These five PS2-era games have concepts and stories worth rebuilding for modern hardware: Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Castlevania: Lament of Innocence and Resident Evil Outbreak. This is a wishlist, not a list of announced projects. A remake means a ground-up rebuild; it is different from a remaster that primarily updates and reissues an existing game.

What makes these PS2 games remake-worthy?

The appeal is not simply nostalgia. Each game has a premise, world or play style that could benefit from a rebuild tailored to current hardware and audiences. Some have already received remasters or collection releases, but those are not the same as new versions designed from the ground up. This is a personal editorial selection, not an objective ranking.

1. Final Fantasy X

Why it deserves a remake

Final Fantasy X pairs the story of Tidus with the world of Spira, giving a remake room to revisit a memorable journey while reimagining how its environments, characters and combat are presented. Its sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, also offers a natural possibility for a broader remake line: the two games could be rebuilt with a consistent modern presentation rather than treated as an isolated revival.

That is a creative possibility, not an announcement from Square Enix. The case for revisiting the game is that its story and sequel provide enough material to support more than a simple visual refresh. Sam Stone’s October 6, 2026 wishlist likewise points to the original’s place in the series and the potential to give both games room in a modern remake line.

2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Why it deserves a remake

Metal Gear Solid 2 centers on Raiden and a threat targeting the President, a story that could be reworked for contemporary presentation without losing its identity. A modern rebuild could also give the game’s dramatic shifts and stealth encounters the kind of updated staging that a full remake makes possible.

What exists now—and what does not

Konami’s official announcement identifies Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater as a faithful remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, not MGS2. The same announcement says Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 includes MGS2 in its HD Collection version; that is a collection release, not an MGS2 remake. Konami’s announcement is the clearest official distinction between the remake and the collection.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
  • Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
  • Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
  • Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
  • New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
  • Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive

3. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

Why it deserves a remake

The Precursor Legacy combines third-person action-platforming with a nonlinear world, side quests and minigames. A full remake could preserve that exploratory structure while rebuilding the environments and play experience for modern systems, rather than limiting itself to a technical update.

The PS3 Jak and Daxter Collection already included a remastered version, so there is an existing way to revisit the game in an updated release. The argument for a remake is different: a ground-up version could rethink how the original’s world and activities are presented while retaining the qualities that made the adventure distinctive. The original wishlist highlights its open-ended world and range of activities as reasons a technical update is not the only possible approach.

  • Hundreds of hours of nostalgic gameplay

4. Castlevania: Lament of Innocence

Why it deserves a remake

Lament of Innocence is a 3D PS2 entry that tells a story about the origins of the Dracula-Belmont feud. Its position early in the franchise chronology makes it a plausible starting point for a new remake line: a rebuilt version could introduce that origin story to players while giving its 3D action a fresh treatment.

Calling it the next game that should be remade is an opinion, not evidence of a Konami plan. The appeal is its combination of a franchise-defining conflict and an underappreciated entry that could be reconsidered on its own terms.

5. Resident Evil Outbreak

Why it deserves a remake

Resident Evil Outbreak brings cooperative survival to Raccoon City, offering a different angle on the series’ familiar setting. A remake could revisit that group-survival premise with updated third-person gameplay and more capable online infrastructure, making coordination central to the experience rather than simply modernizing the graphics.

The original used a PS2 online modem for online functionality, as the wishlist article notes. That historical detail does not establish whether the original service is available today, and it is not evidence of a Capcom remake announcement.

Remake or remaster: why the distinction matters

A remake rebuilds a game for modern hardware while retaining its story and design foundations; a remaster is a technical update or reissue. The difference matters for this list because Jak and Daxter has appeared in a remastered collection, and MGS2 is available in an HD Collection version. Neither fact means either game has received the full remake proposed here.

For a concrete comparison, Konami calls Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater a faithful remake, while PlayStation describes a remastered collection as offering upgraded graphics and an option to switch back to the original polygon look. PlayStation’s overview of modern remakes illustrates why an updated presentation and a ground-up rebuild should not be treated as interchangeable terms.

Why the PS2 remains fertile ground for remakes

The scale of the library helps explain the lasting appetite for revisiting this era. In an October 2020 article, PlayStation Blog Deutschland cited about 160 million PS2 units sold and a library of about 4,000 games. Those are figures reported in that dated article, not current measurements. PlayStation Blog Deutschland’s 2020 retrospective gives the historical context for how much ground there is to revisit.
