5 Best Cloud Gaming Services for 2024

GeForce NOW leads for owned PC games and image quality, while Xbox Cloud Gaming leads for an included catalog. Compare five late-2024 services by licensing model, price, devices, network needs, and regional limits.

For a late-2024 U.S.-focused buying decision, NVIDIA GeForce NOW is the best choice for people who already own compatible PC games, while Xbox Cloud Gaming is the best choice for an included subscription catalog. PlayStation Plus Premium is the logical pick for PlayStation households, Boosteroid is the useful fallback when a particular PC game is missing from GeForce NOW, and Amazon Luna is the easiest low-commitment option for Prime members and TV gaming.

There is no universal winner. These services use different licensing models: some stream games you already own, some include a rotating catalog, and a cloud PC gives you an entire remote computer. Your existing library, device, location, internet route, controller, tolerance for queues, and willingness to buy games matter more than a provider’s headline game count.

Quick verdict: the five best cloud gaming services in late 2024

The ranking below is a use-case ranking, not a claim that one service has the best catalog or performance for everyone. Prices are U.S. prices where a U.S. price was available, except Boosteroid’s separately advertised euro offer. Taxes, promotions, annual billing, country availability, and supported games can change the real cost.

Rank Service Best for Catalog model Late-2024 price snapshot Biggest trade-off
1 NVIDIA GeForce NOW Existing PC libraries and the best image quality Bring your own supported games Free; Performance $9.99/month; Ultimate $19.99/month You still need to own the game, and ownership does not guarantee support
2 Xbox Cloud Gaming A large ready-to-play catalog and Xbox/PC cross-device use Included Game Pass catalog, plus limited owned-game streaming Game Pass Ultimate $19.99/month Cloud gaming required Ultimate; Standard at $14.99 did not include it
3 PlayStation Plus Premium PlayStation owners and Sony’s classic catalog Included PlayStation catalog and selected owned PS5 games $17.99/month or $159.99/year in the U.S. Streaming catalog, devices, and countries are restricted
4 Boosteroid PC games unavailable on GeForce NOW Bring your own supported games or qualifying PC Game Pass entitlement Advertised at €9.89/month or €7.49/month with annual billing in a November offer Performance and queue conditions vary sharply by location
5 Amazon Luna Prime members, casual play, and simple TV gaming Prime selection, Luna+ channel, and selected linked-library games Prime games included with Prime; Luna+ about $9.99/month Smaller catalog and generally 1080p/60fps streaming in 2024

For a broader technical comparison, TechRadar’s September 2024 testing found GeForce NOW ahead of Xbox Cloud Gaming and Luna in image quality and available resolution. That does not make it the best value for someone who wants to play new releases without purchasing them.

What cloud gaming actually means

Cloud gaming runs the game on a remote server. The service sends an interactive video stream to your device, while your controller, keyboard, mouse, or touch input travels back to the server. Your phone, Chromebook, Mac, smart TV, or low-power laptop is mainly decoding video rather than rendering the game locally.

That makes cloud gaming different from three commonly confused alternatives:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Remote Play: Your own PS4, PS5, Xbox, or gaming PC renders the game and streams it to another device. The console or computer must be powered on or available, and the game normally has to be installed there.
  • Downloadable subscription games: Game Pass or PlayStation Plus may let you download a game to a console or PC. Download access is not the same as cloud availability.
  • A full cloud PC: Services such as Shadow provide a remote Windows desktop rather than a curated game-streaming catalog. You get more control, but also more setup and usually a different price structure. PCWorld’s service taxonomy explains this distinction.

The five services in this guide fall mainly into two groups. GeForce NOW and Boosteroid are bring-your-own-game services: the subscription provides access to a remote gaming machine, but you generally need the game on a supported storefront. Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Plus Premium, and Luna primarily offer included catalogs, although each has exceptions for selected owned games or linked accounts.

How to choose a cloud gaming service

  1. Check where you own your games. Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, GOG, Battle.net, Microsoft Store, and Xbox entitlements are not interchangeable. Search for the exact game and storefront version before paying.
  2. Decide whether you want ownership or access. GeForce NOW and Boosteroid can be inexpensive if you already own a supported library. Game Pass Ultimate may be better if you want to sample hundreds of games without buying each one.
  3. Match the service to your device. GeForce NOW and Xbox are flexible on PC, mobile, browsers, and selected TVs. PlayStation Plus Premium is strongest in the PlayStation ecosystem and uses a Windows PC app for PC streaming. Luna is particularly straightforward on Fire TV.
  4. Prioritize the type of game you play. A high-resolution single-player game can be excellent in the cloud. Competitive shooters and rhythm games expose latency, jitter, and controller problems more severely.
  5. Test the route, not just the speed. A fast connection can still perform badly if your traffic takes a long route to the data center, suffers packet loss, or shares congested Wi-Fi. A free tier or trial is more useful than a generic speed test performed in another room.

1. NVIDIA GeForce NOW: best for existing PC game libraries

Choose GeForce NOW if you already own compatible Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, GOG, Battle.net, or supported Xbox PC games and care most about streaming quality. It is the strongest default recommendation for a PC player who wants to avoid buying a gaming PC while retaining access to games they have purchased.

NVIDIA described a catalog of more than 1,800 titles from Steam, Xbox and supported PC Game Pass games, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft, GOG, and other stores in its January 2024 announcement. That figure should not be read as 1,800 games included with the membership. It refers to games available to stream when the user has the relevant ownership or subscription entitlement, and availability varies by storefront, country, and publisher.

Late-2024 membership options

  • Free: One-hour sessions, with possible queues.
  • Priority: $9.99/month. NVIDIA renamed this tier Performance in November 2024 without increasing the monthly price.
  • Ultimate: $19.99/month, with RTX 4080-class server hardware in the 2024 service structure and the highest streaming modes.
  • Day Passes: NVIDIA launched 24-hour passes in March 2024 at $3.99 for Priority and $7.99 for Ultimate. They are useful for testing a demanding game or playing during a short trip; see the Day Pass announcement.

In supported configurations, Ultimate could provide up to 4K/120fps, 1440p/120fps, or 1080p/240fps. Those are maximum service capabilities, not guarantees. The game, client device, display, server, network route, and subscription tier all matter. NVIDIA’s system requirements list the relevant device and connection requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why GeForce NOW leads this list

  • It avoids forcing an existing PC player into a second all-you-can-play catalog.
  • The Ultimate tier offered the most impressive image quality and high-refresh options among these five services in late-2024 comparative testing.
  • The free tier lets you test controller input, latency, and your own library before committing.
  • It works across Windows, macOS, Chromebook, browsers, Android, selected smart TVs, and other supported devices, with device-specific limitations.

What can go wrong

Buying a game on Steam does not guarantee that GeForce NOW supports it. NVIDIA must support the specific title, launcher, and storefront version, and publishers can delay, change, or remove support. Games with complicated launchers, anti-cheat systems, mods, or unusual account requirements can be less convenient because the cloud machine is not a persistent personal PC.

Account linking also needs attention. NVIDIA removed Epic Games Store launch options for Epic-purchased Ubisoft games beginning in October 2024; affected users had to launch through Ubisoft Connect after linking accounts, according to NVIDIA’s support notice.

There was also an important future-facing limit in the November 2024 plan change. NVIDIA announced a 100-hour monthly allowance beginning in 2025 for Performance and Ultimate members, with rollover and paid extra hours. Members who subscribed by December 31, 2024, could retain unlimited playtime through 2025 if their subscription stayed uninterrupted. Read the Performance membership announcement before treating older reviews as current.

Best match: A Steam-heavy player who already owns the games, wants 1440p or 4K where possible, and has a nearby NVIDIA data center.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Xbox Cloud Gaming: best included catalog

Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming if you want a large ready-to-play catalog, Xbox first-party games, day-one releases, and cross-device progress. It is included with Game Pass Ultimate rather than sold as a separate cloud subscription.

In late 2024, Game Pass Ultimate cost $19.99/month in the United States. It included hundreds of games across console, PC, and cloud, with releases such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 available day one. The relevant cheaper-looking plan was not Standard: Game Pass Standard cost $14.99/month but did not include cloud gaming, EA Play, or day-one releases. Xbox explains the difference in its Standard-plan documentation.

Where it works

Xbox Cloud Gaming supported browsers, Windows PCs, mobile devices, selected Samsung TVs, Xbox consoles, Amazon Fire TV devices, and Meta Quest headsets in supported markets. In July 2024, Xbox brought cloud gaming to selected Fire TV Stick models, allowing Ultimate members to play without an Xbox console; the Fire TV announcement lists the supported setup.

Microsoft also began letting Ultimate members stream selected games they owned outside the Game Pass catalog in November 2024. The initial selection contained more than 50 games and was available in all 28 supported cloud-gaming countries. To use it, open xbox.com/play, sign in, and select the Stream your own game collection when available. This was an expansion of the service, not proof that every Xbox or PC game could be streamed.

Strengths and limitations

  • Strong value: You can try a wide selection without purchasing every title separately.
  • Good ecosystem: Xbox, Windows PC, mobile, browser, and TV users can carry compatible saves and achievements across devices.
  • Accessible controls: Some mobile games support touch controls, though a controller remains preferable for most console-style games.
  • Lower technical ceiling: Xbox Cloud Gaming generally streamed at up to 1080p/60fps in late-2024 comparisons, below GeForce NOW Ultimate’s headline modes.
  • Catalog turnover: A cloud-playable game can leave Game Pass. Subscription access is not ownership.
  • Console versions: Cloud Gaming generally streams console versions. A console version may have different settings, mods, controls, performance, and downloadable content from the PC version.

Xbox Cloud Gaming remained labeled beta in late 2024, and queues or server availability could vary. The cloud catalog is also not identical to the full Game Pass catalog. Check for the cloud badge or cloud-playable listing before assuming a Game Pass download is also streamable.

Best match: A player who wants to play many games on a phone, browser, Fire TV, or modest PC and values access to a subscription catalog over maximum resolution.

3. PlayStation Plus Premium: best for PlayStation owners

Choose PlayStation Plus Premium if your game library, friends, saves, and preferred franchises are primarily on PlayStation. In the United States, the late-2024 price was $17.99/month or $159.99/year.

Premium combined the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, game trials, online multiplayer, cloud storage, and cloud streaming. Sony’s supported streaming selection included original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PSP games through the Classics Catalog, selected PS4 and PS5 games through the Game Catalog, selected PS5 game trials, and selected digital PS5 games owned by the subscriber. It was never the entire PlayStation library. Sony’s PS5 cloud-streaming announcement describes the supported categories.

Device and region restrictions

PS5 cloud streaming was available only in selected countries, and the exact catalog depended on region, tier, title, and device. On PC, streaming required the PlayStation Plus app, Windows, an adult account, at least 5Mbps broadband, and a compatible controller. It did not offer the same Mac or browser experience as Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW; see Sony’s PlayStation Plus PC requirements.

In November 2024, Sony began a Cloud Streaming beta on PlayStation Portal for Premium members. The beta supported more than 120 selected PS5 games at up to 1080p/60fps, but it did not support PS4 or PS3 games, purchased PlayStation Store games, Game Trials, party voice chat, or in-game commerce. Those restrictions make Portal cloud streaming a useful supplement, not a replacement for every PlayStation feature. Details are in Sony’s Portal announcement.

Cloud Streaming is not Remote Play

PlayStation Remote Play streams from your own PS4 or PS5 and normally requires the game to be installed on that console. Premium cloud streaming runs the game in Sony’s data center and does not require that console. Sony explains the distinction in its cloud-streaming documentation.

Best match: A PlayStation owner who wants to stream selected catalog and classic games, use Premium benefits, or test Portal cloud streaming in a supported country.

4. Boosteroid: best alternative for a specific unsupported PC game

Choose Boosteroid when the exact PC game you want is available there but missing from GeForce NOW. It is not automatically better than NVIDIA’s service; its value depends heavily on the nearest Boosteroid server, the title’s launcher, and whether you already own the game or have the required subscription.

Boosteroid’s model is broadly bring-your-own-game. A subscription generally provides the remote hardware, not the game license. In March 2024, Boosteroid added Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass support. Players needed both a Boosteroid subscription and an entitlement through PC Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, or a Microsoft Store purchase for a supported game. The provider’s Microsoft Store announcement explains the integration.

Hardware and price snapshot

Boosteroid launched 4K-capable Ultra servers in Europe in June 2024. Its technical description cited AMD EPYC processors and Radeon RX 7900 XT hardware, with up to 4K/120fps advertised in supported games and regions. As with every cloud service, that is a maximum capability rather than a promise that every game, device, server, or connection will reach 4K/120fps. See the 4K Ultra announcement and Ultra technical details.

A November 2024 offer advertised €9.89/month or €7.49/month with annual billing, but those were market-specific promotional prices rather than a universal U.S. dollar price. Boosteroid said it had more than 1,200 games and more than six million users in a November company description; those figures are provider-reported, not an independent audit. The offer also advertised no session-length or playtime limit at that time. Check the local checkout page and the exact game listing before subscribing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The regional caveat matters more here

Boosteroid can be an excellent solution if its local capacity is good and the game you want is supported. But performance can vary sharply by country and data-center distance. The company acknowledged unusually long waits and operational problems in early 2024 in an apology and service update. That history is a reason to test the service during your normal playing hours rather than relying only on a headline resolution.

Best match: A PC player who has checked the exact Steam, Epic, Microsoft Store, or PC Game Pass version and needs a title that GeForce NOW does not offer.

5. Amazon Luna: best for Prime members and casual TV gaming

Choose Luna if you already pay for Amazon Prime, want an uncomplicated TV setup, or need a casual family-gaming option rather than the highest-end PC streaming.

In the late-2024 Luna model, Prime members received Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite, and a rotating selection of games at no additional Luna charge beyond the Prime membership. Luna+ offered more than 100 games for about $9.99/month and included a seven-day trial. Ubisoft+ was a separate channel subscription. Users could link Ubisoft and GOG accounts to play selected owned PC games. Amazon described the regional channel model in its June 2024 Luna announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Devices and controls

Luna supported Windows, macOS, Chromebook, Fire TV, Fire tablets, Android, iOS browsers, and selected smart TVs. It worked with standard Xbox and PlayStation controllers, keyboard and mouse, and Amazon’s Luna Controller. Amazon recommended at least 10Mbps for 1080p streaming; its technical guidance includes the connection requirements.

Luna Couch allowed invited players to join certain local multiplayer sessions without having their own Luna subscription. That can make it useful for couch-style games on a TV, although compatible titles and country availability vary.

The compromises are the smaller catalog, channel-by-channel pricing, and a general 1080p/60fps ceiling in 2024 comparisons. Luna is therefore better viewed as an easy access service for Prime households than as a replacement for a high-end PC streaming tier.

Best match: A Prime member who wants to try cloud gaming on Fire TV or play casual and family-oriented games with minimal setup.

Network and hardware checklist

Download speed is only one part of cloud-gaming performance. Latency is the delay between your input and the server, jitter is variation in that delay, and packet loss causes missing data, freezes, or quality drops. Distance to the provider’s data center and Wi-Fi congestion can matter more than a high headline speed. A 2024 network-analysis study of GeForce NOW and Xbox Cloud Gaming traffic found that network conditions and client setup materially affected cloud-gaming behavior.

Service Provider-stated connection guidance What it means in practice
GeForce NOW 15Mbps for HD/60fps, 25Mbps for 1080p/60fps, 45Mbps for 4K/120fps; under 80ms latency required and under 40ms recommended These are targets for supported modes, not a guarantee of image quality or responsiveness
Xbox Cloud Gaming 10Mbps minimum; 20Mbps may be needed for best quality on some devices; 5GHz Wi-Fi recommended Expect adaptation when the network is busy or the device has a weak wireless signal
PlayStation Plus and Portal beta 5Mbps minimum; 7Mbps for 720p and 13Mbps for 1080p on Portal; Sony listed 23Mbps for 1080p and 52Mbps for 4K PS5 streaming Premium’s supported resolution and country limits still apply even with a faster connection
Amazon Luna At least 10Mbps for 1080p Enough for the advertised stream, but not proof that the route will have low latency

See NVIDIA’s system requirements, its network guidance, the Xbox Cloud Gaming FAQ, Sony’s Portal requirements, and Amazon’s Luna guidance for the provider-specific figures.

Use this setup before blaming the service

  • Use Ethernet when possible, especially for a TV or desktop.
  • If using Wi-Fi, connect to a clean 5GHz network near the router. Avoid playing through a weak 2.4GHz signal or a congested mesh node.
  • Turn off VPNs while testing. A VPN can route traffic through a distant server and add latency.
  • Test on the actual device and in the room where you will play.
  • Check data caps. At a sustained 25Mbps, the theoretical stream uses about 11.25GB per hour; at 45Mbps, it uses about 20.25GB per hour. Actual usage changes with codec, bitrate adaptation, resolution, and game activity.
  • Use a compatible controller for console-style games. Xbox and PlayStation cloud gaming generally require one, and GeForce NOW on a TV requires a supported gamepad. Keyboard and mouse support varies by service, game, and device.
  • On a phone, use unlimited or generous mobile data unless you have measured the service’s real consumption.

Device and TV considerations

PC and Mac users have the broadest choice. Chromebook users can access several services through supported apps or browsers. iPhone and iPad access is often browser-based or subject to service-specific app rules; do not assume that an Android app has an iOS equivalent. NVIDIA’s iOS guidance historically emphasized browser access and gamepad input.

For TV play, look for a native app on a supported Samsung or other smart TV, a compatible Fire TV device, or a console. If the TV lacks an app, a supported streaming stick or a low-cost computer connected by HDMI can work. A Bluetooth controller paired to the TV or streaming device is usually more important than the television’s processor.

Common problems and the fastest recovery path

Problem What to do
The game does not appear Search the provider’s live catalog and verify the exact storefront, edition, publisher, and region before subscribing. A game on Steam is not automatically supported on GeForce NOW or Boosteroid.
The wrong account launches Sign out of the launcher or disconnect the linked storefront account, then reconnect the intended account. Check both the cloud service account and the game-store account.
The queue is too long Try outside peak hours, move to a paid tier where applicable, or test another service with a nearby data center. Do not assume the provider with the most advertised games will have the shortest queue.
The image is blurry or keeps changing quality Reduce resolution or frame rate, use Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi, stop competing downloads and video streams, and check packet loss and jitter rather than download speed alone.
Controls do not work Pair the controller before launching the stream. Confirm that the service, browser, TV, and game support that controller; then close and restart the session if the input was not detected.
A save is missing Confirm the correct storefront and account, then verify that the game’s cloud saves are enabled. GeForce NOW does not support manually uploading arbitrary save files; supported-store cloud saving must be enabled as described in NVIDIA’s save guidance.
A game leaves a subscription catalog Streaming access ends when the title leaves unless you separately own it and the service supports that owned version. PlayStation says catalog games and benefits vary by time, region, tier, and device in its PlayStation Plus terms.
There is no native TV app Use a supported Fire TV or smart-TV app, a streaming stick, a console, or a small computer connected by HDMI.

What not to assume about cloud gaming

  • A larger game count is not automatically better. A 2,000-game bring-your-own-library service and a 400-game all-inclusive catalog solve different problems.
  • Game ownership is not universal access. Your Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, GOG, Battle.net, Xbox, and Microsoft Store licenses may be handled differently, and the exact game version must be supported.
  • A subscription is not ownership. Catalog titles can rotate out, and the same game may require a separate Ubisoft+, PC Game Pass, or other entitlement.
  • 4K/120fps is not a guaranteed experience. It describes a supported maximum under specific hardware, title, display, region, and network conditions.
  • Low latency is not a service-wide promise. Your route to the nearest data center is decisive. A review conducted in London, Texas, or another well-served location may not predict performance in rural areas, Australia, India, Latin America, or another supported market.
  • Cloud saves are not interchangeable. A save tied to a Steam version may not appear in a console version, a different storefront edition, or a different account.
  • Remote Play is not cloud gaming. Remote Play uses hardware you own; cloud gaming uses the provider’s server.

Final decision tree

  1. Do you already own PC games on Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, GOG, Battle.net, or a supported Xbox PC storefront? Start with GeForce NOW. Check the exact title and storefront first.
  2. Do you want new releases and a large included catalog without buying each game? Choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Do not choose Game Pass Standard expecting cloud access; it did not include Xbox Cloud Gaming in late 2024.
  3. Are you mainly a PlayStation player? Choose PlayStation Plus Premium, provided cloud streaming is available in your country and the titles you want are in the supported catalog.
  4. Is the specific PC game you want missing from GeForce NOW? Search Boosteroid for the exact version, then test the local server performance before committing.
  5. Do you already pay for Amazon Prime or mainly want to play on a TV? Try Amazon Luna first. Prime’s included rotation keeps the initial cost low, while Luna+ is available if its catalog suits you.

If none of these fits because you need unrestricted Windows software, persistent storage, mods, or complete desktop control, investigate a full cloud PC instead of a curated cloud-gaming service. That is a different product category with different costs and responsibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cloud gaming subscriptions include the games?

It depends on the service. Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Plus Premium, and Luna primarily provide included catalogs, although catalog access is limited by plan, country, device, and time. GeForce NOW and Boosteroid generally require you to own the game on a supported storefront or have the relevant PC Game Pass or other entitlement.

Can I play my Steam games without buying a gaming PC?

Often, but not automatically. GeForce NOW is the first service to check, followed by Boosteroid if the game is not available there. Search for the exact title and storefront version before subscribing, because Steam ownership does not guarantee that a publisher, launcher, or game is supported.

Is cloud gaming good on a phone or tablet?

It can be, provided you have a stable low-latency connection and a compatible controller. Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, and Luna support mobile use in different ways, while iPhone and iPad access may be browser-based. Unlimited or generous mobile data is strongly recommended.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will cloud gaming work on any smart TV?

No. App support varies by service and television model. Xbox Cloud Gaming and Luna supported selected TVs and streaming devices in late 2024, while GeForce NOW also had supported TV hardware. If your TV lacks a native app, use a compatible Fire TV or streaming stick, console, or computer connected by HDMI.

Which cloud gaming service has the lowest latency?

There is no universal answer. Latency depends on your distance from the provider’s data center, routing, Wi-Fi, jitter, packet loss, and the device. GeForce NOW often offered the strongest technical experience in late-2024 comparisons, but you should test the service at your actual location before paying.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pick GeForce NOW for compatible PC games you already own and the best late-2024 streaming quality. Pick Xbox Cloud Gaming through Game Pass Ultimate for the strongest included catalog and Xbox ecosystem. Choose PlayStation Plus Premium for a PlayStation-centered household, Boosteroid for a specific PC title unavailable on GeForce NOW, and Amazon Luna for Prime-friendly casual and TV gaming. In every case, verify the exact game, storefront, country, device, controller, and local network route before treating the advertised price or resolution as your real experience.
