32GB RAM Overtakes 16GB in Steam’s September 2026 Survey

32GB leads 16GB in Steam’s September 2026 RAM figures, but the survey tracks participating users—not all PC owners—and does not explain their upgrade choices.

32GB is the most common reported system RAM capacity in Steam’s September 2026 Hardware & Software Survey. Secondary coverage of the overall results puts 32GB at 42.22% and 16GB at 37.82%; Valve’s separate Windows-only table reports 43.28% and 37.60%, respectively. The figures describe survey participants—not all PC owners—and do not show that users upgraded because of game requirements or memory prices.

What the September 2026 Steam survey shows

In the overall survey figures reported by Tom’s Hardware, systems with 32GB of RAM account for 42.22% of respondents, compared with 37.82% for 16GB. That makes 32GB the leading reported capacity in this survey snapshot.

Valve’s official Steam Hardware & Software Survey page also shows a PC-filtered, Windows-only RAM table. In that separate cut, 32GB is 43.28% and 16GB is 37.60%. These are different populations and should be read separately, not combined into one comparison.

What those percentages do—and do not—mean

Valve says, “Participation in the survey is optional, and anonymous.” The result is therefore a snapshot of participating Steam users, not a census of PC owners or a measure of every gaming system. The figures report installed RAM capacity; they do not establish how well a system performs, whether a particular game needs more memory, or why someone chose a configuration.

Crucial 32GB DDR5 RAM Kit (2x16GB), 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory 262-Pin SODIMM, Compatible with Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000, Black - CT2K16G56C46S5
  • Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
  • Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
  • Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
  • Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8

In particular, the survey does not show that high memory costs caused users to move to—or avoid—32GB. It also does not identify the RAM generation, form factor, speed, or the hardware involved.

Memory prices are a separate signal

On September 30, 2026, TrendForce forecast that conventional DRAM contract prices would rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in Q4 2026, citing supplier capacity priorities for advanced-process server products and an undersupplied overall market. This is a forecast for contract prices, not a quoted retail price for a consumer 32GB kit. It provides market context, but does not explain the Steam survey’s configuration shares.

Should you upgrade from 16GB to 32GB?

The survey’s most common configuration is not, by itself, a recommendation to upgrade. Whether 32GB is useful depends on your games, other applications running at the same time, and the limits of your particular desktop or laptop. Check the requirements and actual memory use relevant to your setup before deciding.

If you do consider a kit, verify your system’s supported memory generation and maximum capacity, the number of available slots, and—in a laptop—the memory type and whether it can be upgraded. The survey does not identify a compatible product or establish that every 16GB system can accept a 32GB kit.
