The best space game like EVE Online depends on which part of EVE you want to keep: piloting, a player-run economy, consequential PvP, exploration, or long-term sandbox progression. EVE Online combines warfare, politics, piracy, trading, and exploration in a community-driven MMORPG. No alternative here reproduces that entire mix; some are multiplayer sandboxes, while others are solo strategy, exploration, or action games.

For hands-on piloting and space-sim activities, start with Elite Dangerous. For a solo trading and fleet-management sandbox, look at X4: Foundations. No Man’s Sky favors exploration and building; Stellaris favors empire-scale strategy. The list below matches games to the experience you want and how much multiplayer matters.

What makes a game like EVE Online?

Similarity is not a single measure. EVE’s distinctive combination is a shared multiplayer world alongside trading, politics, piracy, exploration, and warfare. A game can share one of those pillars without offering the others. CCP describes EVE as spanning 7,000 star systems and involving hundreds of thousands of other players; those figures describe EVE, not a benchmark for the games below.

Use these distinctions to narrow the list:

  • Shared world: Do other players inhabit and affect the same online space, or is the game primarily solo?
  • Economy and industry: Is trading or manufacturing central, and is the market player-driven?
  • Combat: Are you engaging in PvP, tactical encounters, or direct action combat?
  • Perspective: Do you pilot a ship yourself, explore on foot, or command fleets and civilizations strategically?
  • Solo fit: Can the main loop work alone, or is social play a core part of it?

Which EVE-like game should you choose?

Game Best for Multiplayer and economy How it differs from EVE
Elite Dangerous Personally piloting ships and pursuing space-sim activities Persistent multiplayer sandbox; trading and other activities are part of its appeal More hands-on flight, less corporation-scale political and economic play
Star Citizen Immersive first-person shared-universe ambitions Persistent MMO-style setting with trading, mining, piracy, exploration, and fleet combat Its development status and stability make it a different proposition from a finished, established game
X4: Foundations Solo trading, manufacturing, and fleet management Single-player; no MMO social layer or EVE-like player-driven market You run an industrial sandbox without other players shaping the economy
No Man’s Sky Exploration, survival, and construction Broad multi-platform adventure with multiplayer features; not centered on an EVE-style player economy Exploration and building take priority over political and economic competition
Stellaris Empire-scale diplomacy, expansion, and war Grand strategy; the core comparison is civilization management, not piloted MMO play You direct a civilization rather than fly a ship in a shared space sandbox
Everspace 2 Action-RPG space combat and story Combat-forward alternative rather than an MMO economy Emphasizes shooter action, loot, and narrative rather than social sandbox systems
FTL: Faster Than Light Tactical ship command and high-stakes runs Roguelike strategy, not a persistent multiplayer world Its consequence comes from run-based failure and restarting, not an ongoing online sandbox

Best games like EVE Online for piloting and multiplayer

1. Elite Dangerous

Choose Elite Dangerous if EVE’s ship setting appeals to you but you want to control the ship directly. Its activities include trading, mining, piracy, exploration, and faction play, making it the closest match here for a piloted space-sandbox feel. That does not make it a replica: its emphasis on flying differs from EVE’s fleet-strategy focus, and it lacks an equivalent corporation metagame at EVE’s scale.

#1 Best Overall
Everspace: Stellar Edition - Nintendo Switch
  • Encounters expansion included: encounters is the first major expansion for ever space, enriching the game world with new story characters and quest lines, a brand-new player ship, freighter-loads of novel equipment, additional enemies, and much more.
  • The sound of ever space: this original soundtrack contains more than 60 tracks, adding up to a duration of over three hours in total.
  • Enhance your home screen with animated wallpapers, epic background music as well as custom icons and sounds.

Space.com lists PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in its platform summary, but platform availability can change. Check the current store listing for your region and device before buying. GamesAkin’s comparison likewise frames Elite Dangerous as a spiritual sibling rather than a one-to-one replacement.

2. Star Citizen

Star Citizen is worth considering if the appeal is an immersive, first-person shared universe. The described activity range includes mining, trading, piracy, exploration, and fleet combat. Its development status and stability are important qualifications: check the comparison’s warning and the project’s current official status before deciding whether its present state suits you. It is not the straightforward choice for someone seeking a polished, finished EVE substitute.

Best solo space games for EVE players

3. X4: Foundations

X4: Foundations is the strongest fit for a player who wants to trade, manufacture, manage fleets, and fight without depending on an MMO community. It offers a single-player sandbox in which you can grow a space business and command assets. The trade-off is fundamental: other players do not create the social politics or player-driven market that make EVE’s economy distinctive. GamesAkin’s X4 overview specifically distinguishes its solo economy from EVE’s multiplayer one.

4. Stellaris

Stellaris suits the EVE player drawn to diplomacy, expansion, research, and war at a galactic scale, but who would rather direct an empire than fly a ship. It is a 4X grand-strategy game, not a piloted space MMO. Space.com describes its central appeal as guiding a civilization through growth, diplomacy, research, and conflict.

  • Includes: 1 game board, 51 cards, 20 tokens, 4 plastic mole rat movers and instructions, plus instructions for a challenge game and instructions. 2-4 players. (Ages 7 and up)

5. FTL: Faster Than Light

FTL is a compact alternative for players who enjoy making consequential decisions about a ship under pressure. Its roguelike structure combines tactical combat and progression within a run, with death sending you back to start again. That offers risk and strategic choices, but not EVE’s persistent world, player economy, or multiplayer stakes.

Best space games like EVE for exploration and action

6. No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky is a better match if you want to explore, survive, build bases, and roam a broad space-adventure setting. Space.com describes it as an open-world survival space sim with customizable bases, capital ships, vehicles, and archaeology, as well as years of free updates. It is available across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch in that guide’s platform summary; verify the current listing for your platform. Its breadth of exploration and construction does not make it a substitute for EVE’s player-run economy or political competition.

7. Everspace 2

Everspace 2 is for the player who wants space combat with action-RPG progression and a story. Space.com describes open-universe systems, color-coded loot, and a narrative about survival and betrayal. Its focus is combat and loot rather than persistent social play, player-driven trade, or corporation politics, so approach it as a different genre rather than an MMO alternative.

How to pick the right alternative

  • You want to fly the ship yourself: Start with Elite Dangerous.
  • You want other players in a shared space setting: Compare Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen, while weighing Star Citizen’s development status.
  • You want a solo business and fleet sandbox: Choose X4: Foundations.
  • You want exploration and building: Choose No Man’s Sky.
  • You want strategic politics and expansion: Choose Stellaris.
  • You want combat first: Try Everspace 2 for action-RPG play or FTL for tactical, run-based ship command.

For a quick comparison across these games, see Space.com’s guide to space games. Its platform summaries are useful context, but current platform support, editions, prices, and regional catalogs should be confirmed at the relevant store because they can change.

Are there space MMOs that are not EVE Online?

Yes, but “space MMO” can mean different things. Elite Dangerous is the clearest pick in this list for a piloted multiplayer space sandbox. Star Citizen is another shared-universe project, with development status and stability to consider. The other recommendations answer narrower preferences: X4 is solo, Stellaris is grand strategy, and No Man’s Sky, Everspace 2, and FTL prioritize exploration, action, or tactics over an EVE-like MMO economy.
