Why is everyone obsessed with Animal Crossing? The series makes room for different kinds of play: you can set your own pace, shape a place that feels personal, enjoy small daily wins and spend time with friends or charming animal neighbors. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released for Nintendo Switch on 20 March 2020, also arrived when many people were isolated at home—but pandemic timing helps explain its breakout, not every player’s attachment to the series today. Nintendo’s UK listing for the game confirms its platform and release date.

1. You choose your own pace and goals

Animal Crossing does not funnel players toward one required ending or a single measure of success. A session might mean fishing, catching bugs, collecting fossils, decorating a room or visiting someone else’s island. You can pursue a long-term project or simply do a few small things and stop.

That freedom is a key part of what makes the game relaxing for some people. Participants in a study of New Horizons described the lack of obligatory tasks and the ability to choose what to do as calming. That is a report of their experience, not a clinical claim or a guarantee that every player will feel the same way. Tong and colleagues’ 2021 CHI PLAY study examined players’ stories and experiences.

2. Your island becomes a creative project

Players can shape their homes and islands to match their tastes, from arranging gardens to building spaces with a particular theme. The result is not just a set of upgrades: it is a place players can make distinctive, revisit and show to others.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - For Nintendo Switch (AUS VERSION)
  • Share Your Paradise - Show off your island utopia to family and friends - or pack your bags and visit theirs.
  • Get Building - Experience a robust new crafting system - collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools!
  • Create Your Perfect Getaway - Craft everything from tools to creature comforts as you create and customize your island community.
  • Explore Your Island - Collect bugs, decorate your paradise throughout the day, or enjoy sunset on the beach while fishing in the ocean.
  • Play Together - Up to eight players can reside on an island; four residents of the same island can play together simultaneously on a single system.

As The Guardian reported, players created themed gardens, markets and libraries. That range helps explain why the game can appeal both to people who enjoy planning a design and to those who would rather borrow inspiration, make a small corner their own or see what friends have built. The Guardian’s interviews with the game’s creators also describe how players with different tastes can enjoy it in their own ways.

3. The island feels like a place that keeps going

Real-time progression, changing seasons and weather, animal neighbors and familiar routines give the game an everyday rhythm. The island is not only a backdrop for a task list; it can feel like somewhere to return to and see what has changed.

Series producer Hisashi Nogami described the design concept for New Horizons as “the deserted island.” In the same interview, he discussed how features connect—for example, resources and plants have roles in the wider world. Those details give routine actions a sense of place, whether you are gathering materials, tending to an area or checking in with a neighbor.

  • Build your community from scratch on a deserted island brimming with possibility; Create your personal getaway and customize your character, home, decorations, and even the landscape itself
  • Collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools. Then, use what you create to give your island a personal touch
  • Watch as the time of day and seasons match real life—even your hemisphere. Each day holds potential for surprises and discoveries
  • Get to know the island residents, garden, fish, decorate, hunt for fossils, and more.
  • Show off your paradise – play on the same system with a total of 4 people, or play together online or over local wireless for fun with up to 8 players

4. Small tasks make progress satisfying

Collecting, crafting and decorating break progress into manageable steps. Catching a creature, finding a fossil, gathering materials for an item or improving a room can provide a clear, immediate goal without demanding competitive mastery. For players who like steady progress, those modest rewards can be satisfying in their own right.

Participants in Tong and colleagues’ study described accomplishment from everyday activities and gifts from animal residents. That helps explain why a quiet task can feel meaningful: it contributes to a collection, a project or a relationship within the game, even when it is not part of a race to finish.

5. It makes socializing feel personal

Players can visit one another’s islands, exchange items and recipes, host events and talk about their creations. Social play can be a planned get-together or a low-pressure way to share what you have made. The animal residents matter, too: conversations and gifts from them can make the island feel socially warm even during a solo session.

  • Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
  • Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.

In Tong and colleagues’ study, 42.9% of participants said friends or family who were already playing motivated them to start. When asked about their most memorable experience, 56.3% categorized it as social: 30.2% involving other players and 26.1% involving non-player characters. Those figures describe that study’s participants, not all Animal Crossing players. Director Aya Kyogoku called Animal Crossing “a communication game,” while Nogami said one goal of the series is “to connect people.”

Why did New Horizons become a phenomenon in 2020?

The game’s launch coincided with the early COVID-19 isolation period, giving its island escape and social features particular relevance. In a moment when people had fewer opportunities to meet in person, visiting friends in a game offered a way to spend time together. The timing amplified the fit between the game and what many people needed then; it does not establish a single explanation for every player’s interest or for the series’ appeal over time.

The launch-period numbers show how quickly New Horizons took off, but they should not be mistaken for current sales totals. The Guardian reported 11 million copies by the end of March 2020. BBC Science Focus reported five million digital copies in the first month after release and, citing GamesIndustry.biz, more than 13 million copies worldwide by early May 2020. These are historical figures from 2020, not current lifetime sales.

Why is Animal Crossing so popular with different kinds of players?

The five appeals work together, but they do not have to matter equally to everyone. Someone who enjoys a clear collection goal may spend more time fishing and gathering; a creative player may focus on design; another may value visits with friends or the island’s slower routine. The game makes these approaches compatible rather than requiring one preferred style of play. That variety is a more durable explanation of its appeal than any single launch moment.
