The Quick Resume control is not a console-wide off switch; other games can still use Quick Resume.
What changed in the April update?
Microsoft calls this an Xbox console update, rather than identifying it as a hardware firmware revision. Its two headline changes are per-game Quick Resume settings and slider-based custom interface colors. The announcement does not specify an operating-system build number.
Quick Resume is configurable game by game
You can prevent a particular title from using Quick Resume, so it launches fresh instead of trying to restore a suspended session. The setting is aimed at games that struggle after long inactivity or depend on persistent online connections. It leaves Quick Resume available for other titles.
Custom colors add accents, not a full theme
You can adjust a custom color with sliders and apply it to subtle parts of the Xbox interface, including an accent in the Guide. Microsoft says readability guardrails limit the treatment; this is not a system for recoloring every screen, app, game, or tile. You can turn off the Guide accent separately.

How to disable Quick Resume for one game
Microsoft lists two routes to the per-game setting. Menu wording or placement may vary slightly with console software and language.
From the Quick Resume group
- Open the Quick Resume group.
- Highlight the game you want to change.
- Open More options.
- Select Manage Quick Resume, then choose the option to disable Quick Resume for that game.
From the game tile
- Highlight the game tile.
- Open Manage game and add-ons.
- Select Quick Resume settings and disable Quick Resume for that title.
To restore the usual behavior, return to that game’s Quick Resume settings and turn the option back on. Disabling it changes how the title launches in future; it is not necessarily the same as clearing a session that is already suspended. If the game remains in Quick Resume and still misbehaves, quit or remove that existing suspended instance as a separate step.

When should you turn it off?
Quick Resume is useful when you want to return quickly to a saved session. A game that stays connected to an online service while suspended may instead return with an expired connection, stale session, or need to refresh after an update or period of inactivity. A fresh launch can help in those cases, but it is not a guaranteed fix and cannot bypass a game’s own online sign-in requirements.
- Consider disabling it: a particular online game repeatedly resumes to a connection error, unusable lobby, or other stale state; or you prefer a predictable fresh launch.
- Consider leaving it on: the game resumes reliably, you value returning quickly to a paused session, or the title is offline and single-player.
This control is per game, not account-wide or system-wide. If you want every game to launch fresh, you would need to change each title individually where the setting is available; manually quitting games is another option.

How to set a custom Xbox color
- Open Settings > General > Personalization > Customize the guide.
- Open the color controls and adjust the available sliders to create your custom color.
- Apply the color. To stop using it, choose a standard system color; Microsoft says your last custom color is saved so you can return to it later.
The custom treatment is an accent, including a light accent in the Guide, rather than a complete dashboard skin. Microsoft also provides an option in this personalization area to turn off the Guide accent. High-contrast or other accessibility display settings may affect how accents appear, so check the result on your console if you use them.

Microsoft first announced these features for select Xbox Insiders on March 18, 2026, then included them in its broader April console update announced April 30. Quick Resume is primarily relevant to Xbox Series X|S, but Microsoft’s announcement does not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility table. Availability can depend on installed system software, rollout status, and the title; do not assume that every older or backward-compatible game exposes the same control.

- Check that the console has installed the April 2026 public update, then restart it.
- If you are enrolled in an Xbox Insider ring, check whether the console is using preview software rather than the public release channel.
- If the option is still absent, consider whether the game is an older or backward-compatible title; menu availability may vary.
- If changing the setting does not resolve a problem, quit any existing suspended session and launch the game again. Updates or the game’s online requirements can still affect launch behavior.
Microsoft’s public announcement and Insider feature post describe the options and paths, while Xbox Support’s Alpha, Beta, and Omega 2604 notes document the preview-channel rollout.
