1. Delta — best DS emulator for most iPhone users
Delta is the easiest recommendation if Nintendo DS is your main target and you want a focused, consumer-friendly app rather than a general-purpose emulation frontend. Its official App Store information identifies iPhone and iPad support and documents Nintendo DS functionality built around melonDS.
Why choose Delta
- It is centered on Nintendo systems instead of presenting a large collection of unrelated cores.
- Its documented DS features include touch-input fixes and save-state handling.
- It supports iPad as well as iPhone.
- Controller skins and external controller support make it adaptable to different play styles.
- It is the most straightforward starting point for someone who has not used an emulator before.
DS games use two screens and often require tapping, dragging, or using a stylus-like pointer on the lower display. Delta’s touchscreen-oriented design makes it a sensible default for games that depend heavily on those controls, although the exact experience still varies by game and device.
Delta’s limitations
Delta is not the right choice if Nintendo 3DS is a major requirement or if you want a large, highly configurable multi-system library. Its official listing also describes experimental DS online multiplayer for patrons using third-party Nintendo WFC servers. That is not the same as a universal, stable online-play feature: availability depends on the relevant access arrangement, server, and setup.
Choose Delta if: you mainly want Nintendo DS games, prefer a polished Nintendo-focused interface, and want the least complicated recommendation.
2. Folium — best for DS plus 3DS
Folium is the clearest choice if you want Nintendo DS or DSi emulation alongside Nintendo 3DS in the same iOS app. Its official App Store listing explicitly names Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, and Nintendo 3DS among its supported systems.
Why choose Folium
- It covers DS, DSi, and 3DS rather than stopping at the original DS generation.
- It supports iPhone and iPad.
- Documented features include save states, custom artwork, system-file importing, and library improvements.
- It supports external controllers, including Backbone One, Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, PlayStation DualShock 4, PlayStation DualSense, and Xbox controllers.
- Ongoing core updates make it a useful option for users who want more than one Nintendo handheld generation in one app.
Folium’s limitations
Folium does not provide games or system files. You must supply your own legally obtained game dumps and, where required, firmware or other system files. This is an important distinction: installing an emulator does not give you a legal game library.
Folium also warns that emulation may be slow on older devices depending on the system being emulated. That warning is particularly relevant when moving beyond DS to more demanding 3DS emulation. Folium is therefore the best feature match for DS-plus-3DS users, but it should not be described as the fastest emulator without controlled testing on specific hardware.
Choose Folium if: you want DS, DSi, and 3DS support in one app and are comfortable managing your own games and system files.

3. Provenance — best for a broad multi-system library
Provenance is a multi-system iOS and iPadOS frontend rather than a DS-only application. Its official project documentation and App Store listing identify Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS among a much larger collection of supported platforms, including systems such as NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, and PSP.
Why choose Provenance
- It lets you organize DS games alongside many other supported platforms.
- Its project documentation lists both DeSmuME and melonDS as Nintendo DS cores.
- It supports ROM importing, artwork matching, save states, and controller use.
- It offers iPhone and iPad availability through its official distribution.
- Its open-source project gives advanced users a broader frontend to follow and configure.
The major benefit is library consolidation. Instead of maintaining a separate focused app for every console family, you can use one frontend for multiple systems where the relevant cores and files are supported.
Provenance’s limitations
Because Provenance covers many systems and exposes multiple core choices, it is broader and more feature-rich than a focused app such as Delta. That also means there may be more settings and decisions to understand. This is a positioning difference, not a measured claim that Provenance is objectively harder or easier to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIts support for a system or core should also not be read as a promise that every title behaves identically across devices. DS emulation can depend on the chosen core, game, graphics settings, input method, and iPhone or iPad hardware.
Choose Provenance if: Nintendo DS is one part of a large retro library and you want a single iOS frontend for multiple supported platforms.
4. RetroArch — best for advanced users and core-level control
RetroArch is the strongest option for experienced users who want a configurable frontend with separate emulator cores. Libretro’s official iOS documentation confirms worldwide App Store availability and explains both App Store and sideloaded builds. It also documents importing content through Apple’s Files app and using controllers on iPhone and iPad.
Its Nintendo DS options
RetroArch has two relevant Nintendo DS paths in the official Libretro core documentation:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- DeSmuME: supports
.ndscontent, saves, save states, remapping, and stylus or pointer input. - melonDS DS: supports Nintendo DS and DSi content, multiple screen layouts, and DSi mode.
This gives RetroArch an advantage for users who want to compare DS implementations, adjust screen arrangements, remap controls, or tune per-core options. It also makes the app more adaptable when a particular game or input style benefits from a different configuration.

RetroArch’s limitations
RetroArch has a steeper setup curve than a focused app. You need to understand the relationship between the frontend, cores, content directories, system files, and per-core settings. The App Store and sideloaded builds can also differ in core availability and capabilities related to JIT, so the installation method matters.
For a first-time emulator user who simply wants to open a DS game, that flexibility can feel like unnecessary complexity. For an experienced user, it is the main reason to choose RetroArch.
Choose RetroArch if: you want detailed configuration, multiple DS cores, stylus and pointer options, DSi support through melonDS DS, or one advanced frontend for many systems.

Which DS emulator should you choose?
- Pick Delta for the simplest Nintendo DS-focused experience on iPhone or iPad.
- Pick Folium when Nintendo 3DS or DSi support matters as much as DS support.
- Pick Provenance when you want DS integrated with a substantial multi-system library.
- Pick RetroArch when core selection, layouts, remapping, and advanced options are more important than a quick setup.
If you are undecided, start with Delta. Move to Folium for DS-plus-3DS coverage, Provenance for a broad library, or RetroArch when you have a specific configuration problem or advanced feature that a focused app does not provide.
What you need before setting up a DS emulator on iOS
Emulator apps are software players; they do not normally supply copyrighted games. Prepare:
- Your own legally obtained Nintendo DS game dumps.
- Firmware, BIOS, or other system files when the selected emulator or core requires them.
- Apple’s Files app for importing content where the emulator uses Files-based transfer.
- Enough free storage for your games, save data, artwork, and any imported system files.
Folium explicitly states that users must provide their own games and system files. RetroArch’s iOS documentation describes importing content through Apple’s Files app, while its DS-core documentation explains that BIOS and firmware requirements can vary by core and configuration. Follow the selected app’s current documentation rather than copying a generic BIOS folder layout from an unrelated guide.
Do not use unauthorized ROM repositories or “ROM packs.” This article does not provide game files, Nintendo system files, or instructions for obtaining copyrighted material without permission.

Fueled by a robust 4000mAh rechargeable battery, it delivers an impressive 6-8 hours of continuous gameplay on a single charge—perfect for long commutes, trips, or gaming sessions anywhere.
If you prefer physical buttons, an iPhone game controller such as the Backbone One can make button-heavy DS games more comfortable, although you will still use the touchscreen for stylus input. Folium’s official listing specifically names Backbone One and several other physical controllers, but that should not be treated as proof that every controller works identically with every emulator in this comparison.
A capacitive touchscreen stylus may be useful for some players, but it is a secondary choice. The research does not establish one universally required stylus model or a compatibility advantage that applies to all four apps.
About standalone melonDS on iOS
The official melonDS download page identifies melonDS as an open-source Nintendo DS emulator for iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. For a mainstream iPhone comparison, however, it is more practical to discuss melonDS as an underlying project or as a core used by frontends such as Delta and RetroArch unless a separately maintained, consumer-facing iOS distribution has been verified for the reader’s region and the date of publication.
Important compatibility and availability caveats
- Device differences matter: do not assume that every DS game runs perfectly on every iPhone or iPad.
- Older hardware may struggle: Folium specifically warns that emulation can be slow on older devices depending on the system.
- Online play is not guaranteed: Delta’s documented DS online multiplayer is experimental, limited to patrons, and uses third-party Nintendo WFC servers.
- Files are your responsibility: emulator apps do not automatically grant access to games, BIOS files, or Nintendo system files.
- Build type affects RetroArch: App Store and sideloaded builds can differ in available cores and JIT-related capabilities.
- Availability can vary: App Store listings, regional distribution, and app features can change; verify the current listing for your country and device.
Bottom line
For most people, start with Delta. It is the clearest Nintendo DS recommendation when you want a focused app with documented touchscreen, save-state, controller, and iPad features. Choose Folium if 3DS support matters, Provenance if you want one broad multi-system library, and RetroArch if you value multiple cores and deep control over simplicity.
Whichever app you choose, keep the DS experience in perspective: physical buttons can improve comfort, but touchscreen and stylus input remain central to many Nintendo DS games.
