Cloud-gaming subscriptions can be worth it, but they do not all sell the same thing. Some rent you remote gaming hardware while you provide the games; others include a rotating game catalog or bundle cloud play with a broader membership. If you already own PC games, GeForce NOW may offer the best fit. If you want games included, Xbox Game Pass is the stronger starting point. Existing Prime members can try Amazon Luna at no additional charge, while free tiers and day passes help occasional players test before committing.

A price comparison alone can mislead: a subscription that supplies remote hardware but no games is not directly comparable to one that includes a catalog. Consider the total cost: cloud subscription plus any required game purchase or publisher subscription, controller or other needed device, and possible data charges.
What are you actually paying for?
- Remote hardware: The service runs a game on a remote computer or console and streams the picture to your device. You may need to buy or subscribe to the game separately.
- An included catalog: A subscription lets you play eligible games while they remain in the catalog and your plan is active. It is access, not permanent ownership.
- A broader membership: Cloud gaming is one benefit among other services, as with Prime and Luna.
- Temporary access: A free tier or day pass can be a lower-commitment way to check compatibility and responsiveness.
These models answer different needs. Before comparing services, decide whether you want to stream games you already own, discover games included with a subscription, or get a bonus gaming option from a membership you already pay for.

Model 1: Free access and day passes
How it works
Free access or a short pass lets you try a cloud service without beginning with a recurring monthly subscription. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW membership page describes a Day Pass that provides 24 hours of premium cloud performance without a monthly commitment; NVIDIA says the pass cost can be applied toward the first month of membership. Check the current GeForce NOW membership terms for availability and conditions.
When it makes sense
- You play only occasionally or want access for a particular weekend.
- You are checking whether cloud gaming feels responsive on your home connection.
- You want to test a service on the actual TV, phone, Mac, Chromebook, handheld, or low-end PC you plan to use.
- You are unsure whether your game, storefront, controller, or device is supported.
What to watch for
Free access may involve queues, reduced priority, session restrictions, or lower performance. Those trade-offs can be frustrating for a scheduled multiplayer session. A pass can also cost more than a monthly plan if you use it repeatedly; compare the current prices rather than assuming that short-duration access is cheaper. You may still need a separate game license or subscription.
Verdict: This is the best model for reducing the risk of a bad fit, not necessarily for frequent play. Test first, then move to a monthly plan only if your actual play habits justify it.
Model 2: Bring your own games to a cloud PC
How it works
With a bring-your-own-game service, you pay for remote gaming hardware and connect supported game stores or subscriptions. GeForce NOW says it supports connections to storefronts and services including Steam, Epic Games, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, and PC Game Pass, and advertises more than 4,500 PC games. A listed game still needs to be supported for cloud play, and you need the right license or subscription to access it. See GeForce NOW’s current service information.

Boosteroid is another service readers can investigate when their games and location are a better match. Treat it as a possible BYOG alternative, not as an all-inclusive game catalog; check its current U.S. coverage, supported titles, plan terms, and price at Boosteroid’s official site.
Who gets the most value
- PC players who already own a substantial library on supported stores.
- Mac, Chromebook, handheld, or lower-spec PC users who want to stream supported PC games.
- Players who prefer PC versions or want to retain access to games they bought rather than depend entirely on a rotating subscription catalog.
- People who need more graphics performance than their local device provides and do not want to purchase a gaming PC.
The important catches
A GeForce NOW membership does not automatically buy you every game it can stream. Compatibility may depend on the title, store, launcher, publisher support, anti-cheat system, edition, and account access. DLC and mods may not work as expected, and support can differ between cloud services. The subscription also does not eliminate costs for games, expansions, or any separate publisher or PC-game subscription you need.
NVIDIA’s premium plans advertise higher resolutions, faster frame rates, longer sessions, and Install-to-Play access for premium members. Its Ultimate tier is marketed with capabilities up to 5K/120 and 360 FPS in supported circumstances. These are vendor-stated maximum capabilities, not a guarantee for every game, display, connection, or location; see NVIDIA’s plan details.
Verdict: For an existing PC-game library and a priority on cloud PC performance, this model is often the strongest fit. It is not automatically the cheapest: include the price of games you still need to buy.

Model 3: A subscription with an included game catalog
Xbox Game Pass plans and U.S. prices
Xbox Game Pass combines an eligible game catalog with cloud play on supported plans and titles. The current U.S. Xbox listing gives the following monthly prices and features. Prices and catalog counts can change; check the official plan listing before subscribing.

On April 21, 2026, Xbox announced that Ultimate’s U.S. price had fallen from $29.99 to $22.99 per month and described related plan changes. Xbox also said future Call of Duty titles would not join Game Pass at launch, while existing titles remained available under the stated policy. See Xbox’s announcement for the policy context.
What is and is not included
Separate four cases before assuming a game will stream: a title included in Game Pass and cloud-playable on your plan; a separately purchased title that supports cloud streaming; a title available to download but not to stream; and a title that has left the catalog. Xbox says cloud gaming also supports streaming select games players own or buy separately, but that does not make every owned or catalog game cloud-compatible. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming page for eligible games and devices.
Xbox’s U.S. listing describes Ultimate as including benefits such as EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer, and higher-priority streaming. These benefits and their terms are subject to change. A subscription grants access under its terms; it is not permanent ownership, so access to an included game can end if the game leaves the catalog or your subscription ends.

Who benefits most
- Players who want to sample many games instead of purchasing each one.
- Households that play across genres or have Xbox devices as well as phones, PCs, or TVs.
- Players who also use local downloads or other included membership benefits.
Verdict: Game Pass is the clearest choice if an included catalog matters more than keeping permanent access to each game. Ultimate is not automatically the best value: Essential or Premium may be enough if you do not need the largest listed catalog, shortest waits, or the additional benefits.

Amazon Luna with Prime
Amazon says Prime members can access more than 50 Luna games at no additional charge, and describes GameNight as a collection of local multiplayer games designed for shared play. Luna Premium is a paid add-on that expands the selection and replaces the former Luna+ subscription. Details are on Amazon’s Luna announcement.
Amazon lists U.S. Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year; those are membership prices, not the cost of Luna alone. See Amazon’s Prime membership information. If you already pay for Prime, Luna may have little or no incremental cost for the included selection. If you would subscribe to Prime only for cloud gaming, weigh the entire membership against the games and features you would actually use.
Who should consider it
- Existing Prime members who want a convenient extra gaming option.
- Families interested in supported local multiplayer or GameNight.
- Fire TV users and casual players who value simple living-room play over a deep PC storefront.
Luna works on supported devices including Fire TV, phones, tablets, browsers, and selected smart televisions, but exact game, device, and controller support varies. Some games require a controller or mouse and keyboard; smartphone-controller support is game-dependent. Amazon’s information describes cloud-delivered Luna games in the U.S. and several other countries, not worldwide availability. Luna is not a way to stream every game in a user’s PC library.

Verdict: Luna is most compelling as a bonus for Prime members or as an accessible casual TV option. It is a weaker standalone fit if you need broad PC-library support, a particular guaranteed title, or maximum graphics settings.
Which model is worth it for you?
- “I already own PC games.” Start with a BYOG service such as GeForce NOW, then check that your exact games, editions, and storefronts are supported. Consider Boosteroid only after checking its current support and service conditions for your location.
- “I want a large selection without buying every game.” Compare Game Pass tiers by catalog, cloud access, streaming priority, and benefits you will use. A larger tier is not worthwhile just because its headline count is higher.
- “I play only occasionally.” Try free access or a day pass first. If you need several passes in a month, compare their total against a monthly plan.
- “I already pay for Prime.” Try the Luna games included with Prime before adding a paid tier. Do not count the full Prime price as a gaming cost if you value its other benefits.
- “I want competitive performance.” Compare latency, queue priority, supported resolution and frame rate, session terms, and input support. Vendor maximums do not establish how a stream will perform on your connection. Try a fast-response game at your usual play time before relying on a service for competitive matches.
- “I want to play on a TV without buying a console.” Check the exact TV model, cloud app or browser, controller requirements, and the games you want. A compatible screen is still required; a TV app is not guaranteed to perform like a wired PC.
Costs and limitations to check before subscribing
Game access and catalog changes
For a BYOG service, confirm the supported game and the storefront license you need. For a catalog service, check that the title is currently included and cloud-playable in your region and on your plan. A game may be downloadable but unavailable to stream, or may later leave a subscription catalog. Subscription access is not the same as owning the game.
“Unlimited” is not a promise of identical service
Xbox lists unlimited cloud gaming on Essential, Premium, and Ultimate, while its U.S. listing says Ultimate has the highest streaming quality and shortest wait times. Entitlement, queue priority, image quality, frame rate, session duration, and any monthly usage or fair-use rules are separate things to verify. Check the plan terms for the games and devices you intend to use.
Connection, data use, and latency
Xbox lists a minimum 10 Mbps downstream connection for cloud console gaming, says some devices need 20 Mbps for best quality, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Those are service requirements and guidance, not a promise of smooth gameplay. Latency, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, distance to a server, and data caps can matter as much as download speed. Device and input compatibility
Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select LG, Samsung, and VIDAA smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, selected Meta Quest headsets, and browsers among its supported options. Availability depends on device, title, region, and plan. Check the exact television model or browser, whether a game has touch controls, and whether your controller, keyboard and mouse, headset, and audio routing work. Smart-TV apps can differ in decoding performance and peripheral support from a PC or console.
Recurring billing and promotions
Promotional subscriptions may renew automatically at the regular price unless canceled. Before starting an offer, record its end date, renewal price, billing interval, cancellation deadline, refund terms, and eligibility. Xbox says subscriptions continue automatically unless canceled; confirm current billing terms on its cloud gaming information page and the checkout screen. An annual plan can lower effective monthly cost but ties you to a service longer; try it month to month first if performance or catalog fit is uncertain.

How to test cloud gaming before committing
- Check the exact game. Search the service’s current cloud-playable catalog and confirm the edition, storefront, account requirements, and region.
- Use your intended device. Test on the TV, phone, browser, handheld, or Mac you plan to play on, not only on a different device.
- Try a latency-sensitive game. A shooter, racing game, or rhythm game makes delay easier to notice than a turn-based game.
- Test at your usual play time. Evening congestion and queue conditions may differ from a daytime test.
- Compare networks where practical. Try home Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular if relevant, and note whether stutter or response changes.
- Check controls and audio. Confirm pairing, button mapping, vibration, touch controls, headset support, and audio routing for your setup.
- Calculate the real cost. Add the subscription, required game purchases, controller or other hardware, any Prime membership you would not otherwise buy, taxes, and possible data-overage charges.
- Cancel if it was only a trial. Check the renewal date and cancel recurring billing before the deadline if you do not intend to keep the service.
