How the multiplayer investigation works
One player as the Ripper
In the advertised online mode, one participant takes the Ripper role while the others investigate. The detectives must separate hard evidence from fake evidence and recognize when a changing alibi signals deception. The Ripper’s ability to misdirect the group makes communication and evidence assessment central to each round.
Up to eight players online
The Steam-linked description lists online multiplayer for up to eight players. That maximum applies to the group size described for the online mode; the sources do not specify whether every configuration from two through eight players uses identical rules or balancing.

Conviction as the endpoint
Investigation culminates in a formal conviction phase. The available description does not publish the exact voting interface, penalties for a wrong conviction or the number of rounds in a complete match, so those details should not be assumed.
Solo play and Magistrate Mode
4 Penny Coffins also includes a solo option for players who do not want to assemble an online group. Launch coverage describes Magistrate Mode as supporting one to five players against an AI-controlled Ripper.
