Reports of Ninja Theory employees facing redundancy—and some saying they have already lost their jobs—surfaced in early October 2026. Xbox has begun consultation on a proposed studio closure, but as of October 7 it has not announced that Ninja Theory has formally closed. The future of the announced game Senua is also unconfirmed.
Have Ninja Theory layoffs started?
Employee-level reports have appeared, but they do not establish a final studio-wide layoff count. On October 5, Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reported that developers had announced on LinkedIn that their jobs were at risk or had ended, and said it verified those reports. VGC named nine employees who had confirmed one of those two statuses. That is not a complete count of affected staff.
The distinction matters: some employees have reported losing their jobs, while others are facing redundancy rather than having a final dismissal confirmed. PC Gamer’s October 5 report notes that UK consultation is legally required before actual layoffs and that employees in consultation are not certain to be dismissed. The reports therefore support saying that job losses have been reported and other roles are at risk—not that every affected job has already been eliminated.
Is Ninja Theory actually closing?
Xbox has announced consultation on a proposed closure, not a completed closure. In a September 22, 2026 staff update attributed to Matt Booty, Xbox said: “Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through. We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.” The Xbox Wire update leaves open the possibility of another path while the consultation proceeds.

As of October 7, the sources cited here do not confirm a formal closure or the outcome of consultation. They also do not identify the parties to the two agreements or explain why they fell through. It would be premature to describe the studio as definitively shut down.
What is the status of the new Hellblade game, Senua?
VGC described Senua as the third game in the Hellblade series, but reported on October 5 that its fate had not been officially confirmed. There is no basis in the cited statements to call the game canceled or to say it will continue. Its status remains uncertain alongside the studio’s proposed closure.

What the reported numbers do—and do not—mean
VGC named nine employees who said their jobs were at risk or had ended. Because those reports combine different employment statuses and do not claim to cover the whole studio, nine is not a confirmed total of Ninja Theory layoffs. Xbox separately said 268 roles were being eliminated across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and the Xbox Game Studios management and central functions layer; that figure is not a Ninja Theory-specific count.
