Which EFL team should you manage in Football Manager 26? These five clubs offer distinct, real-world save storylines: Wrexham’s rapid rise, Birmingham City’s record promotion season, Bradford City’s last-day breakthrough, Charlton Athletic’s play-off return and Burton Albion’s survival fight. They are narrative picks, not verified rankings of in-game difficulty.

Your squad, division, finances and board expectations depend on the FM26 database update you choose. Check those details in your save before committing to a club.

Five EFL saves at a glance

Club Real-world hook Save premise
Wrexham Promoted to the Championship in April 2025 after three successive promotions through the top five tiers, according to the EFL. Continue a rapid climb and establish the club at a higher level.
Birmingham City Returned to the Championship in April 2025. The EFL later reported the club ended its 2024/25 League One campaign with 111 points, five above the previous EFL record. Take charge after a record-setting season and turn promotion into a lasting return.
Bradford City Secured promotion from League Two on the final day of the 2024/25 season, per the EFL’s 2025 retrospective. Build on a dramatic promotion and consolidate in the division above.
Charlton Athletic Returned to the Championship through the League One play-offs in 2025, according to the EFL. Re-establish the club at a higher level after a play-off route back.
Burton Albion The EFL highlighted Burton’s 2024/25 survival under Gary Bowyer as a notable achievement. Make survival the first priority, then look for a platform to grow.

1. Wrexham: carry the momentum forward

Wrexham’s appeal is the clearest upward-momentum story of the five. The EFL reported the club’s Championship promotion on 26 April 2025 and noted that it had achieved three successive promotions through the top five tiers. That makes a save about sustaining a remarkable climb and adapting to tougher opposition.

The challenge you choose to set yourself is your own; the real-world promotion record does not establish FM26’s starting squad strength, finances or difficulty. Check your chosen database update for the club’s division and circumstances.

2. Birmingham City: follow a record promotion season

Birmingham City returned to the Championship in April 2025 after a standout League One campaign. In its year-in-review, the EFL said Birmingham finished the 2024/25 season on 111 points—five more than the previous EFL record. That is a useful premise for a save focused on turning a dominant promotion into sustained progress.

The 111-point figure belongs to Birmingham’s real 2024/25 season; it is not a rating or expectation for an FM26 career. For the promotion announcement, see the EFL report; the season total appears in the EFL retrospective.

3. Bradford City: build after a last-day promotion

Bradford City’s 2024/25 promotion story ended on the final day of the League Two season. That makes the club a natural pick if you want the first chapter of your save to be about turning a dramatic breakthrough into stability, rather than recreating a promotion chase from scratch. The EFL included Bradford’s achievement in its 2025 review of memorable moments.

4. Charlton Athletic: make the play-off return stick

Charlton returned to the Championship via the League One play-offs in 2025. The save premise is to re-establish the club at that higher level after taking the route through the play-offs. The EFL’s 2025 retrospective records the return; it does not establish what targets, players or resources a particular FM26 database assigns Charlton.

5. Burton Albion: turn survival into a foundation

Burton Albion offers a different kind of story: avoiding the drop and trying to build from there. The EFL described Burton’s survival under Gary Bowyer in 2024/25 as a notable achievement in its 2025 season retrospective. Choose Burton if you prefer a survival-first narrative over an immediate promotion push.

How to choose the right save in your FM26 database

These recommendations are based on real-world club narratives, not verified FM26 ratings or difficulty. Before starting, load the database update you intend to use and check the details that will shape your actual career:

  • Division and starting date: Confirm where the club begins in that database. Real-world 2024/25 outcomes do not guarantee the same setup in every save.
  • Squad depth: Look at cover across positions as well as the first-choice XI.
  • Finances and contracts: Review the available budget, wage commitments and players approaching the end of their deals.
  • Board objectives: Read the board’s stated expectations rather than inferring them from a club’s real-world story.
  • Facilities: Check whether the club’s facilities suit the development plan you have in mind.

For a promotion-and-momentum story, start with Wrexham or Birmingham. Bradford and Charlton fit saves about converting a recent promotion into progress at the next level; Burton suits a survival-first plan. The club that best fits you depends on the database’s actual setup and the kind of challenge you want.

Real-world rules are not automatically FM26 rules

There is also a real-world financial-control change on the horizon for League One clubs: in May 2026, the EFL said clubs approved a 2026/27 rule change lowering the wage-spend share of turnover from 60% to 50%, with manager costs included. The EFL said the full 2026/27 rules would be published later. This is context about real football, not evidence that FM26 implements the change; consult the EFL announcement for the update and check the rules applicable to the season you are managing.
