If you’re drawn to Lanterns for its Earth-based murder mystery, veteran-and-rookie partnership, or Green Lantern mythology, these five series offer different ways into similar territory. HBO describes Lanterns as a DC drama about Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigating a murder on Earth, blending superhero science fiction with a grounded mystery. The HBO Max press-room announcement says the series was slated to debut in August 2026 on HBO and HBO Max; its current availability may depend on your region. Below, each pick is matched to a particular part of that premise rather than treated as a direct substitute.
What makes a series a good match for Lanterns?
Lanterns is not presented only as a cosmic adventure. Prime Video’s series listing identifies Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and new recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, as the central pair in an Earth-based murder investigation. That premise points to four useful comparison points: a serious investigation, a partnership under pressure, superhero or science-fiction elements, and a wider world of mythology or institutions.
None of the shows below shares all four in the same way. Some prioritize the case, others the partnership or the scale of their fictional worlds.
5 sci-fi series to watch if you love Lanterns
1. True Detective — for the grounded investigation
If the appeal of Lanterns is seeing a murder case shape the story, start with True Detective. It is a grounded crime-drama comparison rather than a superhero or space-fiction counterpart: its focus is on investigators, evidence, and the effects a case has on the people pursuing it. TVLine has also pointed to True Detective when discussing the grounded detective approach associated with Lanterns. Read TVLine’s comparison feature.

2. Watchmen — for superheroes in a political mystery
Watchmen is a strong pick if you want speculative fiction, superheroes, and an investigation to coexist in a story concerned with power and institutions. Its overlap with Lanterns is tonal and structural—not a shared universe or a continuation. The appeal is the collision between extraordinary abilities and a mystery rooted in ordinary human and political consequences.

3. The Expanse — for an expansive science-fiction world
For the cosmic side of Lanterns, try The Expanse. It offers a much broader science-fiction setting, where political tensions and competing interests shape the story across a populated solar system. The connection is scale and the sense that local events can sit inside a larger web of power—not Green Lantern action or a detective-duo formula.

5. Legion — for a more surreal superhero story
If what you want is another superhero series willing to take unusual formal and psychological turns, Legion is the most experimental pick here. It shares the broad category of comic-book-inspired science fiction, but not Lanterns’ grounded murder-mystery setup. Expect a more subjective, surreal approach rather than a police-style investigation.

Want more Green Lantern mythology?
For the source material behind Lanterns, DC’s official explainer points readers toward Green Lantern comics. It does not establish one required reading order, so you can use its suggestions as a starting point rather than treating any particular run or edition as mandatory. Warner Bros. Discovery’s Lanterns pressroom records an eight-episode, straight-to-series order.
