Use 16:9 for conventional horizontal video composed for widescreen viewing. Keep footage in 4:3 when that is its native shape—common with older game footage—or when you deliberately compose for that frame. YouTube’s player adapts to different video shapes, so you do not need to stretch or crop a 4:3 image just to fill a widescreen player.
What changes between 4:3 and 16:9?
An aspect ratio describes the relationship between a frame’s width and height. A 4:3 frame is relatively more square; a 16:9 frame is wider. For example, 1920×1080 is 16:9, while 640×480 is 4:3.
The choice affects how much of the original image appears and the space around it in a player. It does not, by itself, establish that a video will receive more views or perform better: YouTube’s official guidance cited here provides no audience-performance comparison between the two ratios.
Which aspect ratio should you use for YouTube?
Choose 16:9 for footage framed for widescreen
YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for playback on computers. It is the natural choice for most contemporary horizontal game capture and other footage composed for a widescreen frame. YouTube’s recommended upload settings list 1920×1080 (1080p), 1280×720 (720p), and 3840×2160 (2160p/4K) among the default 16:9 sizes. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings

Keep 4:3 when the image was made for 4:3
For older games, archival footage, or a composition intentionally designed for 4:3, preserving the original frame avoids cutting off image content or distorting its proportions. YouTube’s player adapts to the video shape; a 4:3 upload does not have to be stretched or cropped to fit a 16:9-shaped computer player. YouTube’s partner-delivery specifications also recommend using native aspect ratios. YouTube partner video and audio formatting specifications
| Decision | 16:9 | 4:3 |
|---|---|---|
| Computer playback | Matches YouTube’s stated standard aspect ratio for computers. | The player adapts to the video’s shape; the image may occupy a different shape within a widescreen viewing context. |
| Good fit | Footage composed or captured for widescreen. | Native 4:3 footage, including older game images, or a deliberately 4:3 composition. |
| Official resolution examples | YouTube’s general upload-settings page lists 1280×720, 1920×1080, and 3840×2160 as default 16:9 sizes. | YouTube’s partner-delivery specifications recommend at least 640×480 for 4:3 content; this is guidance for partner deliveries, not a universal minimum for every creator. |
How YouTube displays each shape
On computers, YouTube describes 16:9 as the standard player ratio, but its player adapts to videos with other shapes. The Android YouTube app also adapts the player for vertical, square, and horizontal videos. Presentation therefore depends partly on the viewing device; do not assume every viewer sees a 4:3 video in an identical widescreen frame. Export the image without forced bars or distortion
- Start with the source frame. Check the footage or game capture’s native dimensions and intended composition.
- Keep its proportions. If the source is 4:3, export it as 4:3 rather than stretching it wider or cropping off image content simply to fill a 16:9 canvas.
- Do not add decorative bars to force a player shape. YouTube advises against adding padding or black bars directly to a video because they interfere with the player’s ability to adapt dynamically. This is different from bars that are genuinely part of the source or intended master.
- Choose a resolution that matches the aspect ratio. For 16:9, use an appropriate size such as 1280×720 or 1920×1080 from YouTube’s general recommended settings. For 4:3, YouTube’s partner-delivery page recommends at least 640×480 specifically for partner deliveries.
Do not confuse video ratio with thumbnail ratio
YouTube recommends a 16:9 thumbnail for regular videos, but that recommendation applies to the thumbnail image, not the video frame. A 4:3 video can retain its native aspect ratio while using a separately prepared 16:9 thumbnail. Shorts have separate thumbnail guidance. YouTube thumbnail guidance
