Where Dolls Hang, an upcoming survival psychological horror game from solo developer Steelkrill Studio, draws on the eerie imagery of Mexico’s Isla de las Muñecas—the Island of the Dolls. Its most direct link to reality is visual: GameSpot reports that some in-game doll models were made from photographs of real dolls, and that photographs also appear in the game.

What is Where Dolls Hang?

Where Dolls Hang is a survival psychological horror game by Steelkrill Studio, which describes itself as an independent solo developer. Steam lists the game for release in 2026, but its listing does not give an exact launch date. The description has players investigate places marked by strange events and hanging dolls, explore dangerous locations, gather evidence, uncover secrets, and use a boat while confronting the unknown. How does the game use real photographs?

GameSpot reports that Steelkrill Studio said: “Some of the doll models you’ll find were created using real photographs.” According to the report, photographs can also be found in the game. It describes a gameplay clip in which a photograph of a dirt-marked doll head is followed by a matching-looking head mounted on a pike in the scene. GameSpot’s October 6, 2026 report

That means the unsettling effect is not only that dolls appear in threatening settings: some of their visual details reportedly begin with images of real objects. The game’s Steam description does not independently confirm this production process, so the photograph detail is attributable to GameSpot’s account of the developer’s statement.

What is the Island of the Dolls?

GameSpot connects the game’s imagery to Isla de las Muñecas, known in English as the Island of the Dolls, in Mexico. The report recounts local folklore that dolls were hung around the island in connection with the spirit of a drowned girl, and that caretaker Don Julián Santana collected dolls from the water. Those details are part of the legend as reported; they do not establish that the island is supernaturally haunted or verify the story as history.

A September 2026 report by CDJuegos also links the game’s doll imagery to Isla de las Muñecas and describes real-doll photographs being turned into 3D models. It is secondary reporting, so the strongest specific attribution for the photograph claim remains GameSpot’s account of what the developer said. CDJuegos’ report
