Forty-six House Democrats asked the Federal Trade Commission to examine the labor-market consequences of Electronic Arts’ proposed $55 billion sale, according to a January 24, 2026 report by Engadget. Their request raises questions about wages, possible layoffs, labor-market concentration and ownership overlap; it is not a finding that the deal caused job cuts or suppressed pay.
What the lawmakers asked the FTC to examine
The reported request focused on how the acquisition might affect workers in the video-game industry. The lawmakers called for a “thorough investigation” into four related issues, as quoted by Engadget:
- Wage-setting power: whether EA already has the ability to influence compensation in relevant labor markets, and whether the deal could affect that power.
- Potential layoffs: the likelihood of job cuts after the transaction. The report does not identify a forecast or say that merger-related layoffs had occurred.
- Labor-market concentration: how much employment choice workers have in relevant geographic areas and occupations.
- Cross-ownership: whether overlapping ownership interests could shape labor outcomes.
These are issues the signatories wanted regulators to investigate, not established effects or conclusions by the FTC. No independent estimate of employment impacts or post-acquisition layoffs is reported in the available coverage.
What EA’s announced sale includes
Electronic Arts announced the transaction on September 29, 2025. The proposed buyers are a consortium of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. EA’s SEC-filed announcement described an all-cash transaction with an enterprise value of approximately $55 billion and $210 per share for stockholders. What is known about the deal’s status
EA reported that stockholders approved the merger on December 22, 2025. In a later filing, the company said all required regulatory approvals had been obtained as of July 30, 2026, and expected the transaction to close around the close of trading on August 4, 2026. That filing gives an anticipated closing date; it does not establish whether the transaction subsequently closed or confirm the company’s current ownership status. EA’s July 30, 2026 SEC filing

The congressional intervention was a call for scrutiny of possible labor effects. It is not evidence that specific workers lost jobs because of the proposed acquisition, that wages were reduced, or that the FTC reached a conclusion about the deal. The central question in the report is whether regulators should assess how ownership and consolidation might affect workers, including across particular occupations and locations.
