These 33 open-source games cover strategy, RPGs, shooters, racing, puzzles, and more—and each is available to play without buying the game. This is a genre-spanning shortlist, not an objective ranking: choose by the kind of play you want, then check the project’s official download and licensing details for your platform.
“Free to play” here means there is no purchase required to access the recommended game. It does not guarantee that every asset is open-licensed, that every platform has an official binary, or that a source port includes the original game data. The Open Source Game Clones directory distinguishes open-source projects from ports and reimplementations, and notes that code, assets, and original commercial-game files can have different terms.
How to choose from this list
Start with genre and play style. If you want a campaign, look for the strategy and RPG entries; for a quick match, try an arena shooter, racing game, or puzzle title. Then visit the project’s official site or repository to confirm that it offers a current way to play on your operating system.
- Complete game: A playable project intended to stand on its own.
- Port or reimplementation: A project that recreates or adapts another game. It may need separately obtained game data, and its code license does not necessarily cover that data.
- Engine or platform: A base for games or user-created content, not necessarily a self-contained game. Luanti, for example, is a platform; choose a game within it.
Open-source code and free access are separate questions. Art, music, game data, trademarks, and required files from a commercial original may have terms that differ from the code. Check the individual project’s licensing and download information before redistributing files or assuming a required data pack is free.

Beyond All Reason

- Confirm the play mode you want. For multiplayer or online projects, verify current server or service availability; for campaigns and single-player titles, check that the official download includes the content you expect.
