30 FPS vs. 60 FPS: Which Frame Rate Is Best for Streaming?

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose 60 fps when smooth motion matters and your encoder, computer, upload connection, resolution, and platform bitrate can sustain it. Choose 30 fps when 60 fps causes rendering or encoding trouble, or when you need to work within tighter performance or bitrate limits. A stable 30-fps stream is better than a 60-fps stream that drops frames.

What changes between 30 fps and 60 fps?

Frame rate is how many video frames your stream sends each second. At the same resolution and under similar conditions, 60 fps sends twice as many frames as 30 fps, which can make fast movement look smoother. That additional work can also make streaming more demanding on the system. Frame rate is not a quality setting in isolation: resolution, bitrate, codec, encoder, scene complexity, and platform all affect the result.

There is no universal visual-quality formula or controlled comparison establishing that one rate is best for every stream. The practical choice depends on whether smoother motion is worth the added encoding and rendering load for your content and setup.

When should you use each frame rate?

Choose 60 fps when motion is the priority

For games with rapid camera movement, action, or other fast motion, 60 fps is the more relevant option if your full setup can sustain it. OBS warns that “60-fps streaming can be very taxing on your system compared to 30-fps.” Treat that as a reason to test your actual settings, not as a claim that every computer will struggle.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose 30 fps when stability matters more

Thirty fps reduces the number of frames the software needs to render and encode. It can be the better choice if 60 fps causes encoder overload, rendering lag, or dropped frames, or if your available bitrate is better suited to a lower frame rate. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance is direct: “If 60 fps is not working for you, try dropping it to 30”.

Content with less fast motion may not benefit as much from the extra smoothness. Regardless of content, prioritize a stable stream over a higher frame rate that your setup cannot maintain.

Bitrate examples from Twitch and YouTube

Bitrate recommendations depend on platform, resolution, frame rate, and sometimes codec. The official examples below illustrate why you should check guidance for your target configuration rather than treating one number as universal. Twitch labels its figures as recommendations; its 6,000 kbps example is not a universal technical maximum. YouTube’s ranges below are specifically for H.264.

Platform and format Published bitrate guidance
Twitch, 1080p60 6,000 kbps (Broadcasting Guidelines, accessed 2026)
Twitch, 1080p30 4,500 kbps (Broadcasting Guidelines, accessed 2026)
Twitch, 720p60 4,500 kbps (Broadcasting Guidelines, accessed 2026)
Twitch, 720p30 3,000 kbps (Broadcasting Guidelines, accessed 2026)
YouTube Live, H.264, 1080p60 6–17 Mbps (live encoder settings, accessed 2026)
YouTube Live, H.264, 1080p30 5–14 Mbps (live encoder settings, accessed 2026)
YouTube Live, H.264, 720p60 3–8 Mbps (live encoder settings, accessed 2026)
YouTube Live, H.264, 720p30 3–8 Mbps (live encoder settings, accessed 2026)

For current recommendations, consult Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines and YouTube’s live encoder settings. Platform guidance can change. YouTube’s listed live encoding supports up to 60 fps.

How to choose and test your stream settings

  1. Start with the content and output resolution. Decide whether smooth motion is important for what you stream, then choose the resolution you intend to send. Compare frame rates at the same resolution so you are not changing multiple variables without noticing.
  2. Check the target platform’s bitrate guidance. Use the recommendations for your resolution, frame rate, and codec. Make sure your available upload capacity can sustain the planned bitrate; platform recommendations do not guarantee that every connection can.
  3. Set the output frame rate in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Video and set Common FPS Values to the rate you want, such as 30 or 60. Confirm your output resolution and encoder settings as well. OBS recommends using the frame rate you want to output and testing the planned settings on the actual system.
  4. Run a realistic test. Use the game or scene complexity you expect during a real stream. Watch for dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoder overload; a simple static scene may not reveal problems that appear during gameplay.
  5. Reduce settings if the stream is unstable. If 60 fps is not working reliably, switch to 30 fps and test again. If needed, OBS also identifies lowering resolution or simplifying scenes as troubleshooting levers. Change one setting at a time so you can see what resolves the issue.

What affects performance beyond frame rate?

System requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Higher frame rates can increase rendering and encoding work. Hardware encoding can move some work from the CPU to a specialized component in a GPU, but that does not establish that an upgrade is necessary; test your existing system first.

Bitrate and frame rate also interact with the viewing experience. A platform’s bitrate guidance is specific to combinations of settings, not proof that 60 fps always looks better at any bitrate. Keep resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and codec together when assessing quality and stability.

Viewer quality options depend on the platform

Transcoding can give viewers alternate quality options, but availability is not the same everywhere. OBS describes YouTube as transcoding all streams, while Twitch availability is tiered and can depend on availability. Do not assume every Twitch viewer can select a lower-quality version of your stream.

Troubleshooting 60-fps streaming

  • Dropped frames or unstable delivery: Check whether your upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate. Twitch advises favoring stable streaming over settings that cause dropped frames or push the connection to its limits. Lowering bitrate or resolution may help; retest after each change.
  • Encoder overload: Reduce the output frame rate to 30 fps and test again. If the problem remains, reduce resolution or simplify demanding scenes.
  • Rendering lag during complex gameplay or scenes: Reduce scene complexity or output resolution, then test under the same realistic workload. Do not judge performance only from an idle scene.
  • The stream looks less smooth than expected: Verify the output frame rate in OBS and confirm that the platform and stream are receiving the intended settings. Check the platform’s current guidance for the resolution, frame rate, and codec combination you use.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded video rather than a live camera or gameplay broadcast, StreamNeo can keep it running without a home computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
