Volition closed in 2023, 30 years after it began as Parallax Software and made its name with Descent. The studio announced its closure on September 1; contemporaneous reporting said it took effect immediately the day before. Embracer Group placed the shutdown amid a broad restructuring, but neither the company’s public plan nor the available reporting establishes one definitive studio-specific reason.
What happened to Volition?
Volition announced on September 1, 2023 that it had closed after 30 years. “After 30 years Volition has closed, and we wanted to say a few final words,” the studio wrote in its farewell statement, thanking former colleagues and its community. Read Volition’s farewell statement.

Ars Technica reported the previous day that the closure was effective immediately. It described Volition as the studio behind Descent, FreeSpace, Red Faction, and Saints Row. Ars Technica’s August 31, 2023 report.
Did Volition make Descent?
Yes. The studio began in 1993 as Parallax Software, and Ars Technica reports it first made a name for itself with Descent, a 3D space shooter. Volition’s farewell also named Descent among the games associated with its history. The studio itself noted that “Volition made Descent?!” was a familiar refrain from fans.

That connection is a key part of Volition’s history, but it is not the whole of it: the studio later became known for series including FreeSpace, Red Faction, and Saints Row.
Why did Volition shut down?
Volition’s closure was reported in the context of Embracer Group’s restructuring, but the public statements do not supply a complete, studio-specific explanation. In a June 13, 2023 letter, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors said the company’s group-wide actions could include closing or divesting studios and terminating or pausing game projects. Ars Technica reported Volition’s shutdown as part of that restructuring. Its report also noted that the reception and sales of the 2022 Saints Row reboot may have played a role, but that was presented as a possibility, not a confirmed cause. No definitive, more specific explanation is established by these public sources.

The closure marks the end of the studio, not evidence that its games have disappeared. The sources cited here do not establish who currently owns rights to individual titles, whether particular editions remain available, or what support or compatibility options exist. One similarly named project should not be confused with Volition’s Descent: Embracer’s FY 2022/2023 annual report said Saber Interactive had started development on a separate game based on Asmodee’s tabletop game Descent.
