
| Bedrock with permissions | Use /gamerule showcoordinates true |
May require cheats or operator authorization. |
What does not show exact coordinates?
Maps and locator maps do not provide the standard exact X/Y/Z readout. A compass points toward world spawn or a lodestone; it does not display your current coordinates.
