5 Games Set in the 1970s—and Two Nearby Misses

The strongest documented 1970s game settings include 1979 New York in The Warriors and 1974 Costa Rica in Peace Walker. Here’s how five decade-dated picks differ—and which famous crime games fall outside the decade.

If you mean games whose stories actually take place in the 1970s, the best-supported options are a short list, not seven equally strong picks. The Warriors is set in 1979 New York; Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker takes place in 1974; and Driver: Parallel Lines begins in 1978 before jumping to 2006. Two more Metal Gear games have dates in the decade, but the available setting evidence for them is less substantial. The distinction matters: a 1970s look is not the same as a 1970s setting.

Best-supported games set in the 1970s

1. The Warriors — New York City, 1979

The Warriors is the clearest choice for a game grounded in a specific 1970s place and year. Rockstar identifies its setting as New York in 1979, making it a direct fit for players seeking a period crime story rather than a modern game with retro styling. Its focus is urban street conflict, not military action or open-world historical simulation. Rockstar’s game page lists PlayStation, Xbox and other platform families, but that historical platform list does not confirm current availability or compatibility for a particular edition or region. Rockstar Games: The Warriors.

2. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker — Costa Rica and the Caribbean, 1974

Konami’s series timeline places Peace Walker in 1974, with its story set around Costa Rica and the Caribbean. It is a strong date match, but a very different kind of 1970s game from The Warriors: expect military stealth and action rather than street crime or a city-period drama. The setting is a named year in a real region, though that does not make the game a documentary depiction of the decade. Konami: Metal Gear series timeline.

3. Driver: Parallel Lines — 1978, then 2006

Driver: Parallel Lines starts in 1978, then advances to 2006. Its 1970s material is therefore only the first era of a story that spans decades; it should not be described as taking place wholly in the ’70s. Choose it if you want driving and crime-action gameplay with a substantial 1970s opening, and are comfortable with the later time jump. The developer’s account of the setting and two-era structure appears in a developer diary hosted by Atari.

Qualified 1970s options

4. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops — 1970

A 2016 feature identifies Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops as set in 1970, which makes it a potential literal match. Treat it as a qualified recommendation: the same coverage cautions that the period may not feel especially distinctive during play. The evidence available here establishes the stated year, but not how much of the game’s playtime or story is spent in that setting. Den of Geek: Metal Gear Solid timeline.

5. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes — 1975

The same 2016 feature places Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes in 1975. That is a decade match by date, but the available setting evidence here does not establish how much of the experience occupies the period or support a more detailed recommendation about its scope. Consider it a qualified option if you already want a Metal Gear stealth-action chapter; the date alone is not enough to rank it alongside games with better-documented period settings. How to choose among them

Game Documented year and scope What the setting evidence supports
The Warriors New York, 1979 A clear, specific late-decade urban setting; official Rockstar page.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker 1974; Costa Rica and the Caribbean A specific year and region; official Konami timeline.
Driver: Parallel Lines Begins in 1978, then moves to 2006 A two-era story, not a game set entirely in the decade; developer account.
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops 1970 A year identified by secondary coverage; period distinctiveness and share of gameplay are not established here.
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes 1975 A year identified by secondary coverage; the evidence here does not establish more about the decade’s role in the experience.

For a grounded urban period setting, start with The Warriors. For a military stealth story with an official 1974 date, choose Peace Walker. Pick Driver: Parallel Lines if the shift to 2006 is part of the appeal rather than a drawback. The two additional Metal Gear entries fit by stated year, but their decade credentials are less fully established in the cited coverage.

Games often mistaken for 1970s settings

  • Mafia III is set in New Bordeaux in 1968, according to the cited development account. Its period crime atmosphere may appeal to a similar audience, but it is a 1960s game, not a 1970s one. PCGamesN: Mafia III’s setting.
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is identified by Rockstar’s store material as an 1980s game. Its crime-game connection does not make it a ’70s setting. Rockstar Store: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
  • Disco Elysium may evoke 1970s cop-show style to some players, but the official PlayStation page cited here does not establish that it takes place in the historical 1970s. Treat the stylistic association separately from a confirmed setting. PlayStation: Disco Elysium – The Final Cut.

What “set in the ’70s” means

A useful recommendation should be based on an in-game date, not just music, clothes, cars or a crime-film influence. The strongest matches above have a named year from official or developer material. The two qualified Metal Gear picks rely on secondary coverage for their dates, and the evidence cited here does not support treating all five as equally rich period pieces. A catalog category such as MobyGames’ 1970s setting group can help discover candidates, but it is not a quality ranking or proof that a game’s decade is central to its story. MobyGames: game groups.
