For this guide, “low level” means character levels 1–4, with a separate note where an item tends to matter more at levels 5–10. The list draws on 2014 and 2024 D&D 5e material; item wording and availability can differ between those rules versions and sourcebooks, so check the version your table is using. These are recommendations for different campaigns—not an official ranking or a required starter loadout.
Magic items are optional advantages, not prerequisites: the 2024 Basic Rules say characters and monsters are built to face each other without them. Rarity is only a rough guide to relative power, so an item’s actual effect and fit for your party matter more than its label. 2024 Basic Rules: Magic Items
How to choose a magic item for a low-level party
At levels 1–4, a versatile utility item can influence more sessions than a strong combat bonus. Consider whether the item solves a recurring problem, whether the whole party can use it, and whether its effect is unlimited, charged, or consumed. A niche item can be a great reward when its specialty matches the campaign; otherwise, it may sit unused.
The 2024 Basic Rules’ award table is guidance for a party over the indicated level band, not a promise that every character receives a set number of items. It suggests 6 common, 4 uncommon, and 1 rare item for levels 1–4; for levels 5–10, it suggests 10 common, 17 uncommon, 6 rare, and 1 very rare item. The rise in the later band helps explain why some items are better saved for characters who have more resources and options. 2024 Basic Rules: Magic Items

For 2014 campaigns, attunement is a meaningful trade-off: a character can be attuned to no more than three items at once, and an item that requires attunement provides no magical properties until attunement is complete. 2014 Basic Rules: Magic Items
Everyday utility and travel
1. Bag of Holding
Best for: Parties accumulating gear, treasure, or awkward loot. The 2014 Basic Rules list it as uncommon. Its value is practical rather than combat-focused, making it a strong shared reward when carrying capacity and logistics come up often. 2014 Basic Rules: Magic Items
2. Boots of Striding and Springing
Best for: Characters who need to cover ground or negotiate difficult terrain. Listed as uncommon in the 2014 Basic Rules, these boots can make mobility a defining strength without simply adding damage. 2014 Basic Rules: Magic Items
3. Gloves of Swimming and Climbing
Best for: Exploration-heavy adventures with recurring cliffs, towers, or water crossings. They are uncommon and require attunement in the 2014 Basic Rules, so their value depends on how often those obstacles appear. 2014 Basic Rules: Magic Items
4. Cloak of Billowing
Best for: A character who wants a memorable entrance or a bit of magical theatricality. Its appeal is role-play and personality rather than solving combat problems. Verify its sourcebook and rules version before awarding it.
5. Immovable Rod
Best for: Players who enjoy creative solutions. A fixed point in midair can inspire clever plans involving climbing, barriers, or positioning, but the table should use the item’s exact rules text when a plan depends on it. Confirm the item’s source and version before play.
6. Rope of Climbing
Best for: Groups that regularly explore vertical spaces. It can turn a difficult ascent into a manageable team problem; it is less valuable in a campaign that rarely leaves roads, rooms, and flat ground. Confirm its precise rules in the book used by the campaign.

Defense and recovery
7. +1 armor
Best for: A character who is often targeted and can wear the armor type. The 2014 Basic Rules include +1 armor, but its rarity depends on the armor entry; check the exact piece rather than treating every version as the same award. A defensive bonus is especially noticeable at low levels, so consider the campaign’s encounter difficulty before giving it out. 2014 Basic Rules: Magic Items

8. +1 shield
Best for: A shield user who is expected to hold a frontline position. Its defensive value is concentrated in characters who can use a shield, and a sizable early defense increase can alter how threatening encounters feel. Check the relevant rules version and item source for its exact availability and rarity.
9. Cloak of Protection
Best for: A character who benefits from a broad defensive boost rather than a situational trick. Check the edition’s item entry for its rarity and attunement requirement, then weigh that slot against other items the wearer wants to use.
10. Periapt of Wound Closure
Best for: A character whose survival and recovery are frequent concerns. It is most relevant in games where healing and recovery are under pressure; verify its exact effect and attunement requirement in the selected rules version.
11. Potion of Healing
Best for: Nearly any party that wants a consumable emergency recovery option. Unlike a permanent item, a potion is spent when used, so it can help a character without permanently changing their capabilities. The 2024 Basic Rules use a Potion of Healing as an example of a common magic item. 2024 Basic Rules: Magic Items

12. Low-level spell scroll
Best for: A party that needs a one-time answer to a particular challenge. A scroll can offer access to a spell effect without adding a permanent tool, but spell and class rules affect who can use it. Match the scroll to the group’s capabilities and confirm the applicable rules.
Combat options
13. +1 weapon
Best for: A weapon user who will make frequent attacks. In the 2014 Basic Rules, a +1 weapon adds +1 to attack and damage rolls. Do not assume every magic weapon does this: the Sage Advice Compendium clarifies that a weapon grants those bonuses only when its description says so. A magic weapon and a +1 weapon are not interchangeable terms. 2014 Basic Rules: Magic Items Sage Advice Compendium

14. Weapon of Warning
Best for: A group in a campaign where ambushes are common. Its value depends heavily on how often surprise and initiative matter at the table, so confirm its rarity, attunement, and exact effect in the chosen sourcebook.
15. Javelin of Lightning
Best for: A character who would enjoy a dramatic ranged option. Its limited-use attack can add a memorable moment, but it is not a repeatable replacement for the character’s usual weapon. Check the exact item text and rarity before awarding it.
16. Wand of Magic Missiles
Best for: A character who wants a charged magical attack option. Charges make it a resource to manage rather than an unlimited source of extra damage; assess whether that extra offensive capacity suits the challenge level of a low-level campaign.
17. Moon-Touched Sword
Best for: A character who wants a magical weapon with a useful light source. It offers flavor and practical illumination without implying a numeric attack bonus; check the sourcebook and rules text your campaign uses.
18. Sentinel Shield
Best for: A shield user in a game where spotting danger is as important as standing firm in a fight. Its awareness benefit can matter outside combat, too. Confirm the source and rarity for the rules version in play.
Class and build support
19. Gauntlets of Ogre Power
Best for: A character whose plans depend on Strength but whose natural score is low. They are uncommon and require attunement in the 2014 Basic Rules. Because they can substantially change what a character can do, offer them when that transformation fits the player’s concept and the campaign. 2014 Basic Rules: Magic Items
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors20. Amulet of Health
Best for: A character who would benefit from greater durability. In the 2014 Basic Rules, this uncommon, attunement-required item sets Constitution to 19. That is a consequential build change, not merely a small convenience, so consider whether it suits the character and campaign. 2014 Basic Rules: Magic Items

21. Wand of the War Mage +1
Best for: A spellcaster who makes spell attacks. Its benefit is narrower than a general-purpose item, so it is most satisfying when the character regularly uses the kind of attack it supports. Confirm the edition’s wording, rarity, and attunement requirements.
22. Rod of the Pact Keeper +1
Best for: A warlock whose build matches the item’s support. This is a class-specific reward, not a broadly useful party item; verify its availability and mechanics in the sourcebook and rules version your group uses.
23. Bracers of Archery
Best for: An archer who uses the weapons they support. Their narrow compatibility can make them a satisfying tailored reward, but less useful if the wearer changes combat style. Check exact rules and attunement before awarding them.

24. Headband of Intellect
Best for: A character whose role or concept benefits from a major change in Intelligence. It can alter a build substantially; discuss the effect with the player and confirm the item’s rules before making it a low-level reward.

25. Hat of Disguise
Best for: Intrigue, infiltration, and campaigns where identity matters. It can be powerful when disguises unlock access or avert conflict, so check the spell effect, duration, and item wording in the rules version being used.
26. Eyes of the Eagle
Best for: A scout or lookout in a game with long sightlines and distant details to notice. Its usefulness depends on how often the DM presents visual scouting opportunities; verify rarity and attunement in the chosen rules.
27. Sending Stones
Best for: A party that splits up or needs to coordinate at a distance. Their value rises with campaign scale and separation between characters, so they may be less compelling in a tightly grouped dungeon crawl. Confirm exact item text and source.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.

28. Driftglobe
Best for: Characters who need portable illumination and flexible light. It can be more than a torch substitute when its full rules apply, but check the chosen edition and sourcebook before relying on a specific use.
29. Eversmoking Bottle
Best for: Escape plans, concealment, and encounters where blocking sight is valuable. Smoke can interfere with allies as readily as enemies, so the party should think through positioning before using it. Confirm the exact area and duration from the item entry.
30. Lantern of Revealing
Best for: A campaign featuring invisible creatures or effects. Its specialty is powerful when the target appears regularly and much less useful otherwise; verify the item’s precise scope before treating it as a universal answer to invisibility.
What magic items should I give a level 1 party?
Start with one or more rewards that improve the party’s options without making a single character’s power spike the whole focus. A Bag of Holding, a Potion of Healing, a light or travel utility item, or a low-level scroll tailored to the party’s spell access can be easier to fit than a large permanent combat bonus. A character-specific item is more likely to feel rewarding when it supports the player’s chosen role rather than replacing it.

The official level-band table is a party-level guideline, not an individual entitlement. 2024 Basic Rules: Magic Items
Are uncommon magic items too powerful at low levels?
Not automatically. Uncommon is a rough rarity category, not a guarantee that two items will have equal impact or suit the same character. A utility item that solves a recurring travel problem may barely affect combat, while an item that raises a key score or improves defense can change a low-level character’s capabilities more directly. Judge the individual effect, frequency of use, and campaign needs rather than the rarity label alone.
Which magic items don’t require attunement?
Attunement is listed in an item’s rules text; do not infer it from the item’s name, rarity, or usefulness. The 2014 Basic Rules specifically identify the Gauntlets of Ogre Power, Gloves of Swimming and Climbing, and Amulet of Health above as attunement-required. Check the full entry for any other item and use the rulebook edition your campaign follows. Under the 2014 rules, characters can be attuned to at most three items at once, making a powerful attuned item compete with other choices. 2014 Basic Rules: Magic Items
Use the item’s actual rules, not its reputation
Some entries above are anchors in the free 2014 Basic Rules; others are candidates from additional sources and must be checked against the specific book and rules version at your table. The rules determine what an item does, while the DM decides what fits the campaign. As the 2014 Sage Advice Compendium puts it, “The DM always has the final say on rules questions.” Sage Advice Compendium
