That is a personal verdict, not a claim that every player or critic must rank it first.
1. It feels like a full-sized adventure, not a tech demo
Astro’s Playroom is a compact showcase for the PS5 and its controller. Sony describes Astro Bot as a standalone, full-sized follow-up, with over four times more worlds than Astro’s Playroom, 300 bots to rescue, and dozens of new powers and features. Sony does not give an exact world count on that page, so the useful point is the scale of the expansion—not a specific number of stages.

The rescue goal gives the adventure a clear thread: explore, find the scattered crew, and bring them back together. The result is a game with room to build on Astro’s Playroom’s ideas rather than simply repeat its introductory tour of the hardware.
2. New abilities keep the play changing
Astro’s new powers are more than a cosmetic update. In his launch announcement, Team ASOBI Studio Director Nicolas Doucet wrote that Astro can use “over 15 new abilities offering unique play styles.” That gives the adventure a broader toolkit and a basis for changing how you approach its challenges.

The number is Sony’s launch-announcement figure; it does not mean every ability appears in every level. What matters for my case is the promise of variety: the game has more ways to make Astro’s movement and interactions feel distinct than a single, repeated gimmick would allow.
3. The DualSense adds sensation and resistance
Astro Bot is designed to make the controller part of the experience. Sony lists DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger support, which can make actions more tactile through vibration and resistance in the triggers. Its PlayStation Store listing also confirms vibration and trigger-effect support.
Sony additionally promotes 4K visuals, 3D audio, and use of the PS5’s high-speed SSD on the official game page. These are platform-holder feature descriptions, not independent performance measurements. Sony notes that a 4K-capable display is needed to access 4K resolution.

4. PlayStation history becomes part of the adventure
The rescued crew gives the game a reason to celebrate its setting. Sony describes the bots as including characters inspired by iconic games from PlayStation’s past and present, in tribute to three decades of the platform. The pleasure is not only spotting a reference; collecting bots also serves the adventure’s central rescue objective.
Sony’s launch announcement frames those crew members as part of the 30th-anniversary celebration. That gives the nostalgia a clear purpose: it is woven into Astro’s mission, rather than being the only reason to play.

There is also some official recognition behind the enthusiasm. In its 2024 PlayStation Blog awards results, PlayStation named Astro Bot the Platinum award winner for use of DualSense.

That is a specific award from PlayStation’s own reader awards, not proof of a universal consensus or a substitute for an individual opinion. For me, it reinforces one of the game’s strongest qualities: the controller feels considered as part of the design, not tacked on as a feature checklist.
Is Astro Bot worth it on PS5?
If you want a standalone platform adventure that expands on Astro’s Playroom, makes deliberate use of DualSense, and folds PlayStation-inspired collectibles into its central goal, Astro Bot has a strong case. My game-of-the-year verdict is subjective; the concrete reasons behind it are the scale Sony describes, the new abilities, the controller features, and the rescue-and-discovery structure.
