You can make an Xbox Series X setup more useful without replacing the console or buying a new TV. Start with free display and connection checks, then consider storage, audio, charging, or another controller based on what your setup actually lacks. These are five budget-conscious ideas, not a verified cheapest-to-most-expensive ranking; compare current prices and compatibility in your market before buying.
1. Check your display and settings before buying anything
A setup change may be unnecessary if your current screen already supports the features you want. Xbox advertises up to 120 FPS, but 4K at up to 120 FPS requires supported content and a supported display, as Xbox notes on its Series X product page.
- Use the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable included with the Series X, rather than buying a replacement by default.
- Check your television or monitor specifications for the resolution and refresh rate you want to use.
- Review the console’s display settings and select only modes your screen supports.
If the display does not support a particular mode, changing console settings cannot add that capability. Decide whether the missing feature matters to the games you play before considering a display upgrade.
2. Add external USB storage for a larger library
A standard standalone hard drive is an option for adding storage to a Series X. Xbox’s console information confirms support for standard standalone drives, and its accessories catalog lists external game drives.

Compare drives by their current local price per usable capacity, connection and compatibility details, and whether you need to run games directly from the added storage. A standard external drive and an official Storage Expansion Card are not interchangeable in performance or use. Check the product details and Xbox guidance for the specific drive you are considering.
3. Choose a Storage Expansion Card if SSD-like performance matters
Xbox describes its dedicated Storage Expansion Card as plugging into the rear expansion port and replicating the console’s custom SSD experience, providing additional game storage at the same performance. Compare the card’s current cost and capacity with standard external storage, then choose based on whether matching the console’s custom SSD performance is worth the difference for your library. Prices and availability vary by market and retailer; no current lowest-cost card is established here.
4. Improve game audio and chat with a headset
If you do not have a suitable headset, a wired model may be a budget-conscious way to add game audio and voice chat. Xbox’s accessories catalog lists wired stereo headsets as well as wireless options. Compare the connection type, microphone and chat needs, comfort, and current price rather than assuming one category is always cheaper.

Check the product listing for Series X compatibility and the features you need before purchasing. The catalog establishes that headset options exist, but not which one currently costs the least.
5. Reduce battery hassle or add a controller only if useful
Consider a charging solution
For a controller that uses replaceable batteries, a compatible charging solution can reduce the need to keep buying disposables. Xbox’s accessories catalog includes controller charging products. Check that the chosen solution works with your controller revision and charging setup.

Consider a second controller
A second compatible controller can help with local multiplayer or serve as a replacement. Xbox says most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories work with Series X|S on its Series X product page. Confirm compatibility for the exact controller or accessory before buying; no current lowest-priced controller is established here.
