YouTube lists minimum H.264 video bitrates of 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60, but those minimums are not a promise of stable performance. Choose the frame rate your computer and connection can sustain, then test with representative movement and audio before going live.
Recommended OBS settings for 1080p YouTube Live
These figures are YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026. The bitrate values below apply to H.264; YouTube publishes separate bitrate guidance for H.265/HEVC and AV1, so do not transfer the H.264 numbers to those codecs. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
| Setting | 1080p30 | 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920×1080 | 1920×1080 |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | 60 fps |
| H.264 video bitrate | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum | 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum |
| Rate control | CBR | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps and lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate. For SDR video, its guidance specifies Rec. 709 color, square pixels, progressive scan, and 8-bit depth. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery.
Choose 30 fps or 60 fps
Use the rate that fits the content and the capacity of your system and connection; 60 fps is not automatically better for every broadcast. Faster motion, such as gameplay with rapid camera movement, can benefit from 60 fps if OBS can encode it consistently and your upload connection can carry the stream. A talk, presentation, or less demanding game may work well at 30 fps, which has a lower H.264 bitrate recommendation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose 1080p30 when you need a lighter encoding and network load or the content has relatively little fast motion.
- Choose 1080p60 when smooth motion matters and your computer and connection can sustain the higher load.
YouTube’s bitrate recommendation is an encoder setting, not an upload-speed guarantee. Its guidance advises checking your connection and selecting quality that yields a reliable stream. If the recommended rate is unstable, reduce frame rate or output resolution and test again rather than assuming a particular bitrate will work on every network.
Set up OBS and test before the broadcast
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow the prompts. OBS says the wizard considers what you want to do, your computer hardware, and network conditions. Treat its result as a starting point, not a substitute for a test. OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Set the stream output to 1920×1080. In Settings → Video, configure the output resolution for 1920×1080 and set the frame rate to 30 or 60 fps according to your choice. Fit your canvas and sources to the intended layout; workflows differ depending on source dimensions.
- Set the encoder and output values. In Settings → Output, use the H.264 encoder available to your system, set rate control to CBR, enter the matching H.264 bitrate from the table, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Encoder names and available options depend on the software and hardware installed.
- Check audio input and output. Open Settings → Audio and confirm the intended microphone and desktop-audio devices. Speak or play audio and watch the Audio Mixer meters. OBS’s quick-start guide says desktop audio and microphone are captured by default, but recommends selecting devices manually if the meters do not move or the wrong device appears. Set stereo audio to AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz where those options are available.
- Connect OBS to YouTube securely. Set the YouTube stream destination in OBS and use RTMPS where available. A stream key is a credential that directs the encoder feed to your stream; do not publish it or share it with others. YouTube’s stream key guidance.
- Run a short representative test. Record or stream a few minutes before the event. Include movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube advises testing before the live stream and monitoring health during it; OBS also recommends a preflight test in its Quick Start Guide. If the test is unstable, adjust frame rate or resolution and test again.
What viewers receive and what the settings do not guarantee
YouTube transcodes live streams, including the source feed, so viewers can receive a range of playback formats. A consistent keyframe interval helps the quality selector transition smoothly between playback options. This does not remove the need to configure and test the outgoing stream correctly. OBS’s setup instructions are general guidance; the Quick Start Guide cited here is dated 2021, and exact labels or available encoder choices may differ by OBS release and computer. YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations can also change, so consult the current table if you select H.265/HEVC or AV1 rather than H.264.
Common problems and what to check
- Stream drops or becomes unstable: Run a speed test and check YouTube stream health. Confirm the bitrate matches the selected frame rate and codec. If it cannot be sustained reliably, lower the frame rate or resolution and repeat the test.
- Audio is missing: Check the Audio Mixer meters, then verify the selected devices in Settings → Audio. Select the intended inputs manually if necessary.
- Motion looks less smooth than expected: Verify that the output frame rate is the one you intended. Use 60 fps only if the system can encode it consistently and the connection can sustain its corresponding bitrate recommendation.
- Viewers cannot switch quality options smoothly: Confirm the keyframe interval is consistent and set to 2 seconds, not above YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
- External console video is absent: A capture card can be used as a video-capture source in OBS for a console or other external video source. It is optional and does not set or improve the stream’s bitrate or keyframe interval. OBS lists video-capture sources in its setup guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos around the clock rather than broadcasting a live OBS scene, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams uploads as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded-video playback to YouTube, not a camera-based live broadcast. Start your free StreamNeo day.
