The size of the improvement varies by game; the console’s USB connection and the game itself limit what a faster drive can deliver. The options below are buying paths—not five drives ranked in a controlled Xbox One X test.
What to look for in an Xbox One X SSD
Xbox One X has a 1 TB internal hard drive and three USB 3.0 ports, according to the Xbox One family fact sheet. An external USB 3.0 drive can expand storage without replacing the internal drive. Prioritize capacity, price per usable terabyte, a cable that fits the console, portability, warranty, and current availability—not just the drive’s advertised peak speed.
Microsoft announced Xbox One external storage support in 2014 with USB 3.0 and a 256 GB minimum. That minimum comes from an older announcement, so use the console’s current setup prompt to confirm whether a particular drive is accepted rather than treating the historical threshold as a current policy. 1. Samsung T7 portable SSD
Windows Central’s 2025 Xbox accessories guide names the Samsung T7 as a suitable external SSD for Xbox-family use. It is a sensible portable-drive candidate to compare, but that editorial recommendation is not a controlled Xbox One X benchmark. 2. Seagate Game Drive for Xbox SSD
Seagate’s 2018 data sheet describes an Xbox-branded, bus-powered USB 3.0 SSD intended for Xbox One game storage. The sheet says it does not require a separate power cable. Because that information describes an older product revision, verify the model number, condition, warranty, and availability before buying; the cited material does not establish that it is currently in stock. 3. Another portable USB 3.0 SSD
If neither named model suits your budget or availability, compare current portable SSDs that can connect to the console over USB 3.0. Confirm that the package includes a compatible cable or that you have the correct one. USB-C on the drive is not itself a problem if the cable’s console end fits an Xbox One X USB port.
4. A SATA SSD you already own, in a USB 3.0 enclosure
Reusing a SATA SSD in a compatible USB 3.0 enclosure can be a cost-effective alternative if you already own the drive. Confirm the enclosure supports the SSD’s form factor and has a suitable USB connection. The available sources do not establish a particular enclosure as the best choice.

5. A capacity-first external SSD
For a large game library, choose among compatible USB 3.0 SSDs by comparing the cost per usable terabyte, physical size, cable fit, warranty, and verified availability. A higher advertised transfer rate alone is not a reason to pay more: the Xbox One X’s USB 3.0 storage path constrains the gains a faster drive interface can provide.
Will an external SSD make Xbox One X games load faster?
It can, but the change is game-dependent rather than a guaranteed multiplier. GamersNexus compared an external SSD with the internal hard drive on Xbox One X in games including Final Fantasy XV, Monster Hunter: World, PUBG, and Assassin’s Creed: Origins. Its 2018 results varied by game. The analysis notes that gains may be more apparent before reaching a menu or playable point than uniformly throughout gameplay. A drive’s advertised peak transfer rate is not the same as the speed a game will experience. The console connects external storage over USB 3.0, and game loading behavior also affects the result. An SSD is therefore most useful as an added storage option with potential loading benefits, not as a guarantee of a particular improvement.

- Connect the supported external drive to a USB port on the Xbox One X. For a new drive, follow the console’s on-screen setup or formatting prompt. Formatting can erase data already on the drive, so back up anything you need first.

- Select the internal drive, choose the games or apps to manage, then choose the external drive as the destination and copy or move the selected items.
Microsoft recommends using supported external storage to transfer games to an Xbox One X. The exact prompts can depend on the drive and console setup, so follow the on-screen instructions if they differ from this general path.
