For 1080p YouTube Live, use 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 30 fps, or 14 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps. At 60 fps, YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. These are recommended incoming video bitrates—not guaranteed quality levels or a promise that your internet connection can sustain them. Choose the profile your encoder supports and your upload connection can hold reliably.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrates for HD
YouTube Help’s encoder settings list separate recommended bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and video codec. The figures below are video bitrate recommendations for the stream sent to YouTube; they do not include audio.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 video bitrate | H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed in 2026, not results from a controlled image-quality comparison. A codec’s listed bitrate alone does not establish that it will look better in every scene. Check that your encoder and YouTube ingestion setup support the codec you choose; if not, use a supported option such as H.264 and its corresponding recommendation. 1080p30 or 1080p60: which should you choose?
Use 1080p30 for less motion-heavy content
For a talking head, presentation, or other relatively calm scene, 30 fps is often a practical starting point. It uses a lower recommended video bitrate than 1080p60 for either codec in YouTube’s table, and can reduce the demand on your encoder and upload connection. It is not a universal rule: choose based on the motion in your content and what your equipment and connection can sustain.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use 1080p60 when smooth motion matters
Fast gameplay and other motion-heavy footage can benefit from 60 fps. It requires the higher recommended bitrate—12 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 17 Mbps with H.264—and puts more demand on encoding and upload capacity. If your system or connection cannot reliably maintain that profile, a stable 1080p30 or 720p stream is preferable to an unstable higher setting.
Encoder settings that matter
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are listed options, subject to encoder and ingestion compatibility.
- Rate control: Set constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Select 30 or 60 according to the content, equipment, and reliable upload capacity.
- SDR picture: Use progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, and 8-bit depth.
- Stereo audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3, with 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz in its advanced settings.
In YouTube Live Control Room, automatic resolution and frame-rate detection is the recommended default. A custom stream key lets you select settings manually. YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple output formats so viewers can watch on different devices and network connections. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the full requirements, since its settings may change.

How to choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
- Measure upload capacity. Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to your broadcast. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and choosing a quality your connection can sustain reliably.
- Leave headroom. Do not treat a speed-test peak as guaranteed capacity. Normal network variation can make a bitrate that barely fits the test result unstable.
- Match bitrate to codec and profile. Use the appropriate YouTube recommendation from the table for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and supported codec.
- Test before the event. YouTube’s advice is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Run a private or unlisted stream with representative movement and audio, then check the resulting stream health.
- Adjust if needed. If the test or live stream is unstable, reduce video bitrate or resolution and test again. This follows YouTube’s guidance to prioritize a reliably sustained stream; a nominally higher resolution is not useful if it interrupts or buffers.
Why a YouTube Live stream may lag or buffer
- Bitrate is too high for sustained upload capacity: Lower the bitrate or resolution, then retest. A momentary speed-test result does not establish what your connection will sustain during a broadcast.
- Chosen profile is more demanding than necessary: If 60 fps cannot be maintained, try 30 fps; if 1080p remains unstable, test 720p using the matching bitrate recommendation.
- Encoder configuration does not match the selected profile: Check codec compatibility, CBR, and the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 2-second keyframes and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- The stream has not been tested with representative content: Movement and audio can differ from an idle setup. Test with the kind of action and sound planned for the broadcast, and monitor YouTube stream health for warnings.
YouTube’s published settings guidance does not identify one universal cause for every lag or buffering problem. Use stream-health warnings and repeatable tests to determine whether the connection or encoder profile needs adjustment.
